Padi floor price hike to RM1,500 brings relief to farmers

PARIT BUNTAR: A recent hike in Malaysia's padi floor price to RM1,500 is being seen as a critical step in sustaining the country's rice industry, as farmers grapple with mounting input costs and declining profits.
Parit Abas farmer, Zulfahmi Akhyar, 35, said the RM200 increase has somewhat helped ease the rising costs of cultivating padi fields.
"Previously, we were affected by the increase in diesel prices, not to mention the costs of seeds, pesticides, and other necessities.
"Moreover, this season we did not receive the RM600 interim assistance while waiting for the padi to mature, as we had before.
"So this additional RM200 helps ease the burden we've been carrying in managing our fields.
"Many small-scale farmers like me can't bear the cost of living and farming at the same time. This move at least gives us some breathing room," he said.
He added that he hopes the government will continue to listen to farmers and consider additional aid in the future, especially during the monsoon season, which greatly affects harvests.
Last October, the government's decision to increase the padi purchase floor price to RM1,300 per tonne under the 2024 Budget, up from RM1,200, which had remained unchanged since 2014, brought relief to farmers struggling with the rising costs of rice farming.
Another farmer, Mohd Naim Othman, 34, said that in his seven years of farming, this was the best news he had received.
"Back in the early 2000s, the floor price was only RM1,200. The increase to RM1,300 gave farmers renewed motivation to continue working the fields.
"Today's announcement by the prime minister truly brings new hope to farmers, as we had nearly given up due to the rising costs of farming.
"Now, this eases our hardship a little and gives new spirit to us, the younger generation, to keep cultivating padi," he said.
He added that the younger generation needs support from the government to remain in this sector, and such an increase shows that their hard work is being valued.
"Support like this must continue, not just for profit, but for the sake of national food security," he said.
Earlier today Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the minimum purchase price of padi has been increased to RM1,500 for this year, and the paddy price subsidy scheme rate has also been raised to RM500.

More Malaysians to benefit from Rahmah Sales with RM300m boost

RAUB: The MADANI Rahmah Sales programme will reach more Malaysians, including rural communities, following an additional RM300 million allocation. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that the expanded funding ensures wider implementation across urban, suburban, and rural areas. 'The programme focuses on high-density urban and suburban areas, without neglecting rural areas identified according to each State Legislative Assembly,' he said after officiating the Raub UMNO divisional meeting. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously announced the allocation doubling to RM600 million this year. The initiative, launched in January 2023, offers daily necessities at 10 to 30 per cent discounts to alleviate living costs. More Will Benefit From Rahmah Sales, Including Rural Folk

RAUB, July 27 (Bernama) -- The additional allocation of RM300 million for the MADANI Rahmah Sales programme will enable more people to purchase goods at lower prices, including those living in rural areas. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the additional allocation will ensure the programme can be implemented on a wider scale, including areas identified according to each State Legislative Assembly (DUN). "This programme focuses on high-density urban and suburban areas, without neglecting rural areas identified according to DUN. "The targeted group must seize the opportunity to purchase, because the items are sold at discounted prices,' he told reporters after officiating the Raub UMNO divisional meeting here today. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the allocation for the programme would be doubled to RM600 million this year, compared to the RM300 million set aside. Anwar was reported to have said that the increased funding would enable more frequent sales and an expanded number of locations across all 600 state constituencies. The Rahmah Sales, launched on Jan 11, 2023, is a year-long cheap sale programme aimed at invigorating the local retail sector economy, apart from helping to reduce the people's cost of living burden. Through the programme, the public is given discounts on daily necessities ranging from 10 to 30 per cent cheaper than the regular local market price. -- BERNAMA

Muar hosts national month launch, honouring Johor's patriotic contributions

MUAR: Johor's Bandar Maharani being chosen as the venue for this year's National Month and Jalur Gemilang launch is a strong recognition of the state's historical, patriotic, and economic contributions to the nation. Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi described the launch in Muar as "no coincidence," noting that the district was the cradle of the country's independence movement. "This is not merely a launch venue. It is a symbol of honour, a tribute to Johor's deep-rooted spirit of patriotism and nationhood," Onn Hafiz said in his speech today. Held at Dataran Tanjung Emas, the event was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also present was Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Onn Hafiz expressed gratitude to the prime minister and federal administration for choosing Johor, saying the decision reflected mutual trust and a renewed synergy between federal and state governments. In his speech, he welcomed key federal announcements, including the RM100 SARA aid for 22 million adults, the new RM1,700 minimum wage, reduced RON95 petrol prices, and the expansion of Rahmah Madani sales, calling them concrete steps towards easing the people's burden and realising true independence. "Real freedom isn't just about being rid of colonisers. It means escaping poverty, coping with living costs, and living with dignity in our own land," he said, adding that the theme Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni (Protecting the People's Welfare) resonates strongly with Johoreans. Citing recent data, Onn Hafiz revealed that Johor secured RM30.1 billion in approved investments in Q1 2025 alone, a significant jump from the previous year. "The state's gross domestic product grew by 6.4 per cent last year, surpassing the national average. "These are not just numbers. They reflect Johor's status as not only the economic driver of the south, but one of the key engines of national growth," he said. He expressed confidence that continued collaboration with the federal government would further strengthen Johor's path towards becoming a progressive and compassionate state. Calling for a renewed spirit of national unity, Onn Hafiz urged Malaysians not to let the Jalur Gemilang remain a mere ornament. "Let it live in our hearts as a symbol of struggle, freedom, and dignity. And fly the Johor flag with pride, because this is where our strength began," he said. He reminded the people that the current generation bears the responsibility to preserve and uplift the legacy left by those who fought for independence. "Let Johor not only be a state that develops, but one that unites. Let it not just be advanced, but honourable."
