Personal trainer dies after being hit by lightning riding bike on solo trip
The owner of a popular cocktail bar has tragically died after being struck by lightning while riding his motorbike.
Marco Zampilli was heading to the beach when a violent thunderstorm suddenly broke out and he was thrown from his BMW motorbike when he was struck by a lightning bolt causing an electric shock. He was found unresponsive on state road 275, between Nociglia and Surano, in Italy's Lecce province. People rushed to his aid and tried to resuscitate him while waiting for police and paramedics, but when responders arrived, there was nothing they could do.
The tragedy happened on Sunday morning (August 17). Marco, 42, lived in Rome but had travelled to Italy's "heel" a few days earlier for a short holiday on his own.
The accident happened near a memorial stone to another victim who had died in the same way years earlier. Marco co-owned a cocktail bar in Rome and was also a certified personal trainer.
His Ru.de bar had hundreds of positive reviews on Facebook and was recommended by 74% of visitors. "Top. Cocktails of the best quality. Thank you Marco for your professionalism and friendliness," wrote one person.
Another said: "Very nice place, friendly staff, helpful and cordial! I booked the same day (Saturday) for 14 and they had no problem settling us in, despite the place being full. Such a great experience! Very delicious cocktails ! Recommended!"
Affectionately known by his friends as Marcolino, he was passionate about motorbikes and Roma football club. He had lost his father - a pastry chef - around five months before his death, as reported by NeedToKnow.
An online fundraiser has been launched to help Marco's family transport his body from Lecce to Rome, cover funeral costs, and close down his business.
Denise wrote: "We met what feels like a lifetime ago - you with your cheeky grin and your big heart. You were always there for everyone. Your laugh was impossible to miss, and when you had something to say, nothing could stop you. That's how I'll remember you, my friend - strong as ever, with those eyes that could look straight into your soul. Goodbye, Boss."
The GoFundMe page has raised more than £31,000 so far. It states: Hi everyone, this fundraiser has been organized to help Marco's family raise the necessary money to transport Marco's body home (from Lecce to Rome), for the funeral and for the business being closed (Rude Centocelle). Anyone who wants to contribute to support the cause can do so through this collection. Even a little help can go a long way, thanks in advance."

Clydebank pub Glenhead Tavern teases £290k transformation
The Glenhead Tavern, soon to be renamed The Duntocher, shut its doors in January 2025. However, the boozer is being undertaken by Heineken-owned Star Pubs and new licensee, Clydebank resident Brian Carnochan, who also runs The Grant Arms in Glasgow. The new furniture has arrived. "We will begin the process of stocking everything and getting the place ready to open. "We will keep you updated as we go through this week." The revamp is expected to create 11 new jobs in the area. As part of the works, the outside of the pub will be painted a classic cream colour alongside a bright dark green. Previously, new licensee Brian Carnochan, said: 'I love seeing people having a good time. "I remember The Glenhead Tavern when it was a thriving local. Sadly, it's lost its way in recent years. "It's been much missed, and there's been a lot of concern for its future. "My aim is to restore it to its glory days when it was the place to go. The designs are spot-on, and it will look fantastic when the works are completed.' Aldi's autumn season is here From the Hotel Collection of candles at Aldi, the "Fallen Leaves" is on sale for either £19.99 as a Hurricane candle or a £3.99 Autumn Candle for those on a budget. This "incredible" candle is said to have scents of autumn apples, amber and musk. Included in this is also the "Pumkin Spice" scent, with warm cinnamon, caramel and clove. The store wrote on their Facebook page: "It's with huge sadness, but our store will be closing down. "Starting tomorrow, we will go into our closing-down sale. All stock must go. "We also want to thank all our customers for shopping with us." The news came as a shock for some, with one writing: "Noooo I love that shop." A second added: "There'll soon be nothing left in March, sorry for the lovely staff." A third pointed out the importance of supporting the high street and said: "Use it or lose it. How many people in the comments haven't been for years, then act surprised with news like this? "If a big company like this relies on local support, think how much it means to have the local support as a small business." "While it's sad to be losing the Original Factory Shop, it's a reminder that in order to keep our high street upright, we must support it." He was met with agreement, with one writing: "It's not just Horley, sadly, it's everywhere! "How many of you lot moaning shop on Amazon/online? That's the reason!" What is happening at TOFS? The Original Factory Shop was bought by Modella Capital, a private equity firm, in February. Modella is known for taking on struggling retailers and has also recently bought Hobbycraft and WHSmith's high street shops. The firm quickly launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 The Original Factory Shop stores. At the end of April, Modella drew up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) for the retailer. Companies often use CVAs to avoid insolvency, which could otherwise force stores to close or trigger the collapse of the entire business. They allow firms to explore different options, such as negotiating reduced rents with landlords. But The Original Factory Shop previously told The Press and Journal that a 'number of loss-making stores would have to close' in the restructuring.
