Limpet mine may have damaged Greek tanker off Libya, say sources

TimesLIVE02-07-2025
A limpet mine may have caused a blast that damaged a Greek tanker sailing off Libya's coast last week, the fifth such incident to hit commercial shipping in the region in recent months, maritime security sources said on Tuesday.
The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Vilamoura had left the Libyan port of Zuetina on June 27 to head to Gibraltar with some 1-million barrels of oil when there was an explosion in the engine room, its Greece-based operator TMS said on Monday.
According to initial assessments, a limpet mine was a likely cause of the blast, four maritime security sources said.
A company representative with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that TMS was in no position to know what caused the blast until a full assessment of the damage was conducted once the vessel arrived in Greece later on Tuesday or on July 2.
The tanker's last position was off Greece's southern coast, ship tracking data on the MarineTraffic platform showed on Tuesday.
The ship's engine room was flooded due to the blast and the vessel lost maneuverability, although it was able to be towed towards Greece, TMS added in a statement on Monday.

Member of Irish rap group Kneecap appears at UK court on terrorism charge

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who was initially charged under the Anglicised name Liam O'Hanna and whose stage name is Mo Chara, is alleged to have waved the yellow flag of Hezbollah during a Kneecap gig in London on November 21, 2024. Ó hAnnaidh is accused of holding up a Hezbollah flag on stage while saying 'Up Hamas, up Hezbollah'. Kneecap have previously said the flag was thrown on stage during their performance. The 27-year-old was charged in May under the Terrorism Act, under which it is a criminal offence to display an article in a way which arouses reasonable suspicion that someone is a supporter of a proscribed organisation. Ó hAnnaidh appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday wearing the keffiyeh scarf associated with the Palestinian cause and sat alongside an Irish language interpreter. His bandmates Naoise Ó Cairealláin, stage name Móglaí Bap, and J.J. Ó Dochartaigh, who goes by DJ Próvaí, were also in court, with supporters filling the court's public gallery. His lawyers say the charge was brought too late and the prosecution should be thrown out, as Ó hAnnaidh was charged on May 22 this year – one day after the six-month limit for such charges. Prosecutor Michael Bisgrove, however, argued that Ó hAnnaidh was charged on May 21, exactly within the time limit. Judge Paul Goldspring is expected to issue a ruling later on Wednesday. Belfast-based Kneecap, who rap in Irish and English and regularly display pro-Palestinian messages during their gigs, previously said the flag had been tossed onto the stage and described the charge as an attempt to silence them. The group – who rap about Irish identity and support the republican cause of uniting Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland – have been increasingly vocal about the war in Gaza since Ó hAnnaidh was charged. Kneecap led a 30,000-strong crowd at the Glastonbury Festival in June in chants against Prime Minister Keir Starmer and accused Israel of committing war crimes in its conflict with Hamas in Gaza, an accusation Israel denies.

Kaya FM suspends Sold Phenduka pending an internal investigation

Before joining Kaya, Sol Phenduka had branched out into podcasting after being suspended by 5FM in 2015 for offensive comments. Kaya FM has suspended broadcaster Sol Phenduka with immediate effect. 'Kaya 959 confirms that presenter Sol Phenduka has been placed on suspension with immediate effect. This step has been taken pending the outcome of an internal process currently underway,' read a statement shared with The Citizen by Ian Bredenkamp, who handles PR for the station. When asked about the reason behind the suspension and its duration, Bredenkamp said they would release a follow-up statement 'once the internal process is concluded'. 'The station is committed to following due process, and no further details will be shared at this stage.' Sol Phenduka, whose real name is Solomzi Thandubuntu Phenduka, co-hosts the station's breakfast show Siz the World with Sizwe Dhlomo alongside sportscaster Mpho Maboi and newsreader Mfundo Mabalane. Before joining Kaya, the former Big Brother contestant had branched out into podcasting after being suspended by 5FM in 2015. His suspension on the national radio station came after he made offensive comments. The offensive comments he made were about the murders of the Van Breda family in Stellenbosch. The surviving member of the Van Breda family was then 16-year-old Marli van Breda. 'Sol referred to her survival as 'fresh' because she was the only person who can identify her killer,' read 5FM's statement at the time. 'His comments, which included him saying she was 'gorgeous' and that he would 'like to axe her out', but that he 'wouldn't X her', have been seen as insensitive, with social media accusing him of making jokes far too soon after such a tragic event.' The Van Breda family were victims of an axe attack. NOW READ: 'I just got fired from Kaya FM' – Dineo Ranaka
