Pick of the stats: Sunderland v Watford

Yahoo06-02-2025
Sunderland welcome Watford on Saturday (12:30 GMT) looking to keep their automatic promotion bid alive.
The Black Cats are unbeaten in six matches (W4 D2) following a dramatic 3-2 win at local rivals Middlesbrough on Monday night and are three points behind both Burnley in second and Sheffield United in third.
A run of just one win in eight (D1 L6) has seen the Hornets slip to 12th but they are still only three points off the play-off spots.
Sunderland have won six of their past eight home league games against Watford (D1 L1), including victory in this exact fixture last season via a 2-0 scoreline.
Watford have won each of their past two league games against Sunderland and will be looking to win three in succession for the first time since January 1993.
Sunderland are unbeaten in all 14 of their Championship home games this season (W9 D5) – they last had a longer unbeaten home run from the start of a second tier (or higher) campaign in 1979-80, when they were unbeaten in all 21 at Roker Park.
Watford have lost six of their past eight league games (W1 D1), including each of the past three in a row. They've not lost four consecutively in the second tier since November 2014.
Wilson Isidor has scored in four of his past six league games for Sunderland, including the past two in a row. He last scored in three consecutive league games in July 2023, in the Russian Premier League with Lokomotiv Moscow.

Fairfield, Conn. advances in Little League World Series, 1 away from U.S. title game

Fairfield, Connecticut's Little League World Series dream is alive and well, and the team is handling the spotlight like seasoned pros. Fairfield National defeated Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 13-1 on Monday to get within one game of playing for the U.S. championship in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Fairfield's next game is against Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Metro Region champions beat Hawaii on Friday before the primetime matchup with South Dakota. Coach Brian Palazzolo said before Monday's game that the message to his players is always the same. "Every pitch, every play, every inning. We take nothing for granted. We're gonna pump strikes and have the defense be ready to make a play behind out pitcher tonight," the coach told CBS News New York. The Metro Region also includes New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, and fans from all over have been in Williamsport to cheer on Fairfield. "We are a baseball family. Nothing can get in the way. Nothing can break us," Palazzolo said. "Errors will happen, it's Little League. If we can limit those to just a little bit, we're better than most teams." First baseman and pitcher Tommy D'Amura said he enjoys being a two-way player. "I prefer hitting, but defense is always fun when you're making the plays and just having a good time in the field," he said. The team will return to Connecticut as heroes no matter what, but they'd love to add a championship banner to the collection at Tunxis Hill Park. Only a handful of teams from the northeast have won the Little League World Series, including Binghamton, New York, in 2016 and Toms River, New Jersey, in 1998. Could a second-tier team steal the SEC title?

Josh Pate explains why - with no clear favorite atop the conference - a team like South Carolina, Texas A&M, Auburn, Oklahoma, Florida or Tennessee could make a surprise run to win the championship. View more Video Transcript In the whole top to bottom, or top to bottom of the second tier of the SEC, forget about Georgia for a second. Forget about Texas, forget about Bama, forget about LSU. As far as I can tell, looking left to right, everyone pretty much has them at or near the top of the odds board. FanDuel does as well. So tier one is fairly set. Now, I may have some minor disagreements with the order. But that's okay. That's why we'll do the JP poll. That's why we'll do season predictions, but past tier one, normally we're not talking about championship contenders, but this does not profile as a normal year, and I think most of us are agreeing on that at least. So can South Carolina win the SEC? Can Texas A&M win the SEC? Can Auburn do it? Can you do it? Can Florida do it? Can Tennessee do it? How many tier 2 teams in the SEC could reasonably jump up and grab the belt? For a long time, we lived in a world where it was just Alabama, or then it was just Alabama and Georgia, and then there would be Bama or Georgia, or maybe an LSU 2019 pops up, but by and large, it was like one or two teams and you were trying to find a way for something to go wrong for those favorites in order for anyone to have a shot. Well, look, there's a world where Leno. Sellers just turns into Superman or DJ Lagway does that or John Matteer does that. What if A&M is just running the ball for 900 yards per game and they're winning all the one possession games? What if Josh Heupel just pulls off a total magic show with Joey Aguilar, we think in Knoxville. My point is there is no elite team at the outset here, at least as far as I can tell. So that makes tier two on a rung of the ladder where they can reach the belt. Now they got to extend fully, they may have to jump, they may have to get up on their tippy toes, but I think they can reach it, at least someone there can. Close
