ChatGPT's Sam Altman says we're in an AI bubble — here's what that means and why it matters

The hype around AI is hitting a fever pitch, but even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, one of the leading architects of the AI boom, says things may have gone too far. In a recent dinner with journalists, Altman compared today's AI enthusiasm to the dot-com bubble of the late '90s, warning that while the core technology is real, the investor frenzy may be setting the stage for disappointment. The Verge reported Altman as saying, 'Yes, investors are overexcited about AI,' adding, 'Smart people get overexcited about a kernel of truth.' An AI bubble refers to a surge in investor enthusiasm and startup funding that inflates valuations beyond reasonable expectations, often detached from actual revenue or real-world impact. It's not unlike the housing bubble of 2008 or the crypto frenzy of 2021; lots of money, lots of momentum and a growing risk of collapse if reality doesn't match the hype. In the context of AI, that means: AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Midjourney have already reshaped everything from coding and writing to education and marketing. But Altman's warning suggests that not every AI startup will be a winner, and many may be riding a short-term wave of buzz rather than building lasting value. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. And yet, despite the caution, OpenAI is still spending big. Bloomberg reported that Altman confirmed the company plans to spend trillions of dollars on infrastructure, including next-generation data centers and AI chips. Altman underscored that demand already exceeds supply in a conversation with head of TED, Chris Anderson. Altman's comments come as a reality check more than a warning shot. While AI will likely define the next decade of tech, not every player will make it. The bubble may pop, but the foundational companies building the infrastructure and intelligence behind AI will you are a consumer, developer or investor betting on AI, the important thing is to look beyond the hype. DirecTV just added this killer YouTube TV feature

DirecTV is one of the best live TV streaming services I've tested — and I've tested all the cable alternatives. Yes, it can get expensive, but if you can stomach the high price on the Signature Packages, you get tons of channels for your money. That's a good thing, especially since now, DirecTV is letting you watch four channels at the same time. Yes, DirecTV is officially adding multiview to its live TV service. The feature is possibly the most popular feature on YouTube TV, and no small reason why we dub it the best live TV streaming service out there. DirecTV has offered versions of the feature in the past, though, and now it's offering customers seven new multiview "mixes" that allow you to watch four channels at once. Here's the full list: As you can see, it's not just Signature Package customers who are getting this new feature. If you're subscribed to an eligible Genre Pack, you can also watch multiview Mix Channels, provided your Genre Pack has the required channels. DirecTV launched Genre Packs back in February, and they allow you to subscribe to slimmed-down, genre-focused live TV streaming plans for less than a Signature Package. Genre Pack subscribers get access to the DirecTV app, unlimited DVR recording and MyFree DirecTV, the company's free streaming service. DirecTV adding multiview for most of its customers is a win if you're a subscriber. Full stop. But it's already starting off behind YouTube TV's multiview offering in terms of what you can do with the feature. Like DirecTV's new multiview mix channels, YouTube TV offers some multiview channels that are curated for subscribers. But starting earlier this past May, YouTube TV has allowed users to build custom multiviews, allowing them to create four channel combinations that include Bravo, ESPN, USA and more. I'm surprised DirecTV didn't offer this functionality to its customers as well. I get that building multiviews is a fairly new feature even for YouTube TV, but given DirecTV was already playing catch-up, why not put out an industry-leading product, rather than something that's already an inferior offering? It's still great that customers are getting this feature, but it clearly should be more. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 is almost here. As one of the biggest gaming events of the year, Gamescom promises new announcements and extended looks at some of the most anticipated upcoming video games on PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 comes directly from Cologne, Germany, and will be a two-hour showcase that gamers won't want to miss. The showcase is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. PT / 7 p.m. BST, and we're here to guide you through the event from start to finish, ensuring you don't miss a single world-first reveal. We already know the show is going to be a special one with titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Resident Evil 9, Ghost of Yotei and Ninja Gaiden 4 confirmed. Plus, we're set to get a first look at Prime Video's 'Fallout' season 2. And that's before we consider all the unconfirmed games that could appear, like 007: First Light and Hollow Knight: Silksong. It's shaping up to be the biggest gaming live stream of the summer, and Tom's Guide is here with all the coverage you need before, during and after Gamescom Opening Night Live. Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 takes place today (August 19) at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. PT / 7 p.m. BST. Don't worry if you're not fortunate enough to be on site in Cologne, because you can tune in online from anywhere in the world via the Gamescom YouTube and Twitch channels. These streams haven't gone live quite yet, but with the show just hours away, they will very soon. I'm a Senior Entertainment Editor at Tom's Guide, with more than five years of experience covering the gaming industry. As for what I want to see at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, anything from either FromSoftware or Naughty Dog would make me a very happy gamer.
