Survey company selected for Forest Rights Act implementation

The state cabinet on Wednesday approved the appointment of Polestar Surveys to carry out survey demarcation, preparation of plans, and fixing of boundary stones concerning claims received under the Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006.

The FRA is a landmark legislation aimed at recognising and vesting forest rights in forest-dwelling communities, particularly Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers. In Goa, the implementation of the FRA has been progressing slowly, with around 10,500 claims received, but only a small fraction was processed and settled. As of June 2025, around 806 land titles (sanads) were distributed, highlighting the need for expedited action to address the backlog.
A critical component of FRA's implementation is the accurate demarcation of land boundaries to ensure rightful claims. This process involves survey demarcation, preparation of plans, and the fixing of boundary stones. Previously, Theovel Surveys, Bengaluru, was contracted to undertake this work. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, including the demise of a key partner and financial constraints, the firm expressed its inability to continue.
The disposal of forest rights claims is being monitored by the Supreme Court.

"It is important, authorities should focus and ensure the river and channels are desilted besides availability of fertilisers," he added. The sharing of Cauvery waters has been a fraught issue between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka - especially in years there is a deficit monsoon. The situation persists despite a clear water sharing formula from the Supreme Court. With the southwest monsoon setting in early and the weatherman's forecast about an above average rainfall, farmers hope Karnataka would comply with the month-wise water sharing and that they would have a bountiful harvest.

Supreme court refuses to stay DSC exam, asks petitioner to approach Andhra Pradesh high court
Vijayawada: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain a petition challenging the DSC exam in the state and asked the petitioner to approach the high court. The apex court observed that as the exam process has already started, a stay could not be given at this stage. Posina Anand Sai, an ex-serviceman, moved the Supreme Court contending that the process adopted by the state govt was flawed as the exam was being conducted over a month-long period using distinct question papers. He argued that similarly situated students might be subjected to different levels of difficulty because of this approach, and a concealed normalisation of scores might affect his chances of getting selected. Charu Mathur, the counsel for the petitioner, made a special mention before the bench for an urgent hearing, seeking directions to stay the process. However, the SC bench, comprising of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan, asked why the petitioner did not approach the high court. A stay of proceedings at this stage would affect the rights of those who appeared and those who will take the exam in the coming days. Considering the arguments, the bench observed that they were not inclined to interfere in the matter as the exam process was midway. The bench further noted that the court does not devise a mechanism for holding examinations. West Bengal School Service Commission holds talks with ‘sacked' teachers
The chairperson of the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) on Thursday (June 12, 2025) met a delegation of 12 representatives of the 'untainted and sacked' teachers over their demands for job reinstatement. The delegation belonged to the Jogyo Shikkhok Shikkhika Adhikar Mancha (JSSAM). No conclusion was reached at the meeting by the time of this report being published. Hundreds of 'untainted' teachers, who lost their jobs after an April 3 Supreme Court order invalidating nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs, gathered at Karunamoyee in Bidhannagar on Thursday and marched to the WBSSC office. They raised slogans demanding their jobs be reinstated, as about hundred-odd police personnel stood guard around and inside the office premises. The 'untainted' teachers underlined four crucial demands. These include publishing their original OMR sheets and a list of 'untainted' candidates from the cancelled 2016 recruitment panel certified by the WBSSC. Additionally, they have demanded that the new recruitment process be kept on hold till the review petition is heard by the apex court, and for their jobs to be kept intact through a 'repanelling' process where the original OMR sheets from 2016 are re-evaluated for a new merit list without tainted candidates. The situation arose after the Supreme Court cancelled the entirety of the recruitment panel of 2016, citing a 'vitiated and tainted' hiring by the WBSSC. The apex court consequently directed the West Bengal government to complete a fresh recruitment process for assistant teachers' positions by December 31, till when the 'sacked' teachers have been allowed to work with full salaries. 'While it is true that the State and the WBSSC filed review petitions at the Supreme Court, the deadline for the online application for fresh recruitments is before the apex court reopens after summer recess. This has been done by design to put pressure on us. We will not appear for a reselection, and especially not before the review petition yields a result,' a protesting 'untainted and sacked' teacher, Suvojit Das, told The Hindu.
