Amazon Restructures Wondery Studio, Lays Off 110 Employees
Amazon is making major changes to its Wondery podcast studio just four years after acquiring it in a $300 million deal. As first reported by Bloomberg, the tech giant is cutting around 110 jobs and bidding farewell to Wondery CEO Jen Sargent. In a statement to a famous publication, Amazon spokesperson Alice Zhou confirmed that Wondery will continue creating podcasts, but its narrative content division—known for hits like Dr. Death, American Scandal, and Business Wars—will be merged into Amazon's Audible team. Meanwhile, Wondery's celebrity-hosted shows such as New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce, Mind the Game with LeBron James, and Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert will shift to a newly formed 'creator services' division. This team will reportedly focus on securing major sponsorship deals. While some programs will retain the Wondery brand, the Wondery Plus app will remain active despite the restructuring. 'The podcast landscape has evolved significantly in the past few years, particularly with the rise of video-forward, creator-led content,' Zhou said. 'These changes reflect that evolution and will streamline how Wondery integrates further into Amazon.' She added that 'many' of the affected Wondery employees have transitioned into other Amazon roles. This overhaul reflects broader industry trends. Podcasting has increasingly shifted toward video content, with YouTube emerging as the most popular platform. Wondery had already laid off a small number of employees earlier this year, and major shows like SmartLess and Morbid have since moved to SiriusXM.

Broadcom launches Jericho chip to advance AI data center networks
Broadcom's silicon division launched its next-generation Jericho networking chip on Monday, which is designed to connect data centers over 60 miles (96.5 km) apart and speed artificial intelligence computation. The company's Jericho4 introduces and improves several features that increase the amount of networking traffic speeding across large networks that operate inside and between data centers. Building and deploying artificial intelligence has become more computationally intensive and requires stringing together thousands of graphics processors (GPUs). Cloud computing companies such as Microsoft and Amazon require faster, more sophisticated networking chips to ensure data moves efficiently. Security when transferring data beyond the physical walls of a data center is crucial for cloud companies because of the potential attacks that could intercept it ahead of reaching its destination. Broadcom's engineers designed the Jericho chips to be deployed at a massive scale, and a single system can encompass roughly 4,500 chips, according to Ram Velaga, senior vice president and general manager of Broadcom's Core Switching Group. To help mitigate issues around network congestion, the Jericho4 chips use the same high-bandwidth memory (HBM) designers such as Nvidia and AMD use for their AI processors. It's necessary because of the volume of data that needs to be stuffed into memory at any given moment of operation. 'The switch is actually holding that traffic (in memory) till the congestion frees up,' Velaga said. 'It means you need to have a lot of memory on the chip.' The longer the distance the data must travel from the chip to its destination, the more memory designers must include in the chip as well. In addition to performance improvements, the Jericho4 also beefs up security by encrypting data. Broadcom opted to use TSMC's three nanometer process for the Jericho4.

Amazon overhauls Wondery podcast studio, cuts 110 jobs
is restructuring the Wondery podcast studio by shifting its award-winning narrative podcasts such as 'Business Wars' to Audible and consolidating creator-led shows into a new unit, according to a memo seen by Reuters. About 110 employees will be laid off as part of the process, while many Wondery employees will transition to other parts of Amazon, the company said in an emailed statement on Monday. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will depart the company following a transition period, the memo said. Intense competition in the expensive podcast industry as well as a growing focus on creator-led video content have prompted audio streaming companies including Spotify to diversify their podcasts as they look to lower costs and attract more users to their platforms. 'As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series,' Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in the memo. Wondery was acquired by Amazon in 2021 and has seen podcast revenue quadruple since then as the studio expanded its slate to include video podcasts and creator-driven series, according to the memo. Under the new structure, Wondery's narrative podcast studio – home to shows such as 'Dr. Death' and 'American Scandal' – along with the Wondery+ subscription service, will move to Audible, the e-commerce giant's audio platform. Its creator-focused podcast team that produces shows including 'Mind the Game', 'New Heights', and 'Armchair Expert' will join a new Creator Services group within Amazon's Talent Services division. This new team will continue to operate the creator-focused podcast studio under the Wondery brand. 'By making these changes, we can better support creators in monetizing their content across multiple channels,' Amazon said. Bloomberg News first reported on the Wondery overhaul.
