Whirl-wind performance from O'Brien filly in Musidora

Whirl-wind performance from O'Brien filly in Musidora

A market drifter before the off, the daughter of Wootton Bassett was sent off at 7-2 in the hands of Coolmore number one Ryan Moore, who was positive out of the stalls and never too far away from the pace.
It was Ralph Beckett's Sandown winner Tattycoram that led the field of Classic aspirants into the straight, but Whirl was hot on her tail, with Moore soon allowing his mount to stride on up the long run for home on the Knavesmire.
The further she went, the better Whirl got as she sauntered to a five-and-a-half-length success over Andrew Balding's Serenity Prayer, who made late ground from the back of the field.
The perfect ride from Ryan Moore 👏

Paddy Power trimmed the winner's odds for the Betfred Oaks to 10-1 from 33-1, but part-owner Michael Tabor suggested she is far from certain to head for Epsom.
He said: 'Ryan said before the race his plan was to bump her out and get a good position and if they caught her, then so be it.
'I don't think anyone expected that (performance) particularly, but Aidan seems to be able to do that, as we know.
'I don't really think that Whirl is an Oaks filly. I think she'd probably get a mile and a half, but over a mile and a quarter, something like the Prix de Diane, I think, would be more suitable, but I haven't discussed it with Derrick (Smith) or John (Magnier) or Aidan, so that's just my thinking.'
On what trip would be most suitable for Whirl, Moore added: 'She's by Wootton Bassett, so you can kind of do most things.
'She was very comfortable stepping up to that trip today and I thought she was impressive.
'She's very straightforward, was always travelling nicely, she didn't do a whole lot in front but she kept responding and I thought it was a nice performance.'
Andrew Balding's wife and assistant Anna-Lisa said of the runner-up: 'What a star she is, she's a lovely big filly. She struggled to go with them early as they went very quick but this is only her second run. To beat the fillies she has beaten is exciting. She's come a long way in a short time.

'I'd imagine it will be the Ribblesdale (at Royal Ascot) next, but I just put the saddle on! We'll all have a good chat tomorrow but there's lots to look forward to.'
Dual Lingfield winner Go Go Boots was third on her turf debut for John and Thady Gosden. Gosden senior said: 'We're delighted with the filly, she ran a very good race. She had a little trouble getting out of a pocket but she's run very nicely.
'She's learned a lot there, that's her first run on grass. That's what's happened this year, she's done two pieces of work on grass and everything else has been on the all-weather.
'We'll see what we want to do over the next few days but we are probably pointing towards the Ribblesdale, that looks the logical thing to do and we couldn't be happier with the run. She showed a great attitude, the second filly is nice and they were a long way clear of the fourth.
'These fillies are having to learn a lot very quickly and she probably got onto the course wondering what was underneath her feet!'

Aidan O'Brien eyes Arc-Breeders' Cup double for fast-improving Minnie Hauk

The Queen, no less, wanted to be in the post-race photographs with Minnie Hauk after her win in the Group One Yorkshire Oaks here on Thursday, and while the race itself was effectively over as soon as the odds-on favourite hit the front two furlongs out, there was abundant evidence of the qualities that will make her a major player in the autumn's global championship events. Aidan O'Brien's filly was an unknown quantity, unraced in anything but maiden company at two, when she lined up for the Cheshire Oaks in May, but her win on the Roodeye has now been followed by three straight Group One victories, including a neck defeat of a stable-companion, Whirl, in the Oaks at Epsom in June. And all the while, there has been a continuing sense that we have yet to see the best of Minnie Hauk. 'She's a classy filly with a high level of ability,' Ryan Moore, her jockey, said afterwards. 'A decent tempo on a flat track and nice ground probably contributed to her winning the way she did, and she's always had a habit of just doing enough. 'When I asked her to go and win her race at the two, she dug in and the last furlong was easy. She does everything right, she gets the mile-and-a-half well but she could probably come back [in trip], and she seems to handle slow ground and quick ground. She's professional and does everything nicely and she has plenty of options.' The most obvious possibilities are one or both of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in early October, and the Breeders' Cup Turf at Del Mar a month later, though Whirl is also a leading candidate for the same events. 'We've always felt the better the race, the better she'll be,' O'Brien said. 'She's won well in the end, our filly, she obviously stays very well and always finishes her race off well. She doesn't kill herself getting there but she's always finishing. 'She has to be close to the top of our pecking order for the Arc, she's an improving filly at this time of year. She could go to the Breeders' Cup Turf but also the Arc [and] Whirl could go with her.' Fillies continue to dominate the Arc betting after Thursday's race, with Andrew Balding's Kalpana, the King George runner-up, narrowly favoured at around 7-1, with Whirl and Minnie Hauk at 9-1 and 10-1 respectively. Ten juveniles have tried and failed to take advantage of the weight concession from their older rivals since Kingsgate Native's success in the Nunthorpe Stakes in 2007, but that has not deterred the connections of Lady Iman and Spicy Marg, who will face 15 rivals in the feature race on day three of York's Ebor Festival. Both are fillies and so get the maximum allowance, with just 8st 2lb to carry, and Lady Iman, unbeaten at the five-furlong trip, is the narrow favourite at around 5-1 in the early betting for what is an exceptionally open renewal of the meeting's big sprint. In all, a dozen of the 17 runners are priced up at between 5-1 and 20-1, for a race that has had winners at 100-1, 40-1 twice and 28-1 over the last 15 years. Timeform's ratings confirm that there is very little to choose between the majority of the field, and that while Lady Iman undoubtedly has more scope for improvement than most of her rivals, she still has something to find with several runners at bigger odds. Solid alternatives include Jm Jungle, who has excellent track form and put up a careerbest to win the Group Two King George Stakes at Goodwood last time, but fillies and mares have a fine record in the Nunthorpe in recent years and York is also likely to play to the strengths of the runner-up there, She's Quality (3.35). Jack Davison's filly has been second on all four of her starts this season, and showed impressive speed to lead until well inside the final furlong in the Charge at Sandown on Eclipse day. She should see things out better on the Knavesmire and is an interesting bet at around 10-1 to give her a trainer a first Group One success. York 1.50 French Duke has struggled to get involved from tricky draws at Ascot and Goodwood on his last two starts, but deserves one more chance to rediscover his promising three-year-old form in a smaller field, and at a track that gives his rider more room for manoeuvre. York 2.25 John and Thady Gosden's Trawlerman established himself as the leading stayer in Britain with a seven-length success in the Ascot Gold Cup last time and a 3lb penalty for that win is unlikely to prevent him following up. York 3.00 This is not the strongest renewal of the Gimcrack by any stretch and the likely favourite, Do Or Do Not, is still a maiden after five starts, so the way could be open for the once-raced Lifeplan to follow up his cosy debut success at Thirsk in July. York 4.10 Zgharta had no luck at all in running at Goodwood last time and will be strongly fancied to make amends off the same mark.

Aidan O'Brien puts Minnie Hauk near the top of Arc list after fourth Oaks win

The winner of the Cheshire Oaks, Oaks and Irish Oaks, added the Yorkshire Oaks to her haul at York on Thursday to improve her chances in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Aidan O'Brien put Minnie Hauk near the top of his list of candidates for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after she completed an Oaks four-timer at York on Thursday. ‌ The three-year-old lined up in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks having already won the Cheshire Oaks, English Oaks and Irish Oaks. With only four runners the Ryan Moore-ridden Minnie Hauk went off the 8-15 favourite and emerged a comfortable three and a half lengths winner over the David O'Meara-trained Estrange. ‌ O'Brien said: 'She's beautiful, she does everything right, she cruises, she's a lovely mover and obviously the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf, all those races are there for her. ‌ 'Ryan said the (Breeders' Cup) Turf, so she's obviously given him an unbelievable feel. Ryan gave her a class ride, he was very cool on her. She is classy and he gave her a very confident ride. 'It wasn't going to be a Mickey Mouse race today, they were going to go an even gallop without going crazy. Ryan has always said the stronger the tempo, the better we're going to see. She's very exciting.' Victory was a welcome filip 24 hours after Eclipse winner Delacroix was well beaten by Ombudsman in their head-to-head for the Juddmonte International and Derby winner Lambourn was defeated in the Great Voltigeur Stakes. ‌ Minnie Hauk was cut to 10-1 (from 14-1) for the Arc by William Hill whose market is headed by Kalpana on 5-1. 'It was good for Ryan, he had a tough day yesterday and things didn't work out but the professional that he is he didn't flinch,' O'Brien went on. ‌ 'It was a nicely-run race, even though there were only four in it, I think the second is a nice filly, isn't she. She's won well in the end our filly, she obviously stays very well and always finishes her race off well. She doesn't kill herself getting there but she's always finishing. 'She has to be close to the top of our pecking order for the Arc, she's an improving filly at this time of year. She could go to the Breeders' Cup Turf but also the Arc. Whirl could go with her. 'Whirl could go to the Vermeille or Irish Champion, but there's a good chance Delacroix goes back to the Irish Champion and if John (Gosden) brings his horse (Ombudsman) it will be great.' Minnie Hauk secures Oaks treble with win at York

Minnie Hauk secured an Oaks treble with a comfortable victory in the Yorkshire Oaks on day two of the Ebor meeting at three-year-old filly, ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by Aidan O'Brien, beat runner-up Estrange by three and a half had already won the Oaks at Epsom in June and the Irish Oaks at the Curragh in Hauk's stablemate, Garden of Eden, finished in third place and Qilin Queen was O'Meara's Estrange did try to put late pressure on Minnie Hauk but was unable to match the 8-15 favourite's pace and Hauk's win gives trainer O'Brien a record-equalling ninth Yorkshire Oaks victory, while this was also jockey Moore's fifth win in the race.O'Brien told ITV Racing: "She's beautiful. She does everything right, she cruises, she's a lovely mover and obviously the [Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe] and the Breeders' Cup Turf, all those races are there for her."Moore, 41, added: "She is a straightforward filly and her record indicates how classy she is. She does not do a lot when she hits the front, but she does what you ask her to do." O'Brien and Moore were presented with their trophies by Queen Camilla, who also came down to the winners' enclosure to offer her congratulations."We are honoured Her Majesty came over and appeared in the picture," O'Brien said. Also on Thursday, Royal Fixation beat fellow 5-2 joint favourite America Queen in the Group Two Lowther Fixation, trained by Ed Walker and ridden by William Buick, finished off strongly to sprint away and win the race for two-year-old fillies by a length."She is not very big but has a big heart. I wanted to put it right today as I felt we should have won at Newmarket [she finished second] last time," said 37-year-old Buick.
