Teen drowns in Segamat River, body found 5km from last seen spot
Segamat Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) operations commander Mohd Hazim Abd Razak said they were alerted to the incident at 4.08 pm.
According to him, 11 personnel from Segamat BBP, along with four assets, namely a Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT), two four-wheel-drive vehicles and a boat, were dispatched to the scene.
He said the victim's body was found along the riverbank about five kilometres from where he was reported to have gone missing.
The search operation ended at 6.40 pm. — Bernama

ALOR SETAR: Theft by drug addicts has become the leading cause of rising index crime rates in Kedah, says police chief CP Adzli Abu Shah. He noted that from Jan 1 to Sunday (July 27), Kedah recorded 2,852 index crime cases, with 47 percent involving theft linked to drug addicts. "Kedah police will maintain the focus outlined by former police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh, which is to eradicate drug-related crime. "We believe that if drug issues can be tackled and eliminated as much as possible, the overall index crime rate in Kedah can be brought down," he said. Adzli was responding to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail's recent comments in conjunction with the 2025 National Anti-Drug Day celebration held in Jitra last Friday, urging the Kedah government to step up efforts to remove the state from the top four nationwide for drug addiction rates. On a separate note, he said Kedah police are stepping up border security measures despite the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia conflict occurring far from the state's northern border. "Precautionary steps are being taken by strengthening security at Malaysia's border checkpoints," he said, adding that despite growing support from agencies such as the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency, constant vigilance remains essential. "We must not let our guard down. We are committed to ensuring the country's borders remain secure," he said. Earlier, Adzli attended the rank insignia presentation ceremony for the Kedah police chief and deputy police chief, along with the handover ceremony for the deputy chief post, witnessed by Special Branch director CP Datuk Ibrahim Darus at the police contingent headquarters. Adzli, who was the acting police chief, was officially appointed to the role and promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police (CP). MACC questions 32 in RM950m scrap metal smuggling probe
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recorded statements from 32 individuals as part of an ongoing investigation into a scrap metal and e-waste smuggling syndicate. The probe follows recent raids conducted across five states, targeting a network suspected of evading export taxes worth over RM950 million. A source familiar with the case revealed that the MACC is identifying additional individuals to assist in the investigation. Authorities are also examining potential corruption under Section 16 and Section 18 of the MACC Act. Among those questioned was a man holding the title Datuk Seri, who is reportedly linked to the smuggling operation. However, no arrests have been made so far. Earlier reports indicated that the syndicate allegedly paid bribes to enforcement officers, resulting in significant tax losses for the government. Three T'ganu local authority officers remanded in graft probe
KUALA TERENGGANU: Three local authority officers in Terengganu have been remanded for six days for allegedly accepting bribes totalling RM25,000 in exchange for facilitating the approval process of building plans. The remand order until Saturday (Aug 2) was issued by Magistrate Yuhanis Mohd Roslan after allowing an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). A source said on Monday (July 28) that the suspects, two men and a woman aged between 40 and 50, were detained at 2.30pm on Sunday (July 27) when they turned up to give their statements at the Terengganu MACC office. "Initial investigations found that the three suspects allegedly committed the offences between 2015 and 2019. "They are believed to have received bribes amounting to about RM25,000 through separate fund transfers into their respective personal bank accounts,' the source said, adding that the alleged bribes involved 14 projects. The source also said the arrests followed the detention of a government agency director in January over a bribery case involving some RM900,000. State MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the arrests when contacted, saying the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. He did not rule out the possibility of further arrests to assist in the investigation. – Bernama
