Commanding officer Salehin Sulaiman said the seized items included approximately 5,920 tonnes of e-waste, 9.45 tonnes of plastics and 1,031 tonnes of metal. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The 5th Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF) crippled a syndicate involved in scrap and e-waste processing after it seized scrap, e-waste and equipment worth more than RM190 million in a raid in Segamat, Johor. Commanding officer Salehin Sulaiman said the operation resulted in the arrests of 56 individuals, including two Malaysians – a lorry driver and a female clerk – employed at the premises. The syndicate is believed to have been active for about a year. He said the joint operation was conducted on June 16 with the environment and immigration departments and the Segamat Municipal Council. 'The seized items include about 5,920 tonnes of e-waste, 9.45 tonnes of various plastics, 1,031 tonnes of metal, 23 forklifts, 42 machines and a trailer lorry, with the total seizure amounting to RM190,715,900. 'These arrests and seizures have successfully crippled a syndicate network involved in scrap and e-waste processing, particularly in Segamat,' Bernama reported him as saying. Separately, the battalion detained 25 undocumented migrants in a raid at an oil palm plantation in Ladang Tumbuk, Selangor, at about 6.30am on April 14. Salehin said those arrested, including nine women, failed to produce valid identification documents and are believed to have just arrived in the country by an unregulated sea route. 'All of them were handed over to Kuala Langat police for further action under the Immigration Act 1959/63,' he said.

‘Stay tuned', Anwar teases on major announcement
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim uploaded a poster which said that an 'extraordinary gesture of appreciation for Malaysians' is 'coming soon'. PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has hinted that a major announcement will be made in the coming days, while a PKR MP says a resolution has been reached involving judicial appointments and the chief justice's post. In a social media post, Anwar uploaded a poster which said that an 'extraordinary gesture of appreciation for Malaysians' is 'coming soon'. 'Stay tuned,' the prime minister said simply in his post. Separately, Segamat MP R Yuneswaran said he was made to understand that a resolution to the issue involving the judiciary has been reached and an official statement is expected in two to three days. 'Therefore, I urge all parties to stay calm and refrain from making speculations that could only worsen the situation,' he said on X. It is unclear if the announcement Anwar teased about is related to the decision involving the judiciary. Yuneswaran said he was confident that Anwar and the government were committed to ensuring the independence of the judiciary and to preventing the executive from interfering in the process of appointing judges. Subang MP Wong Chen also said on Facebook that an announcement would be made in a couple of days. He said he managed to speak at Anwar's meeting with PH MPs and raised all that he needed to bring up. 'I said what I needed to say, so wait for the news. There will be an announcement in a couple of days,' said the PKR MP. Earlier, government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said PH MPs were briefed on the issue involving the judiciary, among others, in the meeting which lasted nearly two hours. Anwar, meanwhile, said the meeting went 'very well'. The prime minister had also met Barisan Nasional MPs on Friday night, which he said was to clear the air on several current issues, including taxation, the RON95 petrol subsidy, and matters involving the judiciary.

Zahid tells Umno members to stop trampling each other, says internal feuds risk party's survival
SEGAMAT, July 6 — UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reminded the leadership and members to stay away from the culture of putting each other down which is not beneficial to the party. Comparing the action to 'crabs in a bucket', he said all members should instead work together to strengthen the party's internal security for the survival of the party ahead of the upcoming 16th general election (GE16). 'Don't be like crabs in a bucket... all the crabs want to get out, but step on the others so that they can climb up. 'In the end, not a single one comes out, all die in the bucket. Why are we dying in a bucket because we trampled on each other?,' he said at the closing of the Segamat UMNO Division Delegates Meeting at the Taman Yayasan Multipurpose Hall, here yesterday. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, stressed that the culture of pointing fingers and assuming that only one is right will only break the people's confidence in UMNO. 'Any differences of opinion among members must be expressed in a civilised and ethical manner, especially when discussing internal party issues. 'If today we are small leaders, God willing one day we can become big leaders, but if we are rude to others today, when we rise, more people will be rude to us,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, also called on the entire UMNO machinery to remain focused on efforts to strengthen unity among the grassroots and not make differences of opinion a cause for division. Also present were Johor UMNO Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Segamat UMNO Division chief Datuk Zahari Sarip. — Bernama

AEON launches reforestation drive in Johor, targets 30,000 trees in Segamat after Bidor forest success
KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — AEON has launched a new three-year reforestation initiative in Segamat, Johor, following the successful completion of its Malaysia-Japan Friendship Forest Programme in Bidor, Perak. The Segamat Reforestation Project was announced during a ceremony at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) headquarters in Kepong last Friday. It marks the next chapter in AEON's long-standing environmental sustainability efforts, in collaboration with FRIM. AEON said the project will see 30,000 rainforest trees planted across 36 hectares in three phases between 2025 and 2027, replicating the ecological impact of the Bidor initiative. The site in Bidor, once a degraded tin mining area, was transformed into a thriving ecosystem with 30,000 trees planted over 22.75 hectares between 2014 and 2023. AEON CO. (M) BHD managing director Naoya Okada and FRIM director-general Dato' Dr Ismail Parlan formalised the Segamat collaboration by exchanging a Letter of Intent (LOI), witnessed by FRIM deputy director-general (Research) Dr Norwati Muhammad and AEON deputy managing director Tsugutoshi Seko. As part of the launch, a symbolic tree-planting ceremony was held at FRIM's Padang 44, with native rainforest species including meranti temak nipis (Anthoshorea roxburghii), meranti tembaga (Rubroshorea leprosula), and sesenduk (Endospermum diadenum). Okada said the new project builds on the achievements in Bidor, which now serves as a research and seed production site and forms part of the government's 100 million tree planting campaign. 'The Bidor project is a testament to what can be achieved when corporate responsibility is combined with scientific expertise. AEON is proud to carry this legacy forward in Segamat,' he said, adding that AEON has planted over 557,000 trees nationwide since beginning its green initiatives in 1991. Dr Ismail said FRIM values AEON's ongoing support in environmental conservation and welcomes further collaboration. 'The restoration efforts in Bidor have not only revitalised the land but also attracted a variety of fauna, including migratory birds. We look forward to expanding our partnership with AEON,' he said. AEON said the reforestation initiative forms part of its broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals, promoting biodiversity, community engagement and sustainable development.
