Trucking company surpasses major industry milestone with all-electric semi-truck fleet: 'Leading the way'

Yahoo22-02-2025

Schneider National exemplifies the positive impact of electric vehicles as its semi truck fleet passes the 6 million mile mark.
Electrek reported that Schneider reached this epic milestone one year after hitting the 1 million mile benchmark. The company mainly operates in Southern California. It has over 130 semi trucks in operation. California's JETSI mainly funds the fleet. The EPA's FY18 Targeted Airshed Grant, Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust, and California's HVIP incentive program also support the fleet.
Many doubted these battery-electric trucks. But this huge achievement proves doubters wrong. According to Electrek, Schneider began its EV mission around 2020. Reaching 6 million electric miles after only five years is remarkable.
The fleet prevented roughly 20 million pounds of harmful carbon pollution from being created. That's like if 2,100 gas-powered car owners stopped driving altogether, as noted by Electrek.
These electric trucks lower operating and ownership costs, which means more affordable transportation. This can help businesses and consumers save money on goods.
Electric semi trucks are also better for other drivers on the road. They're safer and less likely to cause an accident. Their low center of gravity reduces the risk of rollovers. Plus, they're quieter, reducing noise in residential areas.
These trucks also benefit the environment. They substantially reduce transportation pollution. This improves air quality for everyone while creating a cooler planet.
Reaching 6 million miles is a triumph for the EV industry. It shows the feasibility of switching from gas to electric. Reducing and even eliminating transportation pollution is possible. If these trucks are used nationwide, dangerous pollution could be reduced by millions and millions of pounds.
David Carson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Daimler Truck North America, expressed pride over Schneider's success to Electrek. He called it "a reminder for us all to keep working on overcoming challenges together on the path to zero emissions."

Schneider President and CEO Mark Rourke highlighted the company's commitment to EVs. He called the milestone "a testament to our steadfast dedication."
Rourke continued, "Leading the way in adopting electric vehicle technology not only benefits the environment but also serves as an example of the broad service capabilities and flexibility we can offer to customers."

Shipbuilder quietly launches massive vessel with mission to reshape global travel: 'We're building the future'

Australian shipbuilder Incat has launched a first-of-its-kind electric ship that reaches over 420 feet in length and holds over 250 tons of batteries. This is a significant milestone in reducing the planet-harming pollution that comes from shipping and accounts for 2.9% of global pollution caused by humans. Stephen Casey, Incat's CEO, said at the unveiling of the ship, per Electrek: "We're not just building a ship — we're building the future." The vessel, dubbed the China Zorrilla, "proves that large-scale, low-emission transport solutions are not only possible, they are ready now." Electrek reported that the company built the vessel for the South American ferry operator Buquebus. The China Zorrilla will be able to carry 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. Buquebus makes transport for travelers from Buenos Aires to Uruguay multiple times a day, meaning this electric vessel will dramatically cut down the impact of traditional ship and air travel. The China Zorrilla comes at a time when vessels like megayachts are facing criticism for their unparalleled environmental impact. Megayachts can emit over 22,000 tons of harmful carbon pollution per year. Other forms of transport, like air travel, make up another 2.5% of global pollution. Meanwhile, cars account for about 10% of global pollution. Incat's new fully electric ship means that travelers who may have once opted for personal yachts, commercial flights, or traditional travel by car now have the option to travel internationally fully electric. The benefits of electric ships are many. One article revealed that it is the oil and fuel pollution from boats and ships that pollute our waterways with everyday oil leaks, refueling, and engine pollution. Pollution in our waterways leads to public health impacts, such as damage to our drinking water and food supply. When compared to electric ships, such issues are nearly nonexistent. "Electric boats do not require any fuel and very little oil, so they are far less likely to cause any harm to wildlife or water users, making them a great way to significantly reduce water pollution," according to Electric Boats. The ship "represents a giant leap forward in sustainable shipping," said Robert Clifford, Incat's chairman, per Electrek. To Incat, it's not just a step forward for the company — "but for the future of maritime transport." Would you buy an EV if it only took 5 minutes to charge? Toyota stuns with sleek electric SUV packed with luxury features: 'More than just a vehicle'

Toyota just released its newest electric vehicle — the C-HR+ — in Norway, Electrek reported, and the company has been hyping it for its "stunning" appearance and impressive range. While Toyota announced the vehicle in March, Norway is the first market to receive the 373-mile-range SUV. The C-HR+ could also cost less than other electric SUVs, according to Electrek, which projected it to start in the $30,000 range if it hit the U.S. in 2026. Piotr Pawlak, president of Toyota Norway, said the C-HR+ is "more than just a vehicle — it's a statement." Pawlak said the vehicle was "stunning" and that it "embodies Toyota's vision of blending fun-to-drive excitement with eco-conscious innovation." The C-HR+ comes with a 55.7 or 77 kWh battery, featuring the 373-mile range on the larger of the two batteries. The larger battery version is also available with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, making it "the perfect electric SUV for Norwegian roads," according to Toyota. Improving upon a gas-powered version of the vehicle, which was discontinued in 2022, the C-HR+ includes a roomier interior with more space for passengers and cargo. The new EV will also be Toyota's most powerful vehicle in Europe, reaching 0 to 62 miles an hour in 5.2 seconds with 343 horsepower. While EVs can cost more than traditional vehicles initially, the C-HR+ could be more affordable and tax credits up to $7,500 can offset the price of EVs. EVs also cost less over their lifetimes, requiring less maintenance and saving 60% on annual fuel costs, according to a 2020 Consumer Reports study. Fueling EVs with electricity produced by solar panels can increase these savings further. Installing solar panels, like EVs, may qualify you for tax credits, and EnergySage provides resources and quotes for installation. Solar panels also improve the environmental impact of EVs, since 79% of electricity comes from dirty energy resources like coal and natural gas. Despite the resources required to charge and manufacture them, EVs are better for the environment. EVs surpass gas-fueled cars as being more environmentally friendly after 13,500 miles, one Reuters study claimed, while another MIT study found gas-fueled cars emit 350 grams of carbon per mile over their lifetimes while EVs emit just 200. Toyota's C-HR+ is the latest EV among an increase in all-electric models across automakers. The vehicle follows Toyota's 25-year EV history and will launch in other European markets later this year. According to Electrek, "For those in the US, we'll have to wait for the official word, but if it does arrive, which would likely be in 2026, the C-HR+ would sit below the bZ4X," which Electrek said would mean a price range between $30,000 and $35,000. Ford Announces Concerning Recall of Explorer, Nearly 500,000 Affected

Over the past month, Ford has announced recalls of more than 1.5 million vehicles, with the latest recall impacting nearly 500,000 sport utility vehicles. Earlier this month, Ford revealed a recall on its F-150 Lightning, which just surpassed Tesla's Cybertruck as the best-selling electric truck on the market, according to Electrek. "Certain vehicles may have an improperly torqued nut on the ball joint which secures the front upper control arm to the knuckle assembly. An improperly torqued nut on the ball joint can result in separation of the front upper control arm from the knuckle assembly," Ford said in a statement regarding its latest recall on nearly 30,000 trucks. That announcement came just a few weeks after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed a recall from the auto manufacturer for more than one million vehicles ranging over 44 different makes and models after a software error emerged that can cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze, or not display when the vehicle is in reverse. "Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Bronco, F-150, 2021-2024 Edge, 2023-2024 Escape, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600, 2022-2024 Expedition, 2022-2025 Transit, 2021-2023 Mach-E, 2024 Ranger, Mustang, 2021-2023 Lincoln Nautilus, 2022-2024 Navigator, and 2023-2024 Corsair vehicles," the NHTSA announced. This time around the American icon is recalling one of its most popular offerings: the Explorer. Ford opened the recall on models from June 11, 2015 - April 19, 2017 after "a B-pillar trim applique that detaches while driving can create a road hazard for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash," the company revealed. The remedy for the recall is still in the works. Dealers are expected to be notified on May 27, 2025 while the mailing of interim owner notification letters is expected to begin June 9, 2025 and is expected to be completed by June 13, Announces Concerning Recall of Explorer, Nearly 500,000 Affected first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 5, 2025
