CBUAE organises climate forum and 'Network for Greening the Financial System' meeting in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: Under the Patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates, the CBUAE is organising its first Climate Forum and a meeting of the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resorts, Abu Dhabi, on 26 June 2025. The two-day event demonstrates the CBUAE's commitment in driving sustainable finance and leading the transition towards a more sustainable financial system, in line with the UAE's vision to achieve net zero by 2050. The Climate Forum brings together financial leaders, policymakers, international experts in sustainable finance and in climate risks, and senior officials from regulatory bodies, central banks, and international financial institutions. The aim is to exchange insights on ways to foster better integration of climate policies in risk management and investment, and to explore effective solutions for enhancing financial sector resilience in the face of future climate and environmental challenges. It will also address frameworks for activating regional and international cooperation in the areas of monetary policy, regulation and sustainable Islamic finance, thereby strengthening the complementary roles between the public and private sectors. This further underscores the UAE's growing position as a regional and international hub for leading the global dialogue on the future of sustainable finance. The NGFS meeting will be centred on 'greening' monetary policy frameworks. Discussions will focus on integrating climate change impacts into monetary policy formulation and operations, alongside reviewing the NGFS's latest work progress and future plans. Since its inception in 2017, the NGFS has become a global force, uniting over 160 central banks and financial supervisors. His Excellency Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the CBUAE, said: "The convening of the Climate Forum and the Network for Greening the Financial System meeting marks a milestone amidst the global shifts in economic policies and the growing climate challenges. In line with the wise leadership's vision for the UAE and its commitment to achieving net zero by 2050, the CBUAE continues to solidify its pivotal role in spearheading financial sustainability. This is achieved by strengthening the green finance infrastructure and developing regulatory frameworks that support the integration of climate risks within the financial sector's ecosystem, thereby enhancing its resilience, reinforcing its stability, and achieving the desired balance between economic growth and sustainability."

Space42 introduces Thuraya Mobile Broadband Hotspot

Space42, the UAE-based AI-powered SpaceTech company, today announced the commercial availability of Thuraya Mobile Broadband Hotspot (Thuraya MBH). This lightweight, secure, and affordable broadband terminal is designed to extend critical communications to users on the move in remote environments. As demand for seamless, reliable connectivity accelerates, areas across land and sea remain outside the coverage of terrestrial networks. This coverage gap can endanger lives, delay emergency response, and disrupt mission-critical operations. Thuraya MBH addresses these challenges with an easy-to-deploy solution that delivers reliable satellite connectivity for remote areas across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia. Thuraya MBH is built to operate on the existing Thuraya satellite network and is fully compatible with the upcoming Thuraya-4 satellite, one of the largest and most advanced mobile satellite solutions (MSS) ever produced. It is among the first of more than 15 new Thuraya-4-enabled products that will serve both government and commercial markets. Sulaiman Al Ali, Chief Commercial Officer, Space Services at Space42, said, 'Thuraya MBH ensures critical communications remain operational in environments where terrestrial networks cannot reach. This terminal integrates satellite mobility with existing infrastructure, providing reliable connectivity for civil government and commercial users across land and sea. From emergency response teams operating in remote locations to maritime vessels beyond coastal coverage, MBH delivers secure communications when conventional networks fail. The platform addresses real operational challenges while maintaining the robust security standards essential for mission-critical applications. This launch also advances two of Space42's strategic pillars: being a global Non-Terrestrial-Network (NTN) leader and being a trusted leader in secure connectivity.' Thuraya MBH is designed for operational simplicity and resilient performance in field conditions. The all-in-one terminal supports satellite connectivity for vehicles and vessels operating beyond terrestrial coverage, with a durable form factor and minimal setup requirements. It enables reliable communication in scenarios such as maritime operations moving in and out of coastal coverage, as well as emergency responses beyond cellular range. MBH is well-suited for use cases such as push-to-talk (PTT) communications, email, file transfers, remote asset monitoring, and IoT. It supports operations across civil government, remote utility fieldwork, coastal surveillance, and border security patrols. It is also an ideal solution for maritime users, including fishing vessels, yachts, ferries, bulk carriers, and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), where reliable satellite connectivity is essential. Thuraya MBH meets IP67/IP68 durability standards and features built-in capabilities, including tracking, geofencing, and distress alerts, when integrated with third-party systems. Its security architecture features multi-level access controls, SIM pairing, PIN protection, and firewall management, ensuring secure and compliant operations across various sectors, including fisheries, border security, civil government, energy, and transportation. The terminal also supports affordable data plans, a streamlined user interface, and 15 language functionalities. Designed for compatibility with external systems, it enables fleet and asset management in mobile, remote environments. An emergency fallback feature allows users to transmit text-based emails when onboard networks are unavailable. Thuraya MBH will be available through authorised Thuraya service partners starting today, 19th June 2025.

How important is cyber insurance in this digital age?

In this digital age, your most valuable assets may no longer be locked in a safe but stored online. As cybercrime continues to surge across the UAE, an increasing number of individuals and businesses are waking up to an uncomfortable truth: most traditional insurance policies don't protect against cyberattacks. Whether it's stolen personal data, hacked bank accounts, ransomware attacks, or a deepfake scam draining your savings, cybercrime is no longer a niche concern - it's a real, rising financial threat. According to the UAE Cybersecurity Council, the country witnessed a significant surge in cyber threats last year, with ransomware attacks increasing by 32 per cent compared to the previous year. Other forms of cyberattacks, including phishing, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), and scams, have also seen a rise of up to 18 per cent. With UAE residents spending more of their lives — and dirhams — online, it may be time to consider cyber insurance. Once seen as a niche policy, it's fast becoming a core part of financial planning. GIG Gulf, a leading insurance provider in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region, recently launched the UAE's first home insurance product that includes cyber-fraud cover as standard. 'Cyber Comfort' covers every family member of the household and provides direct access to a dedicated cyber resolution team available 24/7 to guide victims through recovery in case of a digital breach. Franck Heimburger, chief personal lines officer at GIG Gulf, said: 'Today, our homes are more connected than ever, and with that connectivity comes new risks. By embedding cyber protection into our home insurance, we're taking a bold step to meet the evolving needs of our customers. It's not just about insuring what's inside your home anymore – it's about securing the digital lives of the people who live in it.' Etisalat by e& offers personal cybercrime insurance in the UAE, providing coverage against various online threats and financial losses. This includes protection against online banking fraud, credit card fraud, loss of online purchases, and cyberbullying. Stuti Sri, co-founder of financial comparison site Creditcardfinder, said: 'As cyber threats become more personal - think online banking fraud, social media hacking, and identity theft - insurers in the UAE are responding. Providers like GIG Gulf, Etisalat by e& (in partnership with Union Insurance) now offer personal cyber insurance, either as stand-alone policies or as add-ons to home insurance. The market is still maturing, but flexibility is increasing, which is good news for consumers.' Coverage typically includes online banking fraud, identity theft and data restoration, phishing and cyber extortion, ransomware attacks, and losses from non-delivery of paid online goods. Some premium plans can offer up to $10,000–$12,000 (Dh36,00 to Dh44,000) in annual protection. Some also include access to digital security support and legal advice. But Sri points out that insurers expect policyholders to take reasonable precautions. 'That includes using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and keeping antivirus software updated. If you're careless — say, using '123456' as your password or sharing your login on public Wi-Fi — it could weaken your claim.' In the UAE, a current trend is social engineering scams, where attackers manipulate people into giving away confidential information, such as passwords, bank details, or access to systems. Instead of hacking computers, social engineers 'hack' human psychology — using deception, trust, fear, urgency, or curiosity to trick people into taking unsafe actions. These often happen on Whatsapp and involves deepfake voice scams. 'The main cyber threats that we see around today in daily life are phishing attempts with links coming with names like Salik, RTA, Aramex and Dubai Police. They ask us to click on a link and this leads to fraud on our credit card or bank accounts,' added GIG Gulf. 'Today we see many replicas of well-known websites which look extremely legit but when a purchase is done and we never receive goods we ordered, we realise something is wrong. It is in such cases where this policy steps in.' It's not just individuals falling prey, companies are also victims to cybercrime, often through their employees. Alexandra O'Hare, Senior Associate for law firm Kennedys, said they have seen a year-on-year increase in the number of cyber instructions received, both globally and in the region. Phishing remains the most common way that organisations fall victim to a cyber-attack. 'Typically, this is in the form of a business email compromise attack which involves social engineering in order to convince an employee to surrender their login credentials. As it relies on human-to-human connections, it is much harder to detect using traditional security tools like endpoint detection and response. The best way to prevent these kinds of incidents is to better educate your workforce and promote a culture that encourages swift reporting when mistakes are made.' She agrees that nowadays cyber insurance is essential. 'No organisation is impenetrable meaning that it is more likely than not that an organisation will suffer a cyber incident at some stage.' For anyone concerned about cybercrime, Sri's advice is simple: 'Take digital safety seriously. Back up your data, secure your devices, and don't underestimate how convincing some scams can be. Cyber insurance is a smart layer of protection - but prevention still matters most.'
