However, despite the bail being sanctioned on a bond of ₹2 lakh along with surety conditions, both remained in custody due to a preventive detention order under COFEPOSA, which allows for detention of up to a year without formal charges, solely based on suspicion of smuggling.
The case dates back to March, when Ranya arrived from Dubai and attempted to pass through the green channel at Kempegowda International Airport, which is designated for passengers with no dutiable goods. Her nervous demeanor raised suspicion among DRI officials, prompting a thorough search conducted by female officers.
During the search, authorities recovered 14.2 kilograms of gold worth approximately ₹12.56 crore. She was taken into custody immediately.

Ranya's prior attempts to secure bail were rejected multiple times—twice by local courts and later by the Karnataka High Court.

HC slams officials of Directorate General of GST Intelligence over illegal detention, dodgy surveillance

Chandigarh: Virtually reprimanding the officials of the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), the Punjab and Haryana high court found prima facie evidence that officials illegally detained a person overnight in violation of his constitutional rights. The court expressed serious concern over procedural lapses, obstruction of a court-appointed warrant officer, and the apparent disregard for fundamental liberties in a high-profile GST investigation. In its detailed order, Justice Harpreet Singh Brar observed that DGGI's actions were legally questionable and constitutionally untenable. The prolonged stay was deemed coercive, especially as the detainee was not free to leave, and his family had to approach the court for his release. Further rejecting the DGGI's claim that CCTV cameras were non-functional due to construction, the court noted that the explanation about faulty CCTVs appeared deliberate and evasive, as all the electronic and digital resources of the zonal office, including the E-office portal, were fully functional. The observations from the HC were made in the wake of a habeas corpus petition filed by Barkha Bansal, seeking the release of her husband Bharat Lal Garg, whom she alleged was unlawfully detained by DGGI officials starting June 4. "It is apparent that while DGGI officials put the detainee under restraint at 5:46 pm on June 5, they did not show any urgency in supplying the grounds of arrest to him. As such, the subsequent process of arrest and remand stands vitiated. Moreover, the DGGI officials also failed to supply the detainee with the 'reasons to believe' that he committed an offence under the CGST Act, necessitating his arrest. Such conduct is in clear violation of the ratio laid down by the Supreme Court in different cases and would therefore render the arrest of the detainee illegal and non est in the eyes of the law," the HC observed. The matter has now been fixed for July 30 for further consideration of the issue revolving around the obstruction caused to the warrant officer appointed by the HC, as well as for the release of the detainee in question. "The Additional Director General of Goods and Service Tax Intelligence, Chandigarh zonal unit, is directed to file an affidavit showing complete compliance with the directions issued by the Supreme Court in a 2021 case titled Paramvir Singh Saini versus Baljit Singh regarding operational CCTV cameras during interrogation and also to deliberate therein why the directions issued by this court on July 2 regarding the production of records have not been complied with," the HC observed in its order released on Wednesday. In this case, the HC on June 5 appointed a warrant officer to inspect the DRI office located in the Central Revenue Building, Sector 17, Chandigarh. The warrant officer, accompanied by local police, recovered the detainee from the premises of an IRS officer, where he was allegedly being held under guard by a departmental peon. Later, on July 2, the ADG (GST) was directed to file an affidavit naming all officials present during the incident and disclosing the status of CCTV installations, in line with the guidelines prescribed by the Supreme Court. Illegal Custody "The court does not find any justifiable reasons to condone keeping the detainee in the zonal office for over 30 hours. Curiously, a prima facie cognisable offence was yet to be made out against the detainee, and in spite of that, he was kept in the zonal office overnight and subjected to prolonged interrogation," said Justice Harpreet Singh Brar.

All police to be trained in MAP-Drugs app as Karnataka steps up anti-narcotics drive

BENGALURU: In an effort to make Karnataka a drug-free state, all police officials and relevant department personnel across the state will undergo training on the use of the MAP-Drugs app. District-wise targets will also be set to control drug abuse and sub-committees modelled on the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) will be established to coordinate efforts. These directions were issued during the 6th state-level Narco Coordination Committee meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, at Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday. DG & IGP M A Saleem, Narcotics and Organised Crime (Cyber Command Unit) head Pronab Mohanty, Additional Chief Secretary Mohammed Mohsin and other senior officials were present. According to a press release, the chief secretary emphasised the need for police and other department officials to adopt the MAP-Drugs app and instructed that drug-related information be made available in Kannada on government websites. She also urged districts to follow the Belagavi model in tackling drug abuse. To prevent drug trafficking, Rajneesh called for intensified checks at airports and recommended including customs officials in coordination meetings. She also directed action against unregistered pharmaceutical companies and mandated that all pharmacies display boards stating: Sale without doctor's prescription is prohibited. She called for strengthening monitoring mechanisms to regulate the sale of red-listed drugs. Rajneesh also called for improved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for managing de-addiction centres and directed that the public be informed about available services. Deputy commissioners were instructed to visit at least one de-addiction centre every month and submit reports. She also stressed the importance of conducting drug tests in hostels using testing kits and taking action against positive cases.

Renukaswamy murder case: SC hearing on bail plea of Darshan adjourned to tomorrow

Bengaluru: In a significant turn in the sensational Renukaswamy murder case, the Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on the Karnataka government's plea challenging Kannada actor Darshan's bail to July 24, effectively granting the actor two more days of relief. Darshan, who was arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Renukaswamy, is currently out on bail granted by the Karnataka High Court. The state government moved the Supreme Court questioning the High Court's decision to grant bail to the popular actor. The petition was scheduled to be heard today but was deferred after Darshan's senior counsel Siddharth Dave requested more time. Speaking to the media, Dave explained, 'Senior advocate Kapil Sibal was to appear for Darshan, but he had to attend to another matter today. I received this case only last night, so it was not possible to prepare arguments overnight. Therefore, I requested an adjournment of one or two days, which the Supreme Court accepted. The matter will now be heard on Thursday, July 24.' Dave added that he would not be arguing about the grounds for Darshan's arrest but would focus on the merits of the bail itself. Legal experts believe the Supreme Court's observations could have a crucial impact on the actor's fate. Earlier, the Supreme Court had questioned why Darshan's bail should not be cancelled and observed that the High Court had not exercised sufficient caution while granting it. If the apex court cancels the bail, Darshan could face re-arrest, which would severely disrupt the production of his upcoming film Devil. In total, 17 people have been granted bail in the Renukaswamy murder case, including prime accused Pavithra Gowda (A1) and Darshan (A2). The Karnataka government has specifically sought the cancellation of bail for seven of the accused, including Darshan and Pavithra. As the high-profile case continues to grab headlines, all eyes are now on the Supreme Court's next move. A final decision on the bail plea is expected when the matter comes up again this Thursday.
