Anwar casts ballot in PKR central leadership polls
JOHOR BARU: PKR president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today cast his vote in person in the party's central leadership election at the Berjaya Waterfront Hotel here.
Anwar arrived at the polling centre, which also serves as the venue for the 2024/2025 PKR Youth (AMK) National Congress, at about 12.07pm, accompanied by PKR advisory council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Also present were PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh, information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and Election Committee (JPP) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
Dr Wan Azizah also cast her vote.
After voting, Anwar spent some time mingling with PKR delegates and election staff.
Today's voting is to elect the members of the Central Leadership Council, the Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Leadership Council, and the Wanita Keadilan Leadership Council, which runs from 8am to 5pm.
A total of 32,030 delegates are eligible to vote, comprising 22,936 online voters and 9,094 physical voters.
In addition to the Berjaya Waterfront Hotel, physical voting is also held at the PKR Wanita's Congress at the Danga Bay Convention Centre.
For Sabah and Sarawak, physical voting is also taking place at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) in Penampang and the Penview Convention Centre in Kuching, respectively.
This election sees a total of 251 candidates contesting – 104 for the Central Leadership Council, 85 for the AMK Council and 62 for the Wanita's Council.
The prime minister is unopposed for the position of president, while the deputy president post features a one-on-one contest between Nurul Izzah Anwar and incumbent, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.
For the vice-president posts, 12 candidates are in the running, including four incumbents – Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
Meanwhile, Kamil remains unchallenged for the position of AMK chief, while the PKR Wanita's chief post sees a straight fight between Education Minister and incumbent Fadhlina Sidek and Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail.
Dr Zaliha earlier said the results of the party's new leadership election are expected to be known as early as tonight or by 2.30pm tomorrow.
Anwar is scheduled to officiate the 2024/2025 PKR National Congress at 9.25pm tonight at the Persada International Convention Centre here, which will be attended by party leadership and delegates. – BERNAMA

'If you stole public funds, you must return it', says Anwar

"I want to recover whatever was stolen from the country, and I hope everyone will cooperate so we can keep doing our work properly," he said. Anwar also stressed that he holds no personal grudges against those who wronged him in the past, but matters involving national wealth are a different story. "You used to insult me, jail me, beat me, now I am the Prime Minister and I have forgiven all of that. "But if you stole the people's money, you are obligated to return it," he said.

PM Anwar: Malaysia defends Iran's sovereign rights against Israeli aggression
LUMUT — Malaysia upholds the sovereign rights of all nations, including Iran, which was the victim of a recent Israeli attack, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said Malaysia, as a sovereign nation, must stand with Iran in its act of retaliation against Israel, to defend its rights and national dignity. PM Anwar: GST not suitable now, would burden the poor

The Prime Minister said GST is a broad-based tax that would be applied uniformly to all consumers, regardless of income, including fishermen, smallholders, or street cleaners. 'GST taxes everybody. While it is efficient and straightforward, just six per cent across the board, I must ask, if everyone has to pay six per cent, why should the poor and the unemployed be taxed as well?' he said when closing the Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 here today. Anwar said that although the opposition has suggested GST as a better option, the government has chosen to postpone its implementation to avoid burdening the people, who are still struggling with the rising cost of living. 'That's why we say we're not ready for GST. If, one day, the economy improves and the minimum wage reaches RM4,000 or more, then by all means, implement GST. But for now, I'm calling for it to be postponed, don't turn it into a political issue,' he said. Anwar said the government is retaining the Sales and Services Tax (SST), which is more targeted in nature, particularly on imported luxury items such as avocados and cod, products typically consumed by high-income earners. 'Local bananas are not taxed, but expensive imported fruits like avocados, usually consumed by those in the high-income group, should come with a slightly higher price. The same goes for cod, which is also imported and costly, so we tax it,' he said. As such, he emphasised that the tax revenue collected from these imported and high-end goods could be used to develop infrastructure that benefits the people, such as hospitals, schools, and the national defence system. However, Anwar said the tax revenue collected by the government is not solely meant to cover the country's operating expenditure, but also to fund various development and welfare initiatives that directly benefit the people.
