Anwar: Political appointments not abuse of power
JOHOR BARU: Political appointments that elevate qualified individuals should not be seen as an abuse of power but as rightful recognition of those who have contributed to a party's success, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said such appointments are a form of reward earned through sacrifice and dedication to the party's struggle to form the government. "There are many unsung individuals who voluntarily gave up their jobs and spent their savings to support the party's fight to become the ruling government," he said during his winding-up speech at the PKR National Congress 2025 here today. "I remember a former civil servant known as Pak Kudus from Tanjung Karang. He was among the first to support me after I was dismissed from office, surviving on a pension of just RM1,800 a month. "There were also academics and medical specialists who lost their jobs for backing me, burning through hundreds of thousands of ringgit without ever asking for anything in return. They chose to live out the rest of their lives modestly. "We must offer positions to qualified individuals as a gesture of appreciation for their decades of commitment and sacrifice," said Anwar. The PKR president and Tambun MP also emphasised that PKR remains one of the few political parties with a truly multiracial composition, and that all segments of society would be given equal rights and opportunities. "God willing, we will support those who have fought for the party. We are a serious multiracial party. While the core may be majority Malay and Bumiputera, the party represents all ethnic groups. "Even Chinese and Indian members have been elevated to the post of vice-president by Malay PKR members," he said. Anwar also praised the maturity of PKR delegates, noting that they could distinguish capable leaders deserving of elevation, regardless of any pre-arranged cai (slates) during party elections. "Delegates didn't care about the cai. Some groups brought in slates, but the results for the Central Leadership Council (MPP) elections turned out differently. "This is the difference between the two groups, and both have been embraced," he added. Commenting on the outcome of the party elections yesterday, Anwar said he was confident in the new leadership's ability to carry out their responsibilities, uphold the party's mission, and take it to greater heights.

Saifuddin emotional over Rafizi's possible exit from PKR
JOHOR BARU: Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail teared up today as he spoke about his interaction with outgoing PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli last night. Recounting what happened after the announcement of PKR's Central Leadership Council (MPP) election results, Saifuddin became emotional when mentioning Rafizi's name. "I hugged and apologised to Rafizi yesterday, crying and emotional. I admit that I am afraid of losing Rafizi from this party. "I am speaking from the heart and truly hope this message reaches him," he said during his speech at the winding-up session of the PKR National Congress here. Saifuddin, the former PKR secretary-general, also recalled his early days with Rafizi, when he was still with Umno. "When I was the Umno Youth deputy chief, Rafizi was still studying in London and returned after 10 years. "I welcomed Rafizi in Johor Baru when he returned, and we had a heart-to-heart discussion about his future before he chose to work with Petronas." Saifuddin said he eventually appointed Rafizi as a speechwriter for fear of losing his talents. "Now I am afraid of losing his talent and potential as a leader," he said. In the run-up to the PKR polls, Rafizi, who is also the economy minister, pledged to resign from the cabinet if he failed to retain the PKR deputy presidency. He lost the contest to Nurul Izzah Anwar in a straight fight. Earlier today, Rafizi, the Pandan member of parliament, urged his supporters to remain calm and trust the party's democratic process. Meanwhile, Saifuddin said that while there were many issues on which he agreed with Rafizi, there were also many on which they differed. Separately, Saifuddin appealed to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to console leaders hurt by the outcome of the party polls. "There will be those who are hurt. Datuk Seri (Anwar) is not only a father to Nurul Izzah, but a father to all of us. "Please quickly console those who are hurt and have hard feelings, so that the party will continue to be strengthened ahead of the Sabah state election and the 16th General Election," he said. He also offered some advice to Nurul Izzah, noting that there would be little time for rest after taking office. "Nurul Izzah can go to Mecca and rest for a while, but after this, get organised and work with the party's vice-presidents first, because the Sabah state election is waiting. "Reduce any clashes and infighting that weakens the party," he said.

Rafizi no-show at PKR National Congress final day after defeat
JOHOR BARU: Defeated PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli was notably absent on the final day of the party's National Congress 2025, held this morning at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre. As of 10.17am, the Pandan member of Parliament and Economy Minister had yet to make an appearance, sparking widespread speculation among delegates who were eagerly awaiting his presence at the congress hall. Rafizi had been a central figure throughout the campaign, vocally using the platform of the "Reviving Reformist Ideals Amid Power Challenges" (Hiruk) tour to openly criticise the party's system and leadership, including his rivals contesting the election. He had also publicly declared his readiness to relinquish his Cabinet position should he fail to secure the deputy president post in the PKR party elections. The 2025 PKR National Congress saw significant changes in the party's top leadership lineup, including the defeat of several incumbents. The most attention-grabbing contest was for the deputy president position, where Nurul Izzah Anwar defeated the incumbent Rafizi Ramli. The official results for the Central Leadership Council (MPP) 2025-2028, including the deputy president post, were announced by Central Election Committee Chairperson Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa around 10.30pm last night, following the opening speech of the Congress by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Nurul Izzah, former Permatang Pauh MP, garnered 9,803 votes, defeating Rafizi, who secured 3,866 votes. When approached by the media after the announcement, Rafizi declined to comment further, simply stating, "It's okay, you should ask the (new) deputy president." He appeared displeased when asked if he accepted the result of losing to the 'Puteri Reformasi,' Nurul Izzah. This morning, the PKR National Congress 2024/2025 continued with the debate session on the President's policy speech. Earlier, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the congress venue at 8.40am accompanied by Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also the party's Advisory Council Chairperson. Nurul Izzah arrived at approximately 8.20am alongside other top party leaders.
