Innovation imperative for MSME's survival, country's growth, say experts
The national workshop on 'Fostering Research and Innovation in MSMEs: The Innovation Circle Model for Transforming India into a Global Manufacturing Hub' focused on strengthening innovation ecosystems for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and underlined the urgency of constant innovation to ensure their survival and global competitiveness. The one-day workshop held at the Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE), was organised jointly by the Centre for Knowledge Ideas and Development Studies (KInDS), Kolkata, with the support of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The workshop presented the Innovation Circle (IC) Model—a strategic framework designed to institutionalise internal learning processes and technological progress within enterprises. Experts described it as a tool to help MSMEs overcome innovation-related challenges while positioning themselves as long-term players in the global value chain. Principal of VVCE, Sadashive Gowda, noted that Mysuru district alone is home to over one lakh MSMEs and stressed that exposure to such frameworks was crucial for their growth. He said the country cannot transform into a developed economy by 2047 without innovation, and pointed out that it was essential for MSMEs to be globally competitive and get into export. 'Innovation cannot be left to a few. Every enterprise, every institution must innovate to thrive and serve society. Without innovation, productivity will stagnate and India cannot emerge as a developed economy,' he added. Drawing comparisons with Singapore's transformation, he said: 'In the 1940s, Singapore was nowhere in picture but in the present times it is ranked 4th in the Global Innovation Index. This proves what consistent innovation can achieve. India too must change its mindset and embed innovation at every level if we are to realise the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047,' said Prof. Sadashive Gowda. On a positive note, he pointed out that in 2014, India ranked 80th in the Global Innovation Index. By 2024, it was ranked 39th position—a remarkable improvement driven by initiatives like Skill India and Make in India, said Prof. Sadashive Gowda. Speakers from KInDS explained that the IC Model was developed after years of research and dialogue with industry leaders, academics, and policymakers. It emphasises structured knowledge sharing, internal capacity building, and enterprise system innovation to strengthen competitiveness. The workshop sessions included discussions on strategies for enhancing learning in MSMEs, interactive dialogues on technological competitiveness, and opportunities to connect with the broader Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) ecosystem. The workshop attracted MSME representatives, academics, policymakers, and early-career innovators, who engaged in knowledge exchange and collaborative discussions. Organisers emphasised that industry–institute collaboration and support from research institutions would be essential in building a robust innovation pipeline for the future. Pradosh Nath, director, KnIDS, Praveen Arora, former advisor, DST, Government of India, and others were present.

FASTag Annual Pass Update: 200 highway trips for just INR 3,000: Everything you want to know about the yearly pass
FASTag is one of the best things that has been introduced for travellers. It is one thing that has solved a lot of issues, including toll booth traffic and making life easier for highway travellers. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), to make highways more affordable and convenient, launched an annual pass on 15 August 2025. The FASTag Annual Pass is a prepaid facility allowing private vehicle owners to take 200 toll-free trips across national highways and expressways for a fee of INR 3,000. The pass is valid for one year or 200 trips, whichever comes first. Let's have a look at some of the prime factors of FASTag Annual Pass: Eligibility The annual pass is only for private, non-commercial vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. Commercial vehicles such as taxis, buses, trucks can't use this. The pass is connected directly to the FASTag account and vehicle registration number (VRN) of the user. So it is also non-transferable. What happens if it is misused If a tag is found misused or linked only with a chassis number, it will be deactivated immediately. It is crucial to note that the pass applies only on NHAI and MoRTH-managed toll plazas. State highways, private toll roads, and parking facilities will continue to charge tolls through the standard pay-per-use FASTag system. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo How to buy and activate (Rajmarg Yatra app) Log in to the Rajmarg Yatra app or visit the NHAI official website. Choose the annual pass option Confirm vehicle details Pay INR 3,000 through UPI, debit/credit cards, or net banking Note: Wallet balances are not accepted If the vehicle's FASTag is already active and linked to a registration number, it's a quick activation. In most cases, the pass activates within two hours. It can take up to 24 hours in rare situations. Once active, users receive a confirmation SMS. Understanding 200 trips concept Every crossing at a toll plaza is counted as one trip. So, for open toll systems, every time you pass through a plaza, one trip is deducted. On closed toll roads such as certain expressways, the entire journey—from entry to exit—is treated as a single trip. The pass remains valid until either 200 trips are used or one year has passed. After that, the FASTag automatically switches back to the regular mode. How is it a money saver deal So understand this: Your one-way toll on national highways might cost between INR 70 to INR 100. In one year, you might end up paying INR 10,000–15,000 on tolls. But with the annual pass, the effective cost per crossing comes down to just INR 15– INR 20. For those who frequently commute between cities—say, from Mumbai to Surat, Delhi to Jaipur, or Bengaluru to Hyderabad—the savings can add up to INR 7,000 or more per year. This is absolutely the thing passengers wanted. With the introduction of the FASTag Annual Pass, the government aims to make highway travel smoother, cashless, and more affordable for millions of private vehicle owners.

Gold drops Rs 400 to Rs 1,00,020/10 g, silver plunges Rs 1,500
Gold prices dropped Rs 400 to Rs 1,00,020 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday due to continuous selling by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association. The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 1,00,420 per 10 grams in the previous market close. In the local market, gold of 99.5 per cent purity slipped Rs 350 to Rs 99,700 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Wednesday. It had closed at Rs 1,00,050 per 10 grams on Tuesday. "Gold prices extended losses on Wednesday as the US dollar continued to trade with minimal gains, surging to a one-week high. A decline in the geopolitical risk premium followed a positive outcome from President Donald Trump's meetings with Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders. "This development raised hopes for a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict, which appears to be the leading factor in the decline in gold prices in recent times," Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst, Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. Live Events Additionally, silver prices plunged Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,12,500 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Wednesday. The white metal had ended at Rs 1,14,000 per kg on Tuesday. In the overseas markets, spot gold was trading marginally higher at USD 3,326.04 per ounce. "Gold prices inched lower to their lowest level in nearly three weeks as the dollar strengthened, while investors awaited US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's last speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday. "Meanwhile, the US dollar index climbed to its highest level in more than a week and USD/INR fell at 87 level, weighing further on domestic prices," Manav Modi, Analyst, Precious Metal Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services , said. However, spot silver was trading at USD 37.07 per ounce, down by nearly 1 per cent in the global markets. Investors will closely watch Federal Reserve's meeting minutes to be released later in the day, which is anticipated to offer further insights into the central bank's monetary policy stance and bullion price trajectory, Modi added.
