Kanpur Jailbreak: Murder Accused From Assam Flees Prison, Massive Hunt Underway
A murder accused from Assam escaped from Kanpur district jail late on Friday night, prompting a large-scale search by prison authorities and local police. The 25-year-old, identified as Asaruddin, had been lodged in Barrack No 14 since January 14, 2024.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the escape was discovered during a routine headcount at around 10:30 pm when officials found one inmate missing. Jail superintendent BD Pandey ordered a recount of all barracks, but by 2:30 am the accused was still unaccounted for, according to an official statement. The police were informed immediately.
A joint search has been launched at important spots like Kanpur railway station, the bus stand, and nearby areas around the jail. CCTV footage from inside the prison and its surroundings has been checked, but so far there is no evidence that Asaruddin has left the jail.
Officials believe he might still be hiding somewhere within the jail compound. Police and prison staff have carefully searched places like trees, toilet ducts, and other concealed areas.
Asaruddin, who lives in Tiwari Pur, Jajmau, was arrested for allegedly killing his 25-year-old friend Ismail on January 8. Police say the murder was driven by suspicions that Asaruddin's wife was involved in an affair with the victim. Originally from Assam, Asaruddin is thought to have planned the murder beforehand.
Senior police officers, including DCP (East) Satyajit Gupta and ADCP Anjali Vishwakarma, visited the jail after the escape. They checked footage from more than 150 CCTV cameras installed under 'Operation Trinetra', but none showed the accused leaving the prison. High-powered lights were used to search sensitive parts of the jail.
Prison authorities confirmed all other prisoners are accounted for and no unauthorised persons are inside. Questioning of fellow inmates is ongoing as the search for the escaped man continues.

'We Will Erase': Israel's Ben Gvir Video Taunting Imprisoned Palestinian Leader Sparks Outrage
Barghouti, a senior member of the Palestinian Fatah party, has been in Israeli custody for over 20 years A video published by Israel's far-right national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir on Friday has caused widespread anger after showing him confronting Marwan Barghouti, the most high-profile Palestinian prisoner held by Israel. In the video shared on the social media platform X, Ben Gvir is seen surrounding Barghouti inside a prison cell along with two other people, including a guard. The minister addresses Barghouti directly in Hebrew, saying, 'You will not defeat us. Whoever harms the people of Israel, whoever kills children, whoever kills women… we will erase them." אני קורא הבוקר שכל מיני 'גורמים בכירים" ברשות לא כ"כ אהבו את מה שאמרתי לארכי מחבל מרואן ברגותי ימ"שאז אני אחזור על זה שוב ושוב בלי להתנצל – מי שיתעסק עם עם ישראל, מי שירצח לנו ילדים, מי שירצח לנו נשים, אנחנו נמחק אותו. בעזרת השם. — איתמר בן גביר (@itamarbengvir) August 15, 2025 Barghouti, a senior member of the Palestinian Fatah party, has been in Israeli custody for over 20 years after being sentenced for his involvement in attacks during the early 2000s. Israel considers him a 'terrorist" and convicted him for his role in the second intifada, or uprising, from 2000-2005. In his video, Ben Gvir's wrote, 'Anyone who messes with the people of Israel, anyone who murders our children, anyone who murders our women, we will wipe them out. With God's help." According to AFP, sources close to Ben Gvir said the meeting took place 'by chance" during an inspection visit to Ganot prison in southern Israel, but did not specify when the video was filmed. The Palestinian Authority condemned the video strongly. In a statement from its foreign ministry via the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the confrontation was called 'an unprecedented provocation." The Palestinian mission to the United Nations added that Barghouti is 'enduring extremely harsh humanitarian conditions in his solitary confinement cell," losing over half his weight due to 'deliberate medical neglect and mistreatment." Hamas political bureau member Izzat al-Rishq also spoke out, saying Ben Gvir's actions show 'there is no meaning of savagery left that has not been embodied by" the Israeli minister. Barghouti remains a highly influential figure among Palestinians and is sometimes described by supporters as the 'Palestinian Mandela." New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) A seven-year-old boy fell into an open drain while trying to catch a kite in Northeast Delhi's Welcome area on Friday evening, prompting a search and rescue operation that was later suspended due to darkness, police said. According to the police, the incident took place near Lakdi Market Puliya, where the boy, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was playing in the area. 'We received a call in the evening regarding a child falling into a drain. A team immediately reached the spot and found that the boy had slipped into the water while chasing a kite," a senior police officer said. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was alerted and a search and rescue operation was launched with the help of local divers and personnel from the Fire Department. However, the operation had to be called off late in the evening due to poor visibility. 'The search will resume early Saturday morning with additional manpower and equipment," the officer said, adding that efforts are being made to block the flow of water in certain sections of the drain to aid the search. The police said all possible assistance is being provided to the boy's family, and further investigation is underway.
