Boxer Ryosuke Nishida pulled out of title fight after suffering grotesquely swollen eye against Junto Nakatani
RYOSUKE NISHIDA was pulled out of his title fight against Junto Nakatani after suffering a grotesquely swollen eye. Nishida put his IBF bantamweight title on the line against WBA champion Nakatani in Tokyo. 4 But after just six rounds, the thudding left hands and uppercuts from Nakatani proved too much for Nishida. Halfway through the bout, Nishida's eye was swollen shut to leave the doctor with no choice but to pull him out. Three-weight champ Nakatani said: 'Ever since I was at flyweight, I wanted to unify the titles. 'Finally at bantamweight, I received my first opportunity and I am very happy with the result.' Japan's unified super-bantamweight king Naoya Inoue was ringside to watch Nakatani's dominance. And a blockbuster between the country's two biggest stars is now being touted. Nakatani said: 'I am coming, so please stick around for me." Inoue's promoter Bob Arum previously stated the fight - eyed for May 2026 - could be as big as Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford. Arum said: 'A lot of people say Nakatani is the guy that could beat Inoue. That's why it's such a big fight. That's a real, real fight. "People who really know and follow those lower weight divisions, they think that's as interesting a fight, if not more so, than Canelo and Crawford. "And it'll be the biggest fight ever in the history of Japan.' 4 4

UFC cult hero Ben Askren rushed to hospital with 'severe' health issue as wife reveals he is 'unresponsive'
Former MMA world champion and Team USA Olympian Ben Askren has been rushed to hospital and is in critical condition. Reports surfaced this weekend that Askren had been hospitalised, with some claiming the 40-year-old had been suffering from a staph infection. The news led to an outpouring of support from the MMA community, with former UFC star Chael Sonnen writing on X: 'Ben is alive and prayers are wanted. Family choosing privacy at this time.' On Saturday Askren's wife Amy posted on Facebook to clarify that her husband is unresponsive after being hospitalised following a sudden bout of pneumonia. She also asked for fans to respect the privacy of their three children. 'You may have heard that my husband Ben is going through something,' Amy posted on Facebook. 'He developed severe pneumonia which came on very suddenly. 'He's currently in the hospital and unable to respond to anything at this time. 'We welcome all prayers for healing and for peace. 'We are trying to keep life as normal as possible for our children currently and doing our best to support them thoughtfully so please refrain from discussing it with them for now.' Known for his suffocating grappling skills, Askren made his MMA debut in 2009 after a decorated collegiate wrestling career that saw him become a two-time NCAA division 1 champion. The 2008 Olympian would go on a decade-long undefeated streak inside the cage, winning world titles in Bellator and ONE and was widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the world outside the UFC. Despite a fractious relationship with UFC president Dana White, Askren would go on to make his Octagon debut in 2019 after a trade deal involving former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. After defeating Robbie Lawler in his UFC debut, Askren would go on to suffer back-to-back losses against Jorge Masvidal and Demian Maia before announcing his retirement from the sport. Despite undergoing major hip surgery after hanging up his gloves, helater returned to competition, losing to Jake Paul via first-round TKO in April 2021. Since then Askren has co-hosted the Funky and the Champ podcast alongside his Olympic team-mate Daniel Cormier.

Gran Turismo welcomes 1,500bhp Xiaomi SU7 Ultra in new update
The Nurburgring lap record holder for four-door cars is coming soon to Gran Turismo following a partnership between the long-running racing video game franchise and Chinese tech and car firm, Xiaomi. Announced at the London leg of the GT World Series e-sports championship, the new deal will see players able to digitally get behind the wheel of the 1,526bhp Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, complete with its extreme aero and up to 2.36G of braking performance. Advertisement - Article continues below If the Xiaomi name rings a bell but you're not sure of where you heard it, the Chinese tech conglomerate is best known for its range of smartphones. However, the firm made a shift in 2021 to also start producing cars, with its first model being the aforementioned SU7 saloon. Despite currently only being sold in China, the SU7 Ultra has garnered worldwide recognition for its Nurburgring lap record time of 6:46:87, something that caught the attention of Gran Turismo developers, Polyphony. Speaking to Auto Express, series founder and producer, Kazunori Yamauchi, said he was surprised by the SU7's performance when he recently tried it out on track, stating he had to 'rewire his brain' to deal with the G forces at play. 'There's not many companies in the world that seem to enjoy making cars as much as [Xiaomi],' Yamauchi-san remarked. 'I wasn't very familiar with the Xiaomi brand until now, but you can tell from the presentation, the level of knowledge they have and their curiosity that they love what they do.' The team at Gran Turismo say they're endeavouring to replicate the performance of the SU7 accurately in-game. That said, this latest addition to GT7's 536-strong car line-up is still in development, likely reaching the hands of players in the next game update which is expected to arrive in the near future. A so-called 'Vision Gran Turismo' digital concept car is also said to be on the way as an embodiment of Xiaomi's design and technical ambitions. Such a collaboration with Gran Turismo is a huge milestone for Xiaomi, which plans to enter the worldwide car market by the end of 2027. Entering the eye of European audiences through the lens of a video game like Gran Turismo should help drum up enthusiasm for the brand which, at the moment here in the UK, is a relatively unknown entity to many.
