TNT's Kenny Albert wraps up a memorable 9-month stretch with the Stanley Cup Final

Independent04-06-2025
Getting to call a Stanley Cup Final for the third time on national television would qualify as the top moment of the year for most announcers.
For TNT 's Kenny Albert, it is another accomplishment in a year that has been filled with many, especially over the past nine months.
Wednesday's Game 1 between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers will be Albert's 1,483rd call in hockey, football or baseball for a national network. He moved past his father, the legendary Marv Albert, into fourth place among North American announcers during last Wednesday's Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final between Florida and Carolina.
'To be listed along with some of the all-time greats who I watched growing up and then got to know a lot of them personally, it's a proud moment when you see that you're included in that group,' Albert said. 'My schedule definitely is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle between the various sports and networks, but very fortunate to work for and with so many great people.'
Albert surpassed the 500 games mark in both the NFL and NHL within a six-month period.
He became the first NFL play-by-play announcer to reach 500 games on one network last October when the Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Cleveland Browns in a game televised by Fox. He has been with Fox Sports since its beginning in 1994.
He surpassed 500 national NHL games on Dec. 18 when the Philadelphia Flyers faced the Detroit Red Wings on TNT. Albert has been TNT's top hockey announcer since it got the rights in 2021.
All told, Albert has done 534 NHL, 512 NFL, 421 baseball and 15 NBA games on a national broadcast or cable network. That is on top of his other duties as New York Rangers radio voice and backup for New York Knicks television games on MSG Network.
Albert's versatility to do a plethora of different sports was something he picked up from his father. Even though Marv Albert's signature sport was the NBA, he also did the NFL and NHL along with hosting the baseball pregame show during the late 1980s on NBC.
'I've always loved the variety,' Kenny Albert said.
For all of the aforementioned accomplishments, though, the highlight of Albert's year so far was calling Alex Ovechkin's 895th NHL goal on April 6 to break Wayne Gretzky's career record. Albert's call during the second period, when the Washington Capitals star set the record against the New York Islanders, relayed excitement while also mentioning the goal number and then going silent so that the crowd and scenes from the crowd could take over.
'In a championship situation or big moment, I don't usually write something out, but I do throw some words around in my mind just to be ready,' Albert said. "I was thinking something with his nickname, the Great Eight, the great Gretzky. When he tied the record, Joe Beninati (the Capitals TV announcer) used something similar to that, so I wanted to shift over to something else and not use some of the same words he did.
'When it happened, it just came out naturally. I mentioned No. 895 and then I just got out of the way. It was very important after the call to just lay out and let the production folks do their thing. Let the pictures and sound tell the story.'
According to TV database research compiled by Un/Necessary Sports Research, the late Bob Cole, who called the games for CBC's 'Hockey Night in Canada' for 50 years, leads the way at 1,722 (all hockey) games; followed by Dick Stockton, who did basketball, baseball and football for CBS and Fox, with 1,544; and Canadian play-by-play announcer Chris Cuthbert with 1,539. Cuthbert, the current lead voice for 'Hockey Night in Canada' will surpass Stockton if the Stanley Cup Final goes six games.
Kevin Harlan is sixth at 1,477 and should surpass Marv Albert (1,481) for fifth during Week 5 of the upcoming NFL season.
This will be the 11th Stanley Cup Final for Albert, including eight on radio, but the first where he has called a rematch from the previous year. This is the first final rematch since the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009 and the second over the past 40 years.
'It has a chance to be one of the all-time great championship series," Albert said. "These same teams played a scintillating seven-game series last June. Star power on both sides. Edmonton attempting to win Canada's first Cup since 1993. Florida looking to repeat. Can Connor McDavid match Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby and win his first Stanley Cup against the team that beat his club in the Cup Final the year before? I can't wait.'

Disney adults are now GLAMPING on the Orlando theme park property… and the price tag is staggering

If you asked a Disney adult how much they love the theme parks, they would probably say that they would live there. And, as it turns out, they kind of can. Because The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort are now available at the park's famous campground. Dubbed Disney's most natural setting, Fort Wilderness stretches across 750 acres of pine and cypress trees. It's been around since 1971 and offers everything from tent sites to RV hookups. The new cabins feature air conditioning, soft beds and Disney-themed drape. The amenities also include floor-to-ceiling windows, vaulted ceilings, plush queen beds, full kitchen, and even sleeping-bag-style blankets on the bunk beds. There are also walk-in showers and sleek wood finishes picked out by Disney Imagineers. The 'glamping' aspect of these cabins isn't just reflected in the design - because it also translates to the price. The new Fort Wilderness cabins are part of the Disney Vacation Club, but if you're not a member, you can still book one for $469 a night on average. There are more than 350 of these luxe cabins in the works. However, the glamping experience doesn't just stop inside the cabin. Each night, guests can catch a campfire singalong (complete with a Chip and Dale meet-and-greet), roast s'mores using Disney-branded kits, and watch a movie under the stars. For those who want to lean into other camp-like activities, there is also the opportunity to go fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, and archery - although these experiences are not included in the nightly rate. In terms of food, the campground has grocery 'trading posts,' fast-casual dining, and the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue dinner theater, which just celebrated its 50th birthday. Each cabin sleeps up to six people and even allows pets. The Donnelly's - a family that vlogs about their life on YouTube to their one million followers - recently stayed at the cabin and documented their experience. The self-proclaimed 'Disney nerds and fanatics' enjoyed arts and crafts, riding around the campground in a golf cart, and spending quality family time together. The family of four even ventured outside of the cabins to check out the trading post, where they bought 'tiny foods.' Like many other Disney families that choose to go glamping, the Donnelly's enjoyed the quaint experience being only a short stop away from their favorite theme park.

Vice President Vance reacts to his depiction on South Park

JD Vance reacted on X to a South Park episode that parodied the administration, stating, 'Well, I've finally made it.' The episode depicted a mini-version of the vice president serving the president, who was shown in bed with Satan. It also featured a parody of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, known for shooting her dog, and Cartman imitating a conservative activist. The plot involved Mr Mackey joining Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), leading to a raid on heaven and his invitation to Mar-a-Lago. The show's mockery follows a previous exchange where South Park sarcastically responded to a DHS post using their image and a White House statement questioning the show's relevance.

Unearthed photos show Brad Pitt's treasured memories of his late mom, who was cut off from her six grandchildren by Angelina

Brad Pitt's estrangement from Angelina Jolie has had more than one unfortunate consequence: his six children were not only cut out of his life but his mother's as well, Daily Mail can reveal. Pitt 's children hadn't seen their doting grandmother Jane Etta Pitt – whose died on Tuesday at the age of 84 – for nine years. Sources close to Pitt described the situation as 'gut-wrenching' to Daily Mail and blamed Jolie's intransigence for the lack of contact. 'The most gut-wrenching part is that Angelina kept the kids away from his parents, from their own grandparents,' one insider said. 'The question Brad has – that we all have – is Angelina where is your heart? Are you going to remain bitter for the rest of your life? 'It's one thing if she wants no contact, but what about the kids?' Pitt, 66, was known to be close to his mother who made a smattering of red-carpet appearances by her famous son's side. The retired school counselor raised the megastar in the modest town of Springfield, Missouri, alongside his younger siblings Doug and Julie. Jane Etta was known to be proud of her son's acting career and was supportive of it from the start, even before he got his big break in the 1991 blockbuster Thelma and Louise. Previously unseen Daily Mail photos show the veteran star hugging his mother while dressed as a woman during his 1980s college days where the acting bug first bit. The image was taken while he was studying for a journalism degree at the University of Missouri and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity which often staged shows. Not long after the photo was taken, he moved to Los Angeles in search of fame and a film career – both of which he achieved in spectacular style. Both Pitt's father Bill and mother had been cut off from Shiloh, 19, twins Vivienne and Knox, 17, and their adopted siblings Maddox, 24, Pax, 21 and Zahara, 20 for nine years But despite his success, Pitt has never forgotten his midwestern roots and in 2019, was spotted back in Springfield hugging his mom as dad Bill looked on. Sadly, Bill, like Jane, has also been cut off from Shiloh, 19, twins Vivienne and Knox, 17, and their adopted siblings Maddox, 24, Pax, 21 and Zahara, 20. None of them are currently in contact with Pitt and all but Vivienne and Knox have dropped his surname. Pax is thought to be particularly resistant to contact with his dad and famously made headlines in November 2023 when a 2020 Instagram rant in which he called Pitt a 'world class a**hole' who makes his four youngest children 'tremble in fear' was exposed by Daily Mail. The source, referring to Pitt's participation in an Alcoholics Anonymous program, added: 'Angelina insists that it's all Brad's fault. Well, he's working the Twelve Step program. 'He's done his eight and nine steps. 'Step eight made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. 'Step nine made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. It's an ongoing practice and he's working the program.' Although his efforts haven't yet borne fruit, a separate source told Daily Mail that Pitt is determined to win his children back and wants nothing more than for them to be back in his life and that of his family. 'Brad wants nothing more than to have resolution with his kids and to restore a relationship with them,' the source explained. 'If they aren't willing to meet him halfway, that's one thing but he said his own family, especially his parents, and now his dad, shouldn't have to suffer from something they had no part of. 'He said Angelina should have been encouraging the kids to maintain a relationship with their grandparents all along. 'Hopefully this is a wakeup call. Life is too short and too precious.' Another source said Brad wants his mother to be remembered for who she was: 'a mother to Brad, Julie and Doug, and a grandmother to all their children.' 'Of course it was a shame and hugely emotional that she was unable to see Brad's kids for years, but she also understood what was happening and never took it out on Angelina or her grandchildren as she knew they might not want to talk to her because of the situation with their father.
