A GARBAGE truck driver in Bengaluru city, India, was shocked to find a woman's body, believed to be a murder victim, dumped in his lorry, Makkal Osai reported.
The gruesome discovery happened several days ago when the municipal garbage collection truck driver was getting ready to start his shift in the morning.
He had cleaned out the vehicle the night before, which is why he was initially annoyed to find that someone had dumped a large sack in the truck.
His annoyance soon turned to horror when he saw a human head sticking out from the sack.
The driver immediately called the police who then found that the woman had been raped, killed and dumped in the compactor truck. Her hands were also tied.
Based on CCTV recordings, the authorities identified her as a 38-year-old widow named Pushpa who lived in a nearby town.
Apparently, her live-in partner had been arrested after he was caught on CCTV dumping the body after transporting it on his motorbike.
He was believed to have strangled her after an argument.

UN urges Sri Lanka to prosecute war crimes under new government

GENEVA: The United Nations human rights chief has called on Sri Lanka's new government to end impunity for war crimes and human rights abuses. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk described the current moment as a 'historic opportunity' for the country to reform. 'Today, an opportunity presents itself for Sri Lanka to break from the past, with the leadership pledging a fresh direction on long-standing issues,' Turk said in a report to the Human Rights Council. The report noted President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's public recognition of the suffering endured by all communities during decades of conflict. 'It is important to build on this momentum and to translate it into tangible results for accountability in the form of truth-telling, justice, reparations, and non-recurrence, as necessary to end impunity and provide for healing and closure.' Turk emphasised the need for Sri Lanka to formally acknowledge past violations, including those committed during the civil war that ended in 2009. He urged international support for Colombo's efforts but warned of universal jurisdiction prosecutions if Sri Lanka fails to deliver justice. UN reports allege Sri Lankan troops killed at least 40,000 Tamil civilians in the war's final months, a claim repeatedly denied by successive governments. The conflict, which lasted 37 years, claimed over 100,000 lives before the Tamil Tigers' defeat in 2009. Sri Lanka has consistently rejected independent investigations into alleged war crimes by both government forces and Tamil rebels. During his visit last month, Turk met Dissanayake and civil society representatives while touring war-affected regions. 'As I witnessed first-hand during my visit to Sri Lanka, the pain and suffering of victims remains palpable, and their demands for truth and justice must be addressed.' The report welcomed pledges to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act and investigate high-profile cases, including the 2009 murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge. It also highlighted the lingering effects of Sri Lanka's 2022 economic crisis, with poverty rates nearly doubling and child malnutrition rising sharply. – AFP

Crackdown on illegal Sabah tourism operations linked to Chinese investors

Tiong joins enforcement officers on a sea patrol in Tawau to inspect boats for valid permits and safety compliance. — Picture from Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing's Facebook KOTA KINABALU (Aug 13): Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called for an investigation into alleged illegal tourism operations in Sabah, warning they endanger visitors and damage Malaysia's reputation. These businesses, often appearing locally owned, are allegedly controlled by Chinese investors. Tiong personally led a two-day enforcement operation in Tawau involving his ministry's Licensing and Enforcement Division, Immigration, police and other agencies. Raids uncovered unlicensed water chalets, illegal homestays on agricultural land and unauthorised aquaculture farms. The team inspected 30 tour buses/vehicles, 15 tourism premises, 40 boats and four jetties, issuing summonses for nine offences. Specific findings included: Tour groups and buses violating regulations at Tawau Airport; vessels exceeding passenger limits, operating without permits, and lacking documentation during sea patrols; companies registered under local names but effectively run by Chinese investors engaged in unlawful activities. 'These unlicensed operations pose serious safety and management risks, with the potential for tragedies,' Tiong stated in a statement on Wednesday. He urged local authorities to immediately investigate suspicious operations and shut down unlicensed businesses. While welcoming foreign investment, he stressed it must be legal and fully compliant. 'Welcoming investors does not mean turning a blind eye. Whether from China or anywhere else, those involved in illegal activities … will not be tolerated,' he declared. Tiong warned that operators found guilty of breaches face permanent licence revocation. He also cautioned local operators against leasing or lending their licences for profit. 'Malaysia's tourism industry is vital … Its safety reputation and image must be preserved without compromise,' Tiong said, reaffirming his ministry's commitment to strict enforcement and tourist safety.

My son was dragged, stabbed with syringe in attack, says Rafizi

Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli said the attack occurred at about 1.45pm when his son and wife were getting into their car at a shopping mall in Putrajaya. PETALING JAYA : Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli said his son was dragged and stabbed with a syringe by an assailant at a Putrajaya shopping mall this afternoon. According to Rafizi, the attack occurred at about 1.45pm as his son and wife were getting into the car. He said that checks of CCTV footage showed that two men, dressed in black with helmets fully covering their faces, had followed his wife's car on a motorcycle before the incident. 'They had waited earlier and rushed to attack my son at the right moment,' he said in a statement. 'My son was immediately taken to Universiti Putra Malaysia Hospital for treatment.' Rafizi said he and his family have provided statements to the authorities, and he also expressed his gratitude to the police and hospital staff for their assistance. The Pandan MP described the attack as unprecedented in his political career, and said he believed it was a warning for him not to speak out on certain issues. 'God willing, while I will take follow-up measures to enhance security, I will not yield to any threats and will continue to perform my duties as usual,' he said. Malaysiakini earlier reported that Rafizi's son was attacked in a mall car park in Putrajaya, with Sepang police confirming the incident. In a statement later, youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh expressed her sympathies to Rafizi and his family, and called for the authorities to investigate the matter immediately and ensure public safety. 'No one, let alone a child, should be a victim of violence. Such things should not happen in a peaceful country like Malaysia with laws and efficient enforcement. 'I pray for safety and healing for Rafizi's son and for his family to be given strength against these trials,' she said.
