‘All a dream': Tassie man pockets enormous $70m Oz Lotto jackpot win

West Australian04-06-2025
A Tasmanian man has claimed the $70m Oz Lotto jackpot – the second-largest jackpot prize in the lottery's history. The winning numbers for Tuesday night's draw 1633 were 44, 34, 45, 1, 46, 25, and 21, while the supplementary numbers were 9, 14, and 16.
The man purchased the sole winning ticket online, and despite claiming to have checked his Oz Lotteries account more than 15 times since 11pm on Tuesday – and going into work as normal on Wednesday – he had no idea that he had taken home the winning prize.
The Tasmanian man told The Lott that he was set to retire soon and purchase a home with his partner. The The Lott team called him on Wednesday morning to confirm his massive win. 'Oh wow. I don't have to come to work anymore, it's -1C here at the moment where I am working,' he told The Lott. 'I might just go and hand my resignation in right now.'
The man, the sole Division 1 winner, admitted that he couldn't quite believe the news. 'I have hardly slept all night,' he told them. 'I was wondering if I was dreaming, and I was going to wake up and someone was going to say, it was all just a dream.' The man said he was hoping to spend part of his $70m winnings on a home with his partner after experiencing a 'rough couple of years'. 'Buying a dream home with my partner and helping my family out,' he said. 'Oh, this is brilliant, absolutely brilliant … I've had a (rough) couple of years.
'I am just getting back on my feet and I still have a mortgage when everyone else (my age) is about to retire. 'I have been saying I will have to work until I am 70 but not now'The next major jackpot will take place on Thursday, with a Division 1 Powerball prize of $50m.

Major change coming to Lotto tickets

Aussies are set for a slight surprise the next time they enter the weekly lotto draw, after the company behind Powerball and the country's other weekly lotto draws announced it would be hiking the ticket entry prices for games by 20c. The Lottery Corporation announced the 'refresh' to the Powerball game in its full-year results, posted on Wednesday. The company reported revenue of $3.7bn for the 2025 financial year - down 6.2 per cent from the previous financial year - and a net profit of $365m. Compared to the 2024 financial year, that figure is down 11.7 per cent. Sue van der Merwe, The Lottery Corporation's managing director and chief executive, said the company's lotteries division - which includes Keno, Powerball and Saturday Lotto, among others - delivered a 'resilient' underlying performance. This included three $100m Powerball jackpots and a single $100m Oz Lotto jackpot over the financial year. The price of a Powerball ticket will jump from $1.20 to $1.40, as part of a 'refresh' flagged by the Lottery Corporation. Supplied Credit: Supplied She flagged changes to the Powerball game in November 2025, where the entry price per game would rise from $1.20 to $1.40, would result in 'increases to prize offers and retailer commissions'. 'The planned changes... are designed to reinforce its position as our premium jackpot game,' Ms van der Merwe said. The company's operating expenses increased by 4.3 per cent due in part to an increase in technology costs. Changes to the Saturday Lotto game have already come into place - with the Division Prize offer increasing from $5m to $6m, plus an additional 10c cost rise per game. 'In line with long-term customer demand, underlying participation remained healthy across the portfolio as customers sought out value amid economic challenges,' Ms van der Merwe continued. The company, which runs the Powerball and many of the other weekly lotto draws in Australia, posted a 11.7 per cent decline in their net profit on Wednesday. Supplied Credit: Supplied 'This was reflected in relatively stable like-for-like turnover levels across our top three games - with Oz Lotto slightly up, and Powerball and Saturday Lotto slightly down.' Keno turnover was up 4.6 per cent, but digital turnover declined 18.6 per cent. This was attributed to the company's decision to introduce mandatory spend limits for online Keno players. Ms van der Merwe said the coming financial year would have the full-year benefit of the price changes flagged for Saturday Lotto and Powerball games. 'The company expects continued growth in digital share, enhanced personalisation and further productivity gains to support margin expansion and long-term value creation,' she said.

Powerball jackpot soars to mind-boggling amount

Powerball has soared to $30 million after there was no winning entry in Thursday night's draw. The winning numbers for Powerball draw #1526 were 33, 5, 12, 14, 19, 32, and 1, with the Powerball number 10. No one took home the division one prize of $20m, meaning the jackpot has increased to a whopping $30m for next Thursday's Powerball. Despite no one claiming the largest prize, three division two winners took home $168,353 each. A total of 51 players won division three, each pocketing $12,312, and 1031 players won $529 in division four. On Thursday, members of The Lott pounded the pavement in Sydney to try and track down the mysterious Division One winner of the $100m Powerball earlier this year. The elusive player had purchased the winning ticket at Bondi Junction Newsagency for Powerball draw 1217, which was drawn on June 12. In NSW, ticketholders have six years to claim their winnings before it expires. In an effort to inspire the mysterious winner to check their wallet, a band of runners from The Lott conducted a 'memory jog' across Bondi. 'It has now been 63 days since the elusive ticket holder won this massive $100m prize and throughout that time we have been eagerly waiting to unite the winner with their Powerball windfall,' The Lott spokesman Matt Hart said. 'Each day during the past nine weeks, we've been asking ourselves 'is today the day the winning ticket is presented?'' Entries to Thursday's Powerball draw 1527 close at 7.30pm AEST, with the draw shortly after.
