Did you know that behind the incredible career of legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt, there was a personal story filled with heartbreak and rumours? Many believe that his alleged closeness with co-star Waheeda Rehman played a big role in breaking his marriage with his wife, Geeta Dutt. Well, the rumours about Dutt's life are back in the spotlight as part of his centenary celebrations. To mark the occasion, some of his most iconic films have been restored for today's audiences and are being screened in more than 250 cinemas across India.
Guru Dutt is remembered as one of the greatest filmmakers of Indian cinema. In a short span of career wherein he helmed just eight Hindi films, the filmmaker created works that eventually earned cult status. Take Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool, for example.
Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt's Marriage
As for his personal life, he was married to popular playback singer Geeta Roy (later Geeta Dutt). The duo tied the knot on May 26, 1953, after being engaged for three years. Together, they welcomed three children — Tarun, Arun and Nina. However, their marriage soon hit a rough patch and the reason? Their different personalities, hectic work schedules and Guru Dutt's tendency to prioritise work above everything.
Waheeda Rehman Enters The Picture
What further added to the troubles was Dutt's growing closeness to Waheeda Rehman. The two worked together in several unforgettable films including Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and Chaudhvin Ka Chand. Their chemistry on-screen was loved by audiences, and off-screen, Waheeda openly considered him her mentor. Their love and admiration for each other were quite evident which played a major role in drifting them apart and further contributed to their broken marriage.
According to Guru Dutt's sister, Lalitha Lajmi, Geeta was 'suspicious" of almost every actress he worked with, as reported by Etimes. Lalitha said that Geeta reportedly kept a close eye on Dutt and often had a clash with him over his female co-stars. Frequent arguments became part of their married life, and Waheeda's presence only deepened the rift.
Waheeda Rehman On Guru Dutt: 'Work Came First'
In an interaction with author Nasreen Munni Kabir for Conversations with Waheeda Rehman, the veteran actress has shared that for Guru Dutt, work always came first, even before his wife and children.
Despite the rumours, neither Guru Dutt nor Waheeda ever spoke publicly about their rumoured romantic relationship. After the unfortunate demise of the legendary actor and filmmaker, Waheeda eventually married actor Shashi Rekhi aka Kamaljeet.

Deepika Padukone steps back from acting role in ‘The Intern' remake to focus on producing: Report

Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has decided to step away from acting in the Indian remake of 'The Intern', choosing instead to focus solely on her role as a producer. According to a report by Mid-Day, a source close to the project shared that Padukone will no longer play the female lead in the film. 'This time, Deepika will step away from acting in the film to serve solely as a producer, overseeing the creative and logistical reboot. A new leading lady is being cast to play the part she was once slated to perform,' the source said. Padukone, who has previously co-produced films under her banner KA Productions, is reportedly using this opportunity to widen her creative role in filmmaking. ''The Intern' is the first of five projects she plans to mount in the coming year. She is looking to tell stories that are globally relevant,' the source added. The Intern, a remake of the 2015 Hollywood film starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, was first announced in 2020. Deepika was to play the role made famous by Hathaway, while the late Rishi Kapoor had been cast in De Niro's role. Following Kapoor's passing, Amitabh Bachchan joined the project as the senior intern. Despite the strong buzz, the film has seen several delays. The Covid-19 pandemic, Padukone's maternity break, and scheduling issues have pushed the project back multiple times.
