Atlanta to Get Its First Chai Cafe

Atlanta to Get Its First Chai Cafe

Eater6 days ago
When you walk into an Indian home, instead of hello, you may be greeted with one simple question: Chai?
Tea time is an integral part of many Indian households, and no one knows that better than the Chai Box creator, Monica Sunny, who makes aromatic cups of meditative chai on her Instagram while running the country's forefront chai brand. The Atlanta resident is now set to open the city's first chai cafe in Upper Westside in the former Doughnut Dollies space on Howell Mill. It will open late this year.
'Chai time has always been sacred in our home — an invitation to slow down, and connect,' says Sunny, whose chai was one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2021. 'You can get a chai latte at just about every coffee shop; you can order chai at most Indian restaurants. But there's not a single place here in Atlanta that's fully dedicated to chai, the way there are chai wallas and street-side tea stalls all over India. Opening this cafe gives us a platform to bring that experience to life.'
Expect Sunny's popular chai blends sourced from India at the cafe, including rose, masala, and kadak varieties, in addition to Indian filter coffee, seasonal drinks, and chai-inspired desserts (think chai waffles). The cafe will also include a retail section to take chai blends and other local goods home.
Sunny has had a meteoric rise since opening her company in 2016 out of Marietta. Not only did it land on Oprah's Favorite Things list, but her viral chai concentrate was picked up by 21 Costco locations. Doraville's soju distillery, Minhwa Spirits, also collaborated with Sunny to create a chai gin called Queen Huh last year.
'Opening a chai cafe has always been a dream and part of my vision for the Chai Box,' says Sunny. 'I wanted to create a space where people could experience chai the way I grew up drinking it.' See More: Atlanta Restaurant Openings

Anand says Indo-Pacific strategy will have economic focus but maintain values

OTTAWA - Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says the economy is becoming the primary focus of Canada's relationships in the Indo-Pacific — a shift that appears linked to Canada's recent moves to overcome its security dispute with India. Anand was in Japan and Malaysia this week for her first trip to the region since taking over as foreign minister in May. Her message coming out of that trip was that Canada's foreign policy is shifting — though not abandoning — the priorities set by the previous Liberal government of former prime minister Justin Trudeau. 'It is important for us to revisit our policy — not only in the Indo-Pacific but generally speaking — to ensure that we are focusing not only on the values that we have historically adhered to,' Anand said Thursday in a teleconference from Malaysia. 'Foreign policy is an extension of domestic interest and particularly domestic economic interests. This is a time when the global economy is under stress.' The Trudeau government put language on environmental protection, labour standards and gender equality in its trade agreements. Goldy Hyder, head of the Business Council of Canada, said that made Canada appear 'a bit preachy' to other countries. He said Canada has to be respectful in the way it stands up for democratic values. A focus on the economy is quickly becoming a defining trait of the government of Prime Minister Mark Carney, a former central banker who is intent on building up Canada's domestic capacity and reshaping its trade and security plans to rely less on the United States. Carney has been mostly focused on Europe so far; he has visited the continent three times since March. Anand's visit this week 'sets the stage' for Carney's planned visits this fall to the Association of South East Asian Nations leaders' summit in Malaysia and the APEC forum in South Korea, said Vina Nadjibulla, research vice-president for the Asia Pacific Foundation. Anand visited Tokyo to sign an information-sharing agreement that could lead to defence procurement deals, before heading to Malaysia for a meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN. Her visit also comes as Canada tries to restore ties with India after two years of diplomatic chill following the 2023 shooting death of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar near Vancouver — a crime Ottawa linked to agents of the Indian government. The RCMP said last year it had evidence of New Delhi playing a role in acts of homicide, coercion and extortion targeting multiple Sikh-Canadians. Canada subsequently expelled six senior Indian diplomats; New Delhi expelled six Canadian diplomats in response. India claims Canada is enabling a separatist movement that calls for a Sikh homeland — Khalistan — to be carved out of India, and calls that a violation of its sovereignty. Carney began to thaw the relationship in June. He invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit in Alberta and the two leaders agreed to reinstate their high commissioners. The two countries are also starting security talks. As the world's most populous country, India is seen as a critical partner as Carney pushes to disentangle Canada from its heavy reliance on trade with the U.S. The two countries have engaged in on-and-off negotiations on a trade deal since 2010, with frequent pauses — including Ottawa's suspension of talks after the Nijjar assassination. Hyder said India's corporate sector has been urging Canadian corporations to continue expanding trade in spite of the tensions between Ottawa and New Delhi. 'One day this is all going to be resolved, and we don't want to have lost all that time,' he said. He said the reduced number of Canadian diplomats has made it more challenging for members of his council to engage in India, because there are fewer trade commissioners in India to help Canadians connect companies with contacts and opportunities on the ground. Hyder, who spoke just before leaving for a fact-finding mission to India, said the appointment of high commissioners will set the tone for eventual trade talks. He said a trade deal would be helpful but is not 'a precondition' for boosting trade, and suggested Ottawa should focus on scaling up the roads and ports needed to meet Asia's demand for Canadian commodities. Vijay Sappani, a fellow with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, said an India trade deal could come quite soon. 'If we put in the right efforts on our end, I feel like we could probably get a free-trade agreement done before the end of this year, if not (the first quarter) of next year,' said Sappani. 'There is no Indo-Pacific without India, and if we want to play in the global markets, where we've been kind of shunned … then we need to step up to the plate.' Sappani said Ottawa should seek assurances from India that it will never play a role in violence in Canada. In turn, he said, Ottawa could commit to not having politicians show up at any event where there are displays commemorating those who took part in violence in support of the Khalistan movement. 'That is the biggest thing that we Canadians can do to stop some level of irritants within the Indian side, and trade definitely will come on back on the table,' he said. Anand would not say how soon Canada and India could appoint top envoys, or start trade talks. 'We will take the relationship with India one step at a time,' she said Thursday. 'That timeline will be steady, not immediate.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 12, 2025.

13 Iconic Celebrity Wedding Dresses Of Past 25 Years

It's wedding season, and that means it's time to revisit the most iconic, beautiful, and glamorous celebrity wedding dresses of the past 25 years. Whether you're looking for inspo or just want to admire some gorgeous gowns, enjoy! Kate Middleton's Grace Kelly-inspired gown for her 2011 wedding to Prince William: In 2021, Lily Collins married director Charlie McDowell in, dare I say, one of the most beloved wedding dresses of the century. She worked with Ralph Lauren to create the gown and hooded lace cloak, and shared in an Instagram post that the design was her "ultimate dream combination of Western Americana and British Victorian." When Priyanka Chopra married Nick Jonas in 2018, the pair celebrated over multiple days and multiple ceremonies. For their western ceremony, she wore a lace Ralph Lauren dress that was hand-beaded and hand-embroidered and featured a stunning 75-foot veil. And for their Hindu ceremony, Priyanka stunned in a lehenga in the traditional red from Indian designer Sabyasachi. If you were on the internet in any capacity when the couple tied the knot in 2018, there was no escaping discussion of their gorgeous wedding. It was one for the books! Issa Rae surprised fans with her "impromptu" wedding to Louis Diame in 2021. The pair got married in France, and her dress was to die for. Louis's Dolce & Gabbana suit looks incredible, as well! Another fantastic cape moment: Solange Knowles' jumpsuit for her New Orleans wedding to Alan Ferguson. If there's anything cooler than the bride and groom arriving by bike, it's this cape. Kiera Knightley married musician James Righton in a small, private ceremony in the South of France. She wore a tulle Chanel dress, and because she is the iconic Kiera Knightley, she has stunned in the dress at multiple events since then. Sustainable queen! Julianne Moore looked fabulous in a non-traditional look for her wedding to Bart Freundlich in 2003. She kept it low-key but nonetheless radiant in a lavender silk slip dress from Prada, matching her husband's lavender dress shirt. In 2023, Anya Taylor-Joy and musician Malcolm McRae celebrated their marriage in Venice, Italy, for which she wore this beautiful Dior gown. Their large celebration might have been in Venice, but the two had already secretly eloped in New Orleans some months before. Anya shared gorgeous pictures of the New Orleans affair on her Instagram. In 2002, wearing the most early-aughts fairytale look I've seen yet, Gwen Stefani married her now ex-husband Gavin in a glorious pink and white ombré gown from Dior. Instead of having a new gown designed for her 2020 marriage to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Beatrice borrowed and modified an old dress from her grandmother, none other than Queen Elizabeth herself. Beatrice also got to borrow her grandma's diamond tiara, no biggie. Queen Elizabeth originally wore the Norman Hartnell gown to the 1962 premiere of Lawrence of Arabia. The dress was refitted, hemmed, and cap sleeves were added, making it the perfect look for Beatrice's big day. This one might be my favorite on the list. Keyword might. Check out more pictures on the Royal Family's Instagram account! Emma Stone first met her now-husband Dave McCary when she hosted Saturday Night Live in 2016. Their wedding was pretty private, but we did get to admire her reception dress when she re-wore it at the 2022 Met Gala. When Hailey and Justin Bieber got married in their 2019 ceremony, she wore a gown designed by the late Virgil Abloh featuring the veil that took Instagram by storm. "TILL DEATH DO US PART," the veil read. Miranda Kerr looked like a princess in Dior at her 2017 wedding to Evan Spiegel — which is no surprise, considering she told Vogue she was inspired by Grace Kelley's gown. For more pictures, check out Miranda's Instagram. And finally, a special mention to honor an icon: although their wedding was more than 25 years ago, I would be remiss not to mention the black gown Sarah Jessica Parker wore to wed Matthew Broderick in their 1997 ceremony. Icon. Which of these celeb wedding dresses is your favorite? Share your thoughts in the comments!
