The essential guide to summer sandals

The essential guide to summer sandals

Telegraph6 hours ago

Wearing sandals in summer is no novel concept, but the seasonal shift to something open-toe can still feel daunting to the most confident dresser. Nevertheless, great sandals are the foundation of a summer wardrobe, so finding the right pair is essential for getting through the warmer months in style.
Celebrities are always a reliable source of inspiration. Zoë Kravitz favours a flip-flop-style sandal, as does model Alex Consani, who was pictured at Cannes teaming them with a tailored white jacket. Also at the film festival was Elle Fanning, who showcased the wooden platform clog trend.
With open-toe season on the horizon, we've created the ultimate guide to sandals, whatever your style and wardrobe.
The strappy sandal
A perennial; there has never been a time when strappy sandals haven't been on trend. Kate Moss lived in them in the 1990s and Sarah Jessica Parker wore countless pairs on Sex and the City. Russell & Bromley creative director, Daniel Beardsworth-Shaw particularly likes those with sculptural metallic accents. 'There's something so refined in their simplicity,' he says. 'What I love most is how these styles strike that balance between form and function – they're visually effortless but thoughtfully designed.'
The suede sandal
If you've already fallen for suede bags and jackets, you'll love the suede sandal – this timeless, expensive-looking material elevates even the simplest footwear. Beardsworth-Shaw loves a suede gladiator: 'It's about subtle transitions – choosing pieces that are considered and crafted enough to hold their own in any setting.' Pair it with a linen skirt for a boho look, or use them to elevate a pair of barrel jeans. Just remember to check the forecast for rain before stepping out – this is fairweather footwear.
The colourful mule
The classic mule has had a complete makeover this season, and it's never been more versatile or fun. Wear them to the office by day, or for dinner by night, either way, they provide comfort and sophistication in equal measure. This style is a great way to add colour to your look, says Antoine Bolze, co-founder of French footwear brand Bobbies: 'Our Kelly style reimagines the classic mule, adding a gorgeous pop of blue,' he says. 'Mules are such an iconic 1990s style, I'm so happy that they're getting the recognition they deserve this summer.'
The open-toe clog
We have Chloé to thank for the current upgrade on the style – Chemena Kamali's wooden, open-toe iterations have a Seventies feel to them, and are loved by celebrities, including Sienna Miller – less of a chore shoe and more one you want to be seen in. It's casual, but with a sense of style about it.
It hasn't always been that way: ' Wooden sole clogs were previously a style that only a few people dared to wear and mostly at home or in the garden,' says Christina Martini, co-founder and designer of Ancient Greek Sandals. 'There has been a definite shift over the past few years and this season the trend has exploded. Practical, comfortable and cool, I believe they are here to stay. I love to wear them with socks, or, when the sun comes out, I pair them with a maxi skirt or long chiffon Chloe dress.'
The day-to-night sandal
In 2025, embellishment comes in a sleek package, as demonstrated on the Tory Burch catwalk. Ring-adorned sandals can be viewed as an extension of your jewellery, and are an easy choice for effortless day-to-night looks. The Amanu Style 35 is a case in point: 'With the asymmetrical strap and 'barely there' look, this style was designed to feel minimal and elegant by day and elevated with the gold hardware for a night out,' says the label's founder, Anita Patrickson. 'Its clean lines and unique shape make it a timeless investment.'

Prince William beams as he joins Prince Albert of Monaco at forum to help the world's oceans

Prince William has joined Prince Albert of Monaco as he touched down in the south of France to attend a forum in a bid to help the world's oceans. The Prince of Wales, 42, attended the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF) at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Sunday. Dressed in a smart navy suit and tie, William appeared in great spirits as he greeted Albert, 67, and shook his hand. During his visit, he is set to give a 'landmark speech' to call for more to be done to protect the oceans. 'The Prince of Wales feels passionately about action being taken to protect and restore our oceans,' a Kensington Palace spokesperson told the BBC. 'Tomorrow, he's going to be calling for swift, immediate global action. The time is now.' The Forum is organised by the Government of Monaco, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, and the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, with support from France and Costa Rica. It brings together business leaders, government representatives, multilateral institutions and stakeholders committed to restoring the health of the oceans. The event will focus on ocean preservation and aims to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and regenerative blue economy. During his visit, William will meet with finalists, winners and key partners of The Earthshot Prize, who will showcase innovative solutions that have the power to reverse damage caused to the oceans and preserve it for future generations. He has previously worked with Albert after joining forces at the Earthshot Summit in 2023. In January, both royals attended the Aston Villa v Monaco Champions League football match - though were supporting opposing sides. The Prince of Wales is also marking World Oceans Day this year with an interview with Sir David Attenborough ahead of the release of his new documentary, Ocean with David Attenborough. Kensington Palace has released a new film of Prince William and the 99-year-old broadcaster and environmental activist, which sees the pair discussing the current state of the oceans. David's new documentary is set to release on Sunday, which is World Oceans Day. The film has been created to shine a light on the damage humankind has wreaked on the ocean, as well as the opportunities we have to heal it. In their conversation, William and David spoke of the legendary biologist's work in ocean exploration, as well as reasons to remain optimistic for ocean recovery. At the start of the short film, David recalled the first time he ever put on a diving helmet - and nearly drowned as it filled with water. 'I suddenly felt water coming up,' he said, gesturing around his chin to show where the water level rose to inside the helmet when he first went underwater. 'I thought, 'This can't be right'. And by the time it got to about here,' he said, gesturing to his nose, 'I thought, 'I'm sure this is not right'. 'And of course if you've got this thing screwed on top of you, you can't breathe. You can't even make yourself heard, you know. Get it off me!' Yesterday, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco were joined by their twin children, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella in welcoming France 's President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron on their state visit to the country on Saturday 7 June. The trip was historic for more than one reason. It marks the first visit to Monaco by a French president since François Mitterrand made his journey there in 1984. It was also the first time that 10-year-old royal twins had played a prominent, public role in a state visit. Jacques and Gabriella stood alongside their parents while awaiting the Macrons' arrival at the Prince's Palace in Monaco. The young prince, dressed in a smart navy suit and a printed tie, appeared serious as he stood between his parents, while Gabriella wore a cream-coloured dress with cap sleeves and matching Mary Jane shoes while carrying a small bouquet of flowers. Gabriella was tasked with presenting the bouquet to Brigitte, who gave her a kiss on the cheek in thanks. Albert donned a slightly brighter blue suit compared to his son's, paired with a baby blue tie. Charlene, who is usually known for her glamorous sense of style, cut a more casual figure but was nonetheless chic in her Dior jacket and white straight-cut tailored trousers. The royal family posed for photographs with Macron and Brigitte as the couple's two-day visit got underway. In a Facebook post detailing part of the Macrons' itinerary, the Prince's Palace of Monaco said Charlene took Brigitte for a private stroll around the palace gardens, where they 'shared a moment of sincere exchange, marked by deep kindness and shared commitments to youth'. The two women were joined by Jacques and Gabrielle, who brought their 'relaxed and lively presence' to the scenic walk and reinforced 'direct, human ties that unite France and Monaco from generation to generation', according to the palace. Macron and Brigitte also received traditional military honours from Prince Albert and Princess Charlene in a ceremony at the palace.

Alejandro Garnacho enjoys holiday in Rome after Asia tour nightmare... with Man United star's future at the club in doubt after spat with Ruben Amorim

Alejandro Garnacho didn't exactly have the season he will have been hoping for in 2024-25, and the Manchester United star has been quick to get away from it all in his summer off and enjoy some well-earned rest. The forward came into the campaign under Erik ten Hag as one of the squad's untouchables, having played a key role in their FA Cup win, and looked set to push on under the Dutchman. However, just last month he ended the season with at least one foot out the door after failing to break into Ruben Amorim's side, before social media proved to come back and bite him, leaving his position at Old Trafford seemingly untenable. Things went from bad to worse even after the debilitating Europa League final defeat by Tottenham as Garnacho appeared to push a fan in the streets when approached while on post-season tour in Malaysia. But now, with his future up in the air at Old Trafford, Garnacho and his partner Eva Garcia, as well as their young child, has sought some respite in the Italian capital on a short holiday. Garcia posted a number of pictures on her Instagram account of herself in Rome, as well as posing for selfies with Garnacho and a lovely picture of all three members of their young family. However the Argentina international will know that he faces a crucial summer in terms of his immediate future, but perhaps also his next 10 years in the game, with the wrong move - should he leave - potentially seeing him become another in the long line of players to fade away. He is undoubtedly one of the most promising young attackers, at least in the Premier League, and already has a Puskas Award to his name for a stunning bicycle kick against Everton, but seemingly has had issues with his temperament. Mail Sport previously revealed Garnacho was brutally warned by Ruben Amorim that he needs to 'pray' he can find a new club in a dressing room spat in front of the United squad. Tensions climaxed when Garnacho hit out at Amorim after being given less than 20 minutes off the bench in the Red Devils' Europa League final defeat by Tottenham last month. The youngster said in Bilbao: 'Until we reached the final, I played every round. And I played 20 minutes today - I don't know. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next.' With Garnacho's departure all but confirmed in an official club statement, potential suitors are now circling to secure the 20-year-old's talents. Three Premier League clubs are said to be 'very keen' on Garnacho, who sees remaining in the English top flight a serious option, according to Fabrizio Romano. As for other European clubs, Bayer Leverkusen are understood to be interested, along with a host of Italian clubs.

At the time of her split with Chris, the pair appeared to have parted ways amicably, with her agent telling OK! Magazine: 'I can confirm they have split and Annabel wishes Chris all the best.' Chris later told The Sun: 'I'm in a good place. I always struggle a bit when it's fresh out of a relationship because everything feels different. 'But I'm in the gym, I'm keeping myself busy with work'. Golfer Annabel's baby news comes just days after Chris and US singer and TV star JoJo Siwa confirmed their relationship after meeting in the Celebrity Big Brother house. Fans of the fly-on-the-wall reality show had watched the pair become close in the spy house, creating an intense bond. In an interview with Capital Radio, JoJo confirmed that she and Chris have made their relationship official, and she's started calling him her boyfriend. Speaking in a video for the channel's new series Capital Buzz, the dancer admitted that she's had to explain her viral 'Dream guest on my podcast' moment to Chris. She then added: 'I'm sure it's no secret to people, I am in a lovely relationship with a sweet boy named Christopher Hughes.' In an earlier interview with The Guardian, JoJo gushed about her blossoming romance with Chris. She said: 'It's not platonic any more, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way.' Chris and JoJo have already met each other's parents, and she admitted he's become 'best friends' with her dad. Earlier this week the loved-up couple were pictured holding hands and display public affection during a visit to the Cotswolds. A source previously told that Chris also seems to have received the seal of approval from JoJo's parents, Jessalynn and Tom, who are not believed to have any qualms with the ten-year age gap. 'Her parents are all in for JoJo's happiness and see Chris as someone very special and are eager to see where it all goes,' the insider said. 'They fully support their daughter's decision. JoJo has grown up before our eyes, and will jump into things with both feet, so her friends aren't surprised that she is acting this way with Chris. 'No one is talking about the age gap or if they are rushing into things. Everyone just wants to see JoJo happy.' Last Sunday fans of JoJo and Chris were sent into a frenzy when he shared a racy bedroom snap of them both and they lay in bed together.
