Kerala government's Bakrid holiday shift sparks political row; IUML accuses Left of communal agenda
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government's decision to change Bakrid holiday triggered a political row in the state on Friday with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) accusing it of attempting to implement "communal agenda and fascism" in the state.
Originally Friday (June 6) was marked as holiday for Bakrid.
However, following the reports that the festival would be celebrated on Saturday across the state, on Thursday, the Kerala government announced that Saturday, June 7, will be a public holiday for Bakrid.
As per the change, government also declared that June 6 (Friday) would be a regular working day.
Officials, in a statement, said the change was made to ensure the holiday aligns with the actual date of celebration observed by the people.
However, IUML and a few Muslim outfits criticised the government's move to change the holiday.
Responding to these criticisms, government on Thursday night, announced that all educational institutions, including profesional colleges, would be closed on Friday.
However, it failed to pacify the ruffled feathers.
IUML, the second largest coalition partner in the Congress-led UDF, said though Friday was declared a public holiday earlier, the Left government cancelled it for no reason.
The government's act was amounted to provoke the minority community, senior IUML leader P M A Salam charged.
"The Left (government) is attempting to implement more communalism and fascism than the BJP and the Sangh Parivar in the state," he alleged in a TV channel.

Gujarat Congress general secy held over post on Opration Sindoor
The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary, Rajesh Soni, was on Friday arrested by the Gujarat Police Cyber Crime Cell over an alleged objectionable social media post on Operation Sindoor, officials said even as GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil criticised the move. According to police officials, Soni allegedly made disparaging statements about the Armed Forces in his post. Cyber Crime Cell Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Sharma told The Indian Express, 'Soni was booked under BNS Sections 152 (endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India) and 353 (making, publishing or circulating statements that could lead to public mischief) for demoralising the army.' SP Sharma confirmed that earlier in the day, Soni was detained from his home in Ahmedabad and subsequently placed under arrest. He was produced before court, which then sent him to judicial custody. Demanding 'immediate bail' from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for 'social leader and political activist' Rajeshbhai T Soni, GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil said, 'Last night, just like a terrorist is being caught, Rajeshbhai T Soni was arrested by Gandhinagar Cyber Crime. If we look at the post, the only thing that is clear is that the soldiers of our brave army should get credit for the bravery they have shown and the money from the public treasury should not be used for publicity and … political gains should not be taken in the name of Operation Sindoor.' Soni had uploaded around three to four posts on social media platforms on Operation Sindoor. 'This has been in the minds of all the citizens of the country that the credit for the brave work done by our army should go to them. Seeing the way the government is doing publicity, they have expressed their concern that the soldiers will not get credit. If they only raise their voice for the army or express their concern that they will not get credit, how can it be a crime?' Gohil said. He further said, 'The Supreme Court recently took note of the government's policy of filing cases through misuse of the Gujarat Police and severely criticised the police. I hope the police use wisdom…Rajeshbhai Soni is not a terrorist… he should be released immediately. The entire country and Congress are on the side of the army.' Gohil also put out his statement on the microblogging site X, saying: 'The whole country and the Congress are in favor of the army. If it is a crime to take the side of the army only, then all the Congress workers including me will post and raise their voices in favor of the army. if they have courage, then the government should put all of us in jail.' Gohil's post tagging Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, Gujarat Police stated, 'When late Manmohan Singh ji was the Prime Minister, many BJP leaders and supporters used to write false things at will, but the Congress government at the Centre or the states did not try to curb the fundamental freedom of expression or register a case' Gohil demanded immediate bail for the political functionary.

Cong & BJP have teamed up against AAP: Sond
Ludhiana: AAP minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond criticised the BJP and Congress for their "alliance" against AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora in Ludhiana West. "BJP has conceded defeat and is urging voters not to support AAP. Their fear of Sanjeev Arora's clean image is evident," Sond said. He also slammed the "unethical tactics" of the Congress and BJP, which, he claimed, were aimed at diverting attention from Bharat Bhushan Ashu's "corruption scandals." He urged residents to choose honesty and development by electing Sanjeev Arora. In a scathing attack on the Congress and Ashu, AAP leader Neel Garg accused them of engaging in "sympathy-driven theatrics." Garg claimed that Ashu was embroiled in serious corruption charges involving crores and was attempting to manipulate public sentiment instead of focusing on genuine issues. "People of Ludhiana have outrightly rejected Bharat Bhushan Ashu, as they remember his arrogant behaviour during his tenure as MLA and minister. Even prominent Congress leaders such as Sukhjinder Randhawa, Raja Warring, and Pratap Bajwa have distanced themselves from Ashu and this election. It is evident that the Congress party, under the control of its Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, is attempting to script baseless sympathy narratives, as they lack credibility and trust among the people," Garg said. He alleged that Ashu colluded with a Vigilance SSP, a known associate from his ministerial tenure, to fabricate a summons and gain sympathy. "This gimmick was a desperate attempt to sway voters in Ludhiana West, but the truth has now come to light. People of Ludhiana see through these antics and are firmly supporting AAP's clean and development-oriented politics," he added. Alleging desperation in the AAP camp, Garg said, "Unable to match AAP's people-centric governance, Congress is stooping to new lows. Their baseless antics are a clear indication of their panic as they face inevitable defeat." Calling for an issue-based election, Garg declared, "Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Congress must stop creating fabricated narratives. People of Ludhiana West will give them a befitting response on June 19 by voting for AAP and reaffirming their trust in honest governance and development."
