Row erupts as KBC hosts officers Sofiya Qureshi, Vyomika Singh after Operation Sindoor

Hindustan Times19 hours ago
Amitabh Bachchan will host decorated officers from the Indian Armed Forces in the Independence Day special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) season 17. In a promo shared by the channel, Amitabh Bachchan is seen welcoming Colonel Sofiya Qureshi (Indian Army), Wing Commander Vyomika Singh (Indian Air Force) and Commander Prerna Deosthalee (Indian Navy). Sofiya Qureshi, Vyomika Singh share Operation Sindoor story on KBC(YouTube/@KBCIndia)
The special episode will feature the officers recounting key moments from India's Operation Sindoor conducted against terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
The appearance of the three officers, however, has sparked a controversy, with many netizens calling it a "PR" stunt and 'political mileage'.
Both Colonel Sofiya and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh held press briefings while the mission was ongoing.
The makers recently released a teaser of the episode, set to air on August 15, showing KBC host Amitabh Bachchan giving the officers a grand welcome.
'This is just unbelievable. Operation Sindoor heroes appearing on national TV show KBC Just because one 'nationalist' party wants to milk some votes?' one user posted on X.
"Have you ever seen anything like this after a military operation in any serious country? How is this even allowed for someone in service? The current regime is shamelessly using our forces for its petty politics and hyper-nationalism," another user said.
'Our Army was sacrosanct, above politics, beyond PR. Today, Modi govt parades serving soldiers on shows like KBC for image building. Even our Army has been made a political tool for Modi's PR. Our forces are to defend the nation, not a politician's brand,' a user posted on X.
A user also questioned if armed forces protocol allows sending officers on reality shows like KBC.
"The Indian Armed Forces have some protocol, some dignity and huge respect. Politicians are ruining it for their personal benefit. That's shameful," he said.
What the regulations say:
Uniform use in social and cultural settings: Uniforms are generally discouraged in social venues such as restaurants, hotels, or while shopping — except when attending official social functions such as those held in the Officers' Mess.
Headgear (caps) must not be worn inside such venues, including at social gatherings (explicitly listed alongside church services and formal meetings).
Uniforms may be worn at social events within the Officers' Mess, including dances or gatherings organised by the military.

Asad Owaisi criticises meat ban on I-Day

Hyderabad: Hyderabad MP and AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has criticised the decision to close slaughterhouses and meat shops on Independence Day, August 15, calling the move by municipal corporations unconstitutional. Owaisi said that various municipal corporations across India, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), ordering the closure of slaughterhouses and meat shops on India's Independence Day is callous and unconstitutional. He questioned the logic behind the meat ban and celebrating Independence Day. On social media, Owaisi posted, 'Many municipal corporations across India seem to have ordered that slaughterhouses and meat shops should be closed on 15th August. Unfortunately, GHMC has also made a similar order. This is callous and unconstitutional.' He continued, 'What's the connection between eating meat and celebrating Independence Day? 99% of Telangana's people eat meat. These meat bans violate people's right to liberty, privacy, livelihood, culture, nutrition & religion.' The GHMC has issued orders for the closure of cattle slaughterhouses and retail beef shops on August 15 and August 16 on account of Independence Day and Janmashtami, respectively. The Municipal Corporation issued the order under section 533 (b) of the GHMC Act, 1955. The GHMC Commissioner sent the order to the Police Commissioners of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda. Asad Owaisi called on civic authorities to reconsider such decisions, highlighting the impact on the livelihoods of those dependent on the meat trade and emphasising the need to uphold personal freedoms and cultural diversity in the country.

How many Pakistani jets India shot down in Op Sindoor? IAF confirmed 5, experts say 'evidence' of more

International military aviation analyst and historian Tom Cooper backed Indian Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh's recent assertion that India shot down five Pakistani air force jets during Operation Sindoor. While Pakistan continues to deny the claims, Tom Cooper, a renowned Austria-based aerial warfare expert, has said that what ACM Singh noted was just a 'confirmation of something that was more or less known since May'. Earlier this week, Singh maintained that India's S-400 systems struck at least five Pakistani jets and one big airborne early warning aircraft. Pakistan denied Singh's claim. However, during an interview with ANI, Cooper noted that Indian firepower remained dominated during the four-day military escalation between India and Pakistan. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We have seen evidence of not only five but even more Pakistani aircraft being shot down. We have also seen evidence for even more Pakistani aircraft being destroyed on the ground. But there was no official confirmation from the IAF, not even from the government of India. Therefore, this is a nice confirmation for something that was assessed already back in May,' Cooper said in an interview with ANI. A world record was made Cooper identified the Pakistani early warning and control aircraft as a Saab 2000. The Austrian aviation expert went on to endorse Singh's claim that the successful strike from a range of 300 km was a world record. 'It is the longest range confirmed shoot-down by a surface-to-air missile. This is a historic achievement,' he said, lauding the extraordinary feat of the IAF, mentioning that the other instance of such an attack was recorded in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where the weapon system was shot down at a distance of 200 km. 'This is a significant fact because we have seen IAF deploying its S-400 surface-to-air missile system very close to the border to Pakistan, so close that it was actually firing missiles from within the range of Pakistani army's artillery, which meant if it would stay, its presence of the firing unit in question would have been detected by Pakistanis too early, Pakistanis could have shelled the area in question, hit and destroyed this firing unit. So it was quite a risky operation, actually,' he told ANI. It is pertinent to note that Tom Cooper is not the only expert to endorse Singh's assessment. Earlier, well-known military strategist John Spencer maintained that Operation Sindoor marked India's decisive victory. With inputs from ANI.
