The fourth age of Bazball: Fewer risks and more sledging
Their approach this summer has been notably different. They have not been flawless but their best cricket has shown greater maturity — what has been dubbed 'Bazball with brains'. The run chase at Headingley was measured; the best of the batting and bowling at Lord's on a difficult surface, pragmatic.
Their strike rate of 49.01 in the previous match, the third Test at Lord's, was their slowest since Stokes took over as captain three years ago, and the victory was secured by drying India's runscoring to a trickle — a far cry from the first Bazball summer of 2022, when batsmen were told to embrace the danger and bowlers urged to think of every ball as a wicket-taking opportunity, and not worry about economy rates.

Bundee Aki and Andrew Porter start in Irish-heavy Lions side for second Test
Andy Farrell has brought Bundee Aki, Ollie Chessum and Andrew Porter into the British and Irish Lions side with nine Irishmen starting the second Test in Melbourne. Aki and Huw Jones unite in midfield with Sione Tuipulotu, who had hoped to feature in his home city, left out entirely after scoring in the opening clash at Suncorp Stadium last Saturday. The Lions, 1-0 up and hoping to seal the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground this weekend, are without Joe McCarthy after his foot injury in Brisbane, while Owen Farrell is named on the bench and set to make a first Test appearance since the 2023 Rugby World Cup. James Ryan, Jac Morgan and Blair Kinghorn also come on to the bench after starting the midweek win over the First Nations & Pasifika XV. 'We have put ourselves in a good position after the first Test, but we know there will be a massive reaction from this Wallaby team,' head coach Farrell said. 'Everyone saw the quality they have in Brisbane and we know we will have to be a lot better than we were last week. 'The opportunity to play in front of 100,000 supporters at the MCG, one of the world's most iconic stadiums, is what makes Lions tours unique and special. And we know our Lions supporters will get behind the team on Saturday and create a fantastic atmosphere.' While Chessum is promoted to partner captain and compatriot Maro Itoje at lock, the back row is unchanged having impressed in Brisbane. Jamison Gibson-Park and Finn Russell continue in the halves, and James Lowe, Tommy Freeman and Hugo Keenan again combine in the back three. Farrell's inclusion on the bench comes at the expense of fellow Englishman Marcus Smith, who passed a head injury assessment late on in the 24-19 win over the First Nations & Pasifika side on Tuesday. Ben Earl also drops out of the matchday squad. The Lions remain unbeaten since arriving in Australia. British and Irish Lions XV to face Australia at the MCG (11am BST, Saturday 26 July): 1 Andrew Porter, 2 Dan Sheehan, 3 Tadhg Furlong; 4 Maro Itoje (capt.), 5 Ollie Chessum; 6 Tadhg Beirne, 7 Tom Curry, 8 Jack Conan; 9 Jamison Gibson-Park, 10 Finn Russell; 11 James Lowe, 12 Bundee Aki, 13 Huw Jones, 14 Tommy Freeman; 15 Hugo Keenan.

Owen Farrell named on bench for Lions' second Test against Wallabies
Owen Farrell has been named on the bench for the British and Irish Lions' attempt at completing a series victory over Australia in Melbourne on Saturday. Four days after captaining the Lions in the midweek victory over the First Nations and Pasifika, Farrell will make his first Test appearance since the 2023 World Cup as fly-half and inside centre cover. Head coach Andy Farrell has made three changes to the starting line-up that won the first Test 27-19, including the removal of Sione Tuipulotu, who is jettisoned from the matchday 23 completely with Bundee Aki taking his place in the number 12 jersey. Joe McCarthy has lost his battle with the foot condition plantar fasciitis so Ollie Chessum is drafted into the second row and there is an adjustment at loosehead prop where Andrew Porter is preferred ahead of Ellis Genge.

Wallabies boosted by returning Rob Valetini and Will Skelton for second Lions Test
Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has recalled hulking forwards Rob Valetini and Will Skelton to add much-needed muscle for the must-win second Test against the British & Irish Lions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday. Australia were easily overpowered in the first half of the opening Test in Brisbane last week when, despite showing improvement in the second half, they could not make up for their slow start and finished 27-19 losers. In front of an expected crowd of more than 80,000 at the MCG, Valetini will start at blindside flanker after overcoming a calf injury in a huge boost for the hosts. The return of the John Eales medallist pushes Nick Champion de Crespigny out of the side after his debut last week. Skelton's recovery from his own calf injury forces Jeremy Williams onto the bench. The only other change to the starting XV is David Porecki – who suffered a head knock against Fiji two weeks ago – replacing Matt Faessler at hooker, while backrower Langi Gleeson also returns from injury and replaces Tom Hooper on the bench. After the team's training session in Melbourne's Lakeside Stadium on Thursday, Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said the time spent in camp this week has been valuable as the team chases the quick improvement needed. 'The squad has recovered well after a very physical first Test and the week's preparation here in Melbourne has allowed us a bit more time together,' he said. 'We took some confidence from the second half last week, but we know we'll need to improve further against a Lions team that will bring plenty of fire to the contest on Saturday night.' Sign up to The Breakdown The latest rugby union news and analysis, plus all the week's action reviewed after newsletter promotion No 10 Tom Lynagh and scrumhalf Jake Gordon have been retained, despite facing intense pressure from a ferocious Lions defence last week. Some had expected Tate McDermott to be given a chance in the No 9 jersey given his Reds connection to Lynagh and his impressive performance off the bench last week, but Schmidt has retained the 26-year-old as an interchange weapon. Melbourne product Harry Potter retains his place on the wing, while Len Ikitau and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii remain Australia's centre pairing as the side aims to keep the series alive for a decider in Sydney the following week.
