The Sporting News predicts Alabama's 2025 season, CFP fate in Year 2 under Kalen DeBoer
The 2025 college football season is just over two months away, and The Sporting News is among several national media outlets making its prediction for the Alabama Crimson Tide in Year 2 under coach Kalen DeBoer. Alabama finished 9-4 last season, hardly the worst start for a coach tasked with enormous expectations following the retirement of Nick Saban. But a stunning loss to Vanderbilt after the Crimson Tide's rollercoaster win over Georgia, followed by a pair of ugly losses down the stretch to Oklahoma and a Michigan team that was a shell of its 2023 self, left something of a sour taste to close 2024. DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb will have to break in a new quarterback in Ty Simpson, but Alabama has a lot of talent returning in 2025 -- particularly in the wide receiver room with Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard leading the way, and in the secondary with cornerbacks Zabien Brown and Domani Jackson, and safeties Keon Sabb and Bray Hubbard. The Crimson Tide also have an incoming freshman class that ranks in the top five in recruiting. Earlier this week, the Sporting News made its 12-team playoff predictions for the 2025 season. In the outlet's preseason projections, Alabama makes the College Football Playoff as the No. 7 seed and hosts a first-round playoff game against the Miami Hurricanes at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Per Bender: "Kalen DeBoer gets the Crimson Tide back in the College Football Playoff in his second season, and the Hurricanes are the at-large bid for the ACC. That means Carson Beck delivers as the new starting quarterback, and Mario Cristobal avoids a season-altering upset." A return trip to Tuscaloosa would mark Beck's second game in Bryant-Denny Stadium in as many seasons. As Georgia's starter in 2023 and '24, Beck went 0-2 against Alabama, including last year's 41-34 thriller on Sept. 28 that was clinched by a game-saving interception from the freshman Brown. For its part, Miami looked to be a lock for the ACC Championship Game last year under Heisman Trophy finalist and No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Cam Ward, but the Hurricanes lost its regular season finale in an upset at Syracuse. The Sporting News sees Alabama taking on defending national champion Ohio State in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2026. That means a matchup against former 5-star Crimson Tide QB commit Julian Sayin. "The Buckeyes are in the Rose Bowl for the second straight season as the Big Ten champion, and Alabama would be a formidable matchup. Julian Sayin -- who decommitted from Alabama after Nick Saban retired -- would be the center of attention in this matchup assuming he wins the starting job for the Buckeyes." Bender sees Alabama falling to the Buckeyes in Pasadena as part of his overall prediction that Ryan Day's team will return to the national championship game for a second year in a row; this time in a matchup against Texas at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Jan. 20. Alabama football schedule 2025 Alabama opens the 2025 season against Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Aug. 30. Kickoff was announced earlier this spring for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC. Here's the rest of the 2025 Alabama football schedule with updated start times. All times Central. Cowboys Trade Pitch For Najee Harris Draws Strong Insider Reaction
Cowboys Trade Pitch For Najee Harris Draws Strong Insider Reaction originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - Najee Smith to the Dallas Cowboys ... again? This is The Rumor that Will Not Die. Advertisement Even before Dallas said goodbye to running backs Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott, rumors suggest the team might pursue Steelers' former first-round pick Najee Harris in free agency, often calling him a "perfect'' match in Dallas. At that time, our Cowboys insider Mike Fisher had a firm reaction. "My first response to these sort of hyperbolic reports is that there is no 'perfect' signing,'' Fish says. "Lawrence Taylor wouldn't be 'perfect.' Michael Jordan wouldn't be 'perfect.' And Najee Harris isn't LT or MJ. "Najee (is 28). That's not 'perfect.' He's sort of a plodder, rather than being explosive. That's not 'perfect.' And the Cowboys will need to ask themselves this: 'If Najee is so 'perfect' in 2025 free agency, amid speculation he might get $10 million a year ... why did his own Steelers team decline a fifth-year option on his for 2025 at $6.3 million? Advertisement "If Najee is so 'perfect,' why didn't the Steelers do that deal?'' Now fast-forward to a time when we are weeks away from training camp. The Cowboys had a chance to sign Harris, who offered up a strong 2024 campaign, helping Pittsburgh secure a playoff berth while contending for the AFC North crown; he's a perennial 1,000-yard guy, no doubt. But Dallas passed here, opting instead to sign Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders while drafting Jaydon Blue. But here we go again ... Bleacher Report wants Dallas to trade for Najee! "Teams in need of running back help would at least be wise to call about Harris' availability," B/R wrote. "While he was never a high-level starter with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was a dependable high-volume back who topped 1,000 rushing yards in all four campaigns. Advertisement "Dallas should consider adding Harris as a high-floor option in its backfield." We're lost. Let's go back to Fish, who reflect on this new attempt to connect Najee to Dallas ... "Najee Harris signed a one-year $5.25 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, who I assume are happy with that as they work him in combo with rookie Omarion Hampton,'' Fish says. "It's a month before camp; why are they giving up on Najee now? What happened in L.A.? What changed? "And in Dallas? Again, the Cowboys didn't want to sign him for $5 mil when he was a free agent, but now they should both pay him and give up a pick for him? It defies logic.'' Advertisement We think, Cowboys Nation, you can take that as a "no.'' Cowboys Can't Waste 'Blow It Up' Plan Under New Coach
Cowboys Can't Waste 'Blow It Up' Plan Under New Coach originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys know that what transpired last year can't happen again, and certainly not after the positive offseason we've seen from the franchise. Advertisement With Brian Schottenheimer now in the big chair, he has overseen significant changes both on and off the field, thanks to a solid free agency and draft haul, coupled with several coaching changes. All of that was part of what dissected last offseason as a "Blow It Up'' plan. That was about a combination of inactivity and savings when it came to roster-building going into 2024 ... and major changes - including the dismissal of coach Mike McCarthy - at the end of the 7-10 campaign. But "Blow It Up'' is over. Now it is time to recover from the pain and to capitalize. And the post-McCarthy vibes are good at The Star. Advertisement Training camp is under a month away, and we'll get to see how long those good vibes last with the staff able to get a proper evaluation of every player on the roster. Such has been the level of positivity this offseason that some are hopeful Schotty can lead this franchise back to the playoffs —and possibly beyond. Will it happen? Who knows, but when you have true belief, anything is possible. However, for that to happen, the Cowboys have to show they are better than they were a year ago, and for Fox Sports' Ben Arthur, when naming one word to describe the offseason, "rebound." "With quarterback Dak Prescott back healthy, the Cowboys will look to return to the playoffs in 2025," Arthur writes. "They traded for receiver George Pickens and a pair of former first-round defenders (linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr., cornerback Kaiir Elam) to give their team a boost under new coach Brian Schottenheimer." Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian SchottenheimerKirby Lee-Imagn Images There are many unknowns about the Cowboys under Schottenheimer, with numerous new faces, a different coaching approach, and adjustments to the system. Advertisement However, there is also a benefit to change. With a revamped run game and offensive line, and with Dak Prescott now having two genuine receiving weapons, fans are no longer looking at Dallas as dead in the water. Granted, we are in June, so we can't be steadfast in our convictions just yet. But things are nicely poised for the Cowboys to "rebound" under Schottenheimer.
