Jaishankar said Taiwan part of China, says Beijing; no change in ties with Taipei: Delhi
Beijing said Tuesday External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that 'Taiwan is part of China' and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval conveyed that India 'consistently adhered to the one-China policy'. Responding to these remarks in the Chinese readout of Wang's meetings in New Delhi, official sources said there has been 'no change' in India's position on Taiwan and its ties with Taipei are focused on economy, technology and culture. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in an English version of the readout on Jaishankar's meeting with Wang Monday, quoted the External Affairs Minister as having said: 'Stable, cooperative, and forward-looking India-China relations serve the interests of both countries. Taiwan is part of China.' And, in its readout of the meeting between Doval and Wang, China quoted Doval saying 'it is necessary to enhance understanding, deepen trust, and strengthen cooperation, as this is crucial for the well-being of the peoples of both countries and world peace and development. India has consistently adhered to the one-China policy.' India has always maintained the One-China policy – which means Taiwan is part of China. India and Taiwan have their representative offices in each other's country, focusing on trade and cultural activities. And now, a technology component has been added to it. India does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan yet because it follows the One-China policy. However, during then Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to India in December 2010, India did not mention support for the One-China policy in the joint communique. That has been the template for the last 15 years. Responding to the Chinese readout Tuesday, sources said, 'There is no change in our position on Taiwan. We stressed that like the rest of the world, India has a relationship with Taiwan that focuses on economic, technology and cultural ties. We intend to continue it.' In an oblique reference to US President Donald Trump's moves on tariffs, the Chinese readout of the meeting between Jaishankar and Wang said, 'Wang Yi stated that in today's world, unprecedented changes are unfolding at a faster pace, unilateralism and bullying acts are rampant, and free trade and the international order face severe challenges.' 'On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, humanity has reached a critical crossroads in determining the direction of the future. As the two largest developing countries with a combined population of more than 2.8 billion, China and India should demonstrate a sense of global responsibility, act as major countries, set an example for developing countries in pursuit of strength through unity, and contribute to advancing a multipolar world and greater democracy in international relations,' it said. According to the Chinese readout, Wang also said that the 'successful meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan (in Russia last October) has provided guidance for the resumption and a new start for China-India relations. Both sides have been earnestly implementing the common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries, gradually resuming exchanges and dialogues at various levels, maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas, and enabling Indian pilgrims to resume their pilgrimages to the sacred mountains and lakes in China's Xizang' – a reference to the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. 'China-India relations are showing a positive trend toward returning to the main course of cooperation. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and India. Both sides should earnestly draw lessons from the past 75 years, form a correct strategic perception, view each other as partners and opportunities rather than rivals or threats, invest their valuable resources in development and revitalization, and explore right ways for neighboring major countries to get along with each other, which are characterized by mutual respect and trust, peaceful coexistence, pursuit of common development, and win-win cooperation,' it said. Rising H-1B Uncertainty: 45% Of Indian Professionals In US Would Return Home, 24% Fear Pay Cuts, Deportation Risks Grow Amid Trump's Visa Shakeup
New York: Indians working in the United States on H-1B or L-1 visas are reconsidering their long-term plans in the wake of rising uncertainties. A recent Blind poll, conducted anonymously for verified professionals, found that 45% would return to India if job loss forced them to leave the United States. Another 26% said they would move to a different country, while 29% remain undecided. Pay cuts and quality-of-life concerns top the list of worries for those contemplating a return. About 25% cited lower pay as a deterrent, 24% mentioned a dip in living standards, 13% highlighted cultural or family adjustments and 10% feared fewer job opportunities. When asked if they would apply for a U.S. work visa again, only 35% said yes. The majority (65%) were either unsure (27%) or negative (38%), indicating a growing shift in perception about the benefits of American work visas. Personal experiences feed this sentiment. Over one-third of respondents (35%) said they or someone they knew had to leave the United States following a job loss, often facing deportation risks during the short grace period. Deportation Notices Before Grace Period Ends H-1B visa holders reported a rising trend of deportation notices being issued even before the 60-day grace period expires. One in six respondents said they or someone they knew had received a Notice to Appear (NTA) within weeks of losing a job. This could result in a permanent ban from the United States. 'Multiple cases where NTAs were sent in 2 weeks. Immigration lawyers now advise leaving as soon as possible after [the] job ends otherwise you risk a permanent ban from the US,' wrote one Meta user on Blind. Normally, H-1B workers get 60 days to find a new employer or switch visa status, but reports since mid-2025 suggest notices arriving as early as two weeks into the grace period. Trump's Comments Stir Debate President Donald Trump recently urged U.S. companies to 'stop hiring in India'. The Blind survey found 63% of U.S.-based professionals felt this could benefit their companies, while 69% of India-based respondents believed it would harm their firms. The survey was conducted from July 28 to August 8, 2025. Potential Visa Rule Changes On August 8, the US Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OMB) cleared a proposal to change H-1B visa rules. Titled 'Weighted Selection Process for Registrants and Petitioners Seeking to File Cap-Subject H-1B Petitions', it is now with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for public comment. While the text of the proposed rule has not yet been released, the proposal could potentially replace the current random H-1B lottery system with a wage-based selection process. The measure revives Trump's first-term effort to prioritise higher salaries. In January 2021, near the end of Trump's first term, he attempted to implement a rule that tied the H-1B lottery selection to wage level. This new rule will likely resemble the 2021 version. At present, H-1B selection is a lottery. Under a wage-based system, the USCIS would rank applications by offered salaries, starting from the highest until the annual cap is reached. Luck takes a back seat. The H-1B programme allows 85,000 visas annually: 65,000 for general applicants and 20,000 for holders of US master's degrees or higher. If applications exceed the cap, a computerised lottery determines selection. Tech firms rely heavily on this programme. If the rule mirrors the 2021 attempt, cap-subject H-1B petitions for entry-level positions would have almost no chance of selection. This would significantly affect foreign graduates seeking work in the United States.

1 2 Hyderabad: The Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO ) is gearing up to develop one of the tallest rockets ever built by man -- a nextgen launch vehicle as high as a 40-storey building (over 120 meters) to put a 75,000 kg (75-tonne) payload in low Earth orbit (LEO), ISRO chairman V Narayanan said here on Tuesday. "Do you know what the capacity of a rocket (launcher) is? The first launcher, which was built by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Ji, had a 17-tonne lift-off mass and was capable of placing 35 kg in LEO," Narayanan said at the 84th convocation ceremony of Osmania University (OU) in Hyderabad. "Fifty years ago, we were in the phase of launching the first satellite. Now, we are shoulder to shoulder with every developed nation," Narayanan said. On India's ambitions to put man on the moon, the ISRO chief said that, as suggested by PM Modi during his meeting with Shubhanshu Shukla, ISRO is in the process of developing a pool of 40 to 50 astronauts for India's future space missions. This even as ISRO is already in advanced stages of its Gaganyaan human space flight mission, where Indians astronauts will travel to space on an Indian rocket for the first time. "The first unmanned mission is planned very shortly... PM recently rolled out the broad envelope of where our space programme has to reach in the coming years. The Chandrayaan-4 programme is already approved and this mission shall be planned as a sample-return mission," Narayanan added. "An Indian has to land on the moon and return safely by a fully indigenous moon mission by 2040," he added. By 2035, a 52-tonne mass space station - Bhartiya Anthariksha Station (BAS) - is going to be built by the ISRO, reiterated Narayanan, adding that the initial modules in space for the same shall start as early as 2027. He also revealed key events that unfolded prior to Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's successful journey to the International Space Station (ISS) and back, which was the first step in the ambitious Gaganyaan mission , and said that had the rocket taken off as per the initial schedule it would have been a "catastrophic failure". While the original launch of SpaceX Falcon rocket was planned for June 11, he said a day prior to the launch, a team led by him, that was camping at the Kennedy Space Centre, detected a leak in the rocket, pushing the launch date to June 25. "When there was a discussion, 14 questions were asked but none of them were answered satisfactorily, including where the leak was. Finally, we put up a demand on behalf of the Indian govt and the leakage was fixed. Based on the insistence of Indians, the Indian education system, and ISRO training, the fault was corrected. Today we have accomplished a safe mission, not only for Shubhanshu Shukla but also for three other international astronauts," he explained. These key missions apart, ISRO is also working on the Venus Orbiter Mission (VOM) (Shukrayaan) in which a spacecraft will be sent to study Venus. ISRO also plans to launch the Technology Demonstration Satellite (TDS) and GSAT-7R, an Indian military communication satellite specifically designed for the Indian Navy to replace the existing GSAT-7 (Rukmini) satellite, this year among other initiatives. He said India's premier space agency is also working on executing a significant mission in the next three months — of placing a 6,500 kg communication satellite built by the US, into orbit using an Indian rocket. Other projects in the pipeline include the Navigation with India Constellation system (NAVIC) satellite and the N1 rocket. The ISRO Chief also said that the NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite, which was launched on July 30 this year to monitor the changes in Earth's ecosystems, is working "fantastically well". "In fact, this morning, we saw that the first product has come from the satellite, which is going to be useful for the entire global community," he added. The agency is also developing a G20 satellite for the G20 countries, which aims to help the countries of the global south. Pointing out that India has 55 satellites in orbit right now, Narayanan said the number will increase threefold in another three to four years.
