The East India Company established the British rule in India, and ruled the Indian subcontinent and other major parts of the world for nearly centuries, expanding the British Empire to the point where its was said that the sun never sets upon it. But what happened to the East India Company following disintegration of the British Empire after the second world war? Who is the current owner of this once world-conquering trading company? Let us delve into these interesting questions and find out more: When was the East India Company established?
The East India Company was established in England on December 31, 1600 AD as a trading company under a special charter from the British Crown which gave it extraordinary powers and privileges to establish the crown's dominance in other parts of the world, especially in India and East Asia.
Initially, the company established trade relations with Indian rulers, but gradually used its growing military and political influence to capture territory, culminating in the Battle of Plassey on June 23, 1757, which led to the establishment of British dominance in Bengal and laid the foundation for company eventual control over all of India. What happened to British East India Company after India's independence?
After the Battle of Plassey, the British East India Company rapidly increased military presence across India, gaining complete control over vast swathes of territory. However, its policies of oppression led to a growing sentiment of independence among the native, resulting in the 1857 revolution, the first war of India's independence.
Following the 1857 revolution, which was dubbed by the British as a 'sepoy mutiny', the British Crown ended the British East India Company's rule and transferred the administration of India directly under the Queen of England.
The British rule in India came to an end on August 15, 1947, as the once-mighty British Empire and the British East India Company became a shadow of their former selves post World War 2. Notably, the special charter which gave the rights to the East India Company, was completely abolished by the British Crown in 1874. Who currently owns the East India Company?
Ironically, the current owner and CEO of the East India Company is an Indian, the nation it ruled for nearly 200 years. Sanjiv Mehta, an Indian-born British business tycoon. Mehta is currently the CEO of East India Company which now has business interests in the luxury goods sector, selling gift hampers, luxury tea, coffee, and other food items, including several types of beverages as well as luxury homeware.

Robert Vadra appears before ED in Sanjay Bhandari case

NEW DELHI: Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate on Monday for his questioning in connection with the UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari linked money laundering case, official sources said. The businessman's statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. The 56-year-old Vadra was called by the agency to depose last month but he had sought deferment of his summons as he had to travel abroad. He is being investigated by the central probe agency in three different money laundering cases, including this one. The two others pertain to alleged irregularities in land deals. The 63-year-old Bhandari fled to London in 2016 soon after the Income-Tax department raided him in Delhi. He was recently declared a fugitive economic offender by a Delhi court. A UK court last month refused the Indian government's application seeking permission to appeal in Britain's Supreme Court against the discharge of Bhandari in an extradition case against him, virtually ruling out chances of his being brought to the country to face the law. The ED had filed a chargesheet in this case in 2023 alleging Bhandari "acquired" the 12, Bryanston Square house located in London in 2009 and got it renovated "as per the directions of Vadra and the funds for renovation were provided by Robert Vadra." Vadra has denied that he owned any London property directly or indirectly. Terming these charges as a political witch hunt against him, he has said that he was being "hounded and harassed" to subserve political ends.

HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra lift veil on Q1 IT industry outlook

By Justina T. Lee, Rachel Yeo, Harshita Swaminathan & Reina Sasaki Indian software leaders HCL Technologies Ltd. and Tech Mahindra Ltd. will offer more insights into IT services sector's future when they report earnings this week after bigger rival Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. posted a fall in first-quarter sales on cautious client spending. Quarterly sales across India's computer services and IT firms are projected to have slid 0.6 per cent sequentially, Jefferies analysts Akshat Agarwal and Ayush Bansal said in a note previewing the sector. Softer seasonal performance is seen as the main drag on earnings, though could be partly offset by US dollar depreciation boosting firms like HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, and Coforge Ltd., which have a higher exposure to Europe. On Thursday, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. reported a 3 per cent annual decline in sales for the first quarter through June on a constant currency basis as clients were cautious on technology spending due to global trade and geopolitical uncertainties. This also signals it's doubtful that tech services industry will recover this year from deteriorating spending. Looking ahead, deals are likely to continue at a steady pace as clients keep looking at software solutions to optimize operations, Jefferies said, though noting that discretionary IT spending remains under pressure. Meanwhile, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s US expansion plans will be in focus after the Senate passed a tax bill that would make it cheaper for chipmakers to build plants there. TSMC will be eligible for an investment tax credit of 35 per cent if it breaks ground on new plants before a 2026 deadline.

Sensex falls over 400 points, Nifty below 25,100 amid IT sell-off

Stock Market Today: The Indian stock market continued to witness subdued investor sentiment on Monday, July 14, as the earnings season for the first quarter of the financial year 2025-26 (Q1FY26) started off on a weak note. At the global front, uncertainty over trade deals kept investors waiting for concrete market cues. At 11:30 AM, BSE Sensex was trading at 82,107.93, down by nearly 400 points or 0.49 per cent. Whereas, Nifty was just a tad up from the 25,000 level, down by over 100 points or 0.45 per cent. Majority of stocks from the Sensex pack were trading in red. Infosys, Bajaj Finance, Asian Paints, Tech Mahindra and HCL tech were among the top laggards. On the other hand, Eternal (Zomato), Sun Pharma, ITC, Adani Ports and Titan were among the top gainers. Interestingly, broader markets were performing relatively fine. The Nifty Midcap 100 was trading at 58,810, marginally up by 0.29 per cent. Whereas, the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose by 0.58 per cent, quoting 18,872. Sectorally, the Nifty IT was among the worst-performing indices, down by 1.48 per cent and trading at the 37,136 level. Nifty Bank followed a similar trajectory and was down by 0.22 per cent. Media stocks witnessed strength with the Nifty Media index trading at 1,719, up by 0.92 per cent. Sectoral play The majority of the sell-off in the last trading session was driven by IT stocks, following Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reporting lower-than-expected Q1FY26 earnings. IT stocks, which hold a 14.8 per cent weight in the Sensex, second only to banks, saw broad-based declines. Adding to the pressure, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) are switching gears, putting a stop to the buying spree. According to National Securities Depository (NSDL) data, equity flows via stock exchanges for July (up to the 11th) show net outflows of ₹555 crore, marking the first negative monthly figure in over three months, after consistent positive inflows in April, May and June. "Nifty has been exhibiting weak trend weighed mainly by the weakness in the IT stocks. This weakness may persist particularly since the FIIs were big sellers in the cash market last Friday. It is important to note that banking and financials are outperforming even in this weak market. This trend may persist," said VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments. What should traders do? As D-street continues to trade in a range-bound trajectory due to a lack of cues, market analysts suggest that investors take a cautious approach while booking profits during rallies. The Nifty50 is currently trading below the psychological 25,500 level; however, the market tone continues to be cautiously bullish, as per analysts "In the current environment of heightened volatility and mixed market signals, traders are advised to follow a cautious 'sell on rise' strategy, especially when trading with leverage. Booking partial profits on rallies and using tight trailing stop-losses is recommended to manage risk effectively," said Hardik Matalia, derivative analyst- research at Choice Equity Broking. "Fresh long positions should only be considered if the Nifty sustains above the 25,378 level. While the broader market undertone remains cautiously bullish, it is essential to keep a close watch on key technical levels and global market cues," he said.
