Robert Vadra appears before ED in Sanjay Bhandari case

NEW DELHI: Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate on Monday for his questioning in connection with the UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari linked money laundering case, official sources said.
The businessman's statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.
The 56-year-old Vadra was called by the agency to depose last month but he had sought deferment of his summons as he had to travel abroad. He is being investigated by the central probe agency in three different money laundering cases, including this one.
The two others pertain to alleged irregularities in land deals.
The 63-year-old Bhandari fled to London in 2016 soon after the Income-Tax department raided him in Delhi. He was recently declared a fugitive economic offender by a Delhi court.
A UK court last month refused the Indian government's application seeking permission to appeal in Britain's Supreme Court against the discharge of Bhandari in an extradition case against him, virtually ruling out chances of his being brought to the country to face the law.
The ED had filed a chargesheet in this case in 2023 alleging Bhandari "acquired" the 12, Bryanston Square house located in London in 2009 and got it renovated "as per the directions of Vadra and the funds for renovation were provided by Robert Vadra."
Vadra has denied that he owned any London property directly or indirectly.
Terming these charges as a political witch hunt against him, he has said that he was being "hounded and harassed" to subserve political ends.

Cheating and forgery: ED attaches immovable properties worth Rs 6.8 crore of CA in Ahmedabad

The Ahmedabad zonal office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday said it provisionally attached assets in the form of three immovable properties — one bungalow and two open plots — worth Rs 6.80 crore in Ahmedabad under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with an ongoing investigation against Tehmul Sethna, a practicing chartered accountant. The case is related to alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery. The ED said it had initiated its investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by Navarangpura police station in Ahmedabad that revealed that Sethna was handling all the affairs of Environment Research & Development Centre, a trust dedicated to implementing various humanitarian and welfare projects. While managing the trust, he allegedly executed unauthorised withdrawals worth Rs 6.85 crore from its bank account through forged signatures of the trustees, without their knowledge. The investigation, as per the agency, also revealed that the 'unauthorized withdrawals executed from the bank account of the trust was further routed by the accused through multiple individuals/entities directly/indirectly controlled by him thereby creating maze of transaction to conceal the true source of money and to showcase the tainted money as untainted'. Further investigation is under progress.

Jaipur: In a shocking incident, a popular social media influencer from Barmer has been arrested for drug trafficking. The accused has been identified as Bhanwari Devi (32), who goes by the name 'Bhavika' on social media and has over 86,000 followers on the social media site Instagram. She was caught carrying a consignment of MDMA drugs while travelling by a state transport bus to Gujarat. Acting on a tip-off, the Sanchore (Jalore) police intercepted the bus at Chitalwana and arrested Bhanwari. Two packets containing 152 grams of MDMA drugs were recovered from her bag. According to police sources, Bhanwari was en route to deliver the consignment to Unjha and Mehsana in Gujarat. She allegedly charged Rs 10,000 per trip for the delivery. Chitalwana Police Station SHO Baldevram confirmed that Bhanwari Devi is a resident of Vankalpura village in the Mahabar area under Barmer's Sadar police station limits. The drug consignment had been handed over to her by a known Barmer-based drug dealer, Chanani Devi. Bhanwari had boarded the bus to Gujarat from Barmer Bus Stand at around noon on Sunday, after travelling from Jaisalmer. Meanwhile, Barmer police received intelligence about the drug movement and alerted the Ramji Ki Gol Chowki post. By the time officers reached there, the bus had already departed. The alert was then passed to Chitalwana police, who successfully intercepted the vehicle. Sources said that upon being caught, Bhanwari made several phone calls to friends and relatives, but none came to her aid. The case has sent shockwaves across Rajasthan, where Bhanwari enjoyed a significant following as an influencer.
