J&K Legal Metrology Department launches crackdown on dry fruit sellers
Jammu, May 21 (UNI) In response to increasing consumer complaints and to ensure adherence to fair trade practices, the Legal Metrology Department, Jammu and Kashmir, launched a comprehensive enforcement drive targeting traders and distributors of dry fruits across all districts of the Union Territory.
Anuradha Gupta, Controller, Legal Metrology Department, J&K, here on Thursday, said that the crackdown focused on addressing issues of short weighment and the absence of mandatory declarations on product packaging.
She said that special enforcement teams were constituted to conduct surprise inspections across all districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
During the UT wide drive, a total of 244 traders were inspected, out of which 63 traders were booked for violations, said the Controller adding that these included supplying underweight packaged dry fruits and failing to display mandatory labeling information, including net weight, MRP, date of packaging, and manufacturer details, as required under Rule 6 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities)
Rules, 2011.
"This drive underscores our commitment to ensuring that only those packages that are exact in terms of net quantity, and which strictly adhere to Legal Metrology guidelines, are made available to consumers. Such drives will continue in the future as well," said Anuradha Gupta.
The Department has issued a strict advisory to all dry fruit sellers, warning them against selling non-compliant packaged commodities, she said, adding, "Violators will face stringent legal action under the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act."
In addition, consumers have been particularly advised to carefully check the net weight and labeling on packaged goods before purchasing. Public awareness and vigilance play a crucial role, said the Controller.
She said, "being informed about one's rights and responsibilities as a consumer is essential for avoiding exploitation and ensuring fair trade.
Consumers are urged to report any discrepancies in packaged goods."
"Complaints can be lodged through the LMD toll-free helpline: 1800-180-7114 or via official social media handles. The Department remains active on social media platforms to promptly address public grievances and raise consumer awareness," said the Controller.

India, Central Asian nations condemn Pahalgam attack, reaffirm commitment to fighting against terrorism
New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) India and the five Central Asian countries today unequivocally condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, and reaffirmed their firm commitment to fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. In a joint statement, issued after the 4th meeting of the India-Central Asia Dialogue held in New Delhi today, under the chairship of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, the countries reiterated that providing safe haven, using terrorist proxies for cross-border terrorism, terror financing, arms and drugs trafficking, dissemination of a radical ideology and abuse of cyber space to spread disinformation and incite violence, goes against the basic principles of humanity and international relations. They stressed that perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terrorist acts must be held accountable and brought to justice. In this context, they called for early adoption of the UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. They also stressed the need to strengthen UN-led global counter-terrorism cooperation and fully implement the relevant UNSC resolutions, Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and FATF standards. The participating ministers at the dialogue include: FM Sirojiddin Muhriddin of Tajikistan, Deputy PM and FM Murat Nurtleu of Kazakhstan, FM Zheenbek Kulubaev of Kyrgyz Republic, FM Rashid Meredov of Turkmenistan and FM Bakhtiyor Saidov of Uzbekistan. The Ministers appreciated the First meeting of the India-Central Asia Joint Working Group on Chabahar Port held in Mumbai in April 2023. India welcomed the interest of Central Asian countries to utilise the services of the Shahid Beheshti Terminal, being operated by India, at the Chabahar Port for facilitating their trade with India and beyond. They agreed to continue engagement for further developing the transit and transport potential of their countries, through simplification and streamlining of goods transit procedures, including greater use of TIR Carnet between India and Central Asia for movement of goods. The ministers underlined the importance of greater financial connectivity between India and Central Asian countries, including through digital payment systems, enhanced interbank relations, and trade in national currencies to encourage greater trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people exchanges. They also expressed interest in setting up a Joint Working Group to explore ways to further deepen banking and financial connectivity between India and Central Asian partners. The Ministers emphasised optimum usage of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) to enhance connectivity between India and the Central Asian countries. They stressed that connectivity initiatives should be based on the principles of transparency, broad participation, local priorities, financial sustainability, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries. India reiterated its support for the membership of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in INSTC. In this context, Ministers appreciated the initiative taken by Kazakhstan to develop the eastern branch of INSTC. The Ministers noted the importance of holding regular consultations among the National Security Councils of India and the Central Asian countries to strengthen efforts to counter terrorism and other emerging challenges in the region. They looked forward to the third edition of the Consultations to be held in the Kyrgyz Republic. They also expressed interest in joint exploration of rare earth and critical minerals. Appreciating the outcomes of the first India-Central Asia Rare Earth Forum held in September 2024 in New Delhi, they called for holding the second India-Central Asia Rare Earth Forum meeting at the earliest convenience. They also encouraged exchange of delegations to explore new areas of cooperation in critical minerals. 'There are no plans" for a call between President Trump and the billionaire Musk, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles said. Politico had reported that White House aides had scheduled a call Friday with the Tesla CEO to try to patch things up between the two men. Trump is "not interested" in a call, a senior White House official told NBC News. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is focused on the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', the GOP domestic policy bill that Musk had trashed, which triggered their falling out. "That's the mindset he left the Oval Office in yesterday," she said. A Trump administration official added, 'There could be anything — I'd like to de-escalate a very unfortunate situation. But there are no calls on the books, at least not now.' The rift between Trump and Musk comes after friction built more quietly between the tech billionaire and others in the Trump administration during Musk's time at the Department of Government Efficiency. Punjab govt suspends Vigilance SSP for summoning Cong Ludhiana West candidate as ‘favour'

Sondh alleged that a vigilance notice to Ashu 'was part of a deceitful ploy devised by Ashu himself. Upon investigation, it was uncovered that the Vigilance SSP who issued the notice was a former classmate and close friend of Ashu'. Notably, the Vigilance had Thursday summoned Ashu in connection with an alleged school land misuse case in Ludhiana, in which allegations pertain to cheating, criminal breach of trust and forgery. Punjab's Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Home Affairs, Alok Shekhar, issued the suspension order, which read, 'Jagatpreet Singh, PPS (Punjab Police Service officer), SSP Vigilance has been placed under suspension with immediate effect under Rule 4(1) (a) of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970, for his grave misconduct and dereliction of duty.' In Ludhiana, Sondh alleged that 'Ashu manipulated his connections to fabricate the notice, aiming to portray himself as a victim and divert public attention from his alleged multi-crore corruption in a school land scam'. 'This is possibly the first time in India's political history that a politician has stooped so low and fabricated summons to play a victim card. Bharat Bhushan Ashu's intent was clear — to garner sympathy by portraying himself as a target of the current government,' alleged Sondh. The AAP leader alleged that the Congress party is resorting to desperate and unethical tactics out of fear of imminent defeat in Ludhiana West. 'Strict action has been taken against the vigilance officer involved in this conspiracy. The officer who misused his position to favour Ashu has been suspended. Such behaviour will not be tolerated under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann,' he said. However, Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring took a strong exception to the Vigilance Bureau summoning party candidate Ashu amid the latter's election campaign. 'The cat is out of the bag as both Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann are feeling desperate and frustrated about the imminent fact that they are losing the elections,' he claimed.
