Ecosystm's Tim Sheedy highlights ANZ's AI adoption challenges at Neo4j GraphSummit

At the Neo4j GraphSummit in Sydney, Tim Sheedy, Vice President of Research and Chief AI Advisor at Ecosystm, shared his insights on the state of Generative AI (Gen AI) adoption across Australia and New Zealand, highlighting both the potential and challenges the region faces.
"The vast majority of organisations are somewhere in the middle," Sheedy admitted to the audience. "Some organisations are deploying within business units. Some have gone out across their entire organisation. But just to let you know, the vast majority of them - they're not AI-first companies."
Sheedy observed that most companies are still in a "consolidation phase," focused on setting up the data pipelines and AI infrastructure needed for transformation, but not yet seeing AI-driven organisational change.
"76% of firms say they are consolidating, meaning they're getting their data ready, developing AI strategies, and piloting AI applications, but they don't see themselves as fully transforming with AI yet."
Despite these challenges, Sheedy highlighted some successful use cases of AI adoption, particularly in customer experience.
"Organisations that did it well reported a 52% improvement in their customer experience scores," he said. But he emphasised that AI is primarily being used to improve operational efficiency, with businesses seeking ways to do more with less.
"Business leaders want to do more with less or more with what they've got today. They all see AI as a fantastic opportunity to drive productivity."
Sheedy pointed to a growing trend of AI applications in operational tasks such as intelligent document processing, inventory management, and code generation.
"More than half of organisations are already using Gen AI for these tasks, and about 60% are using it in their help desks," he explained. However, he clarified that AI is still not widespread across all functions within most businesses.
"They're not saying all of their document processing across their organisation is intelligent, but they are using it somewhere in their business."
Looking ahead, Sheedy observed the rapid growth of AI usage.
"AI usage is growing, and it's growing quickly," he said. "In addition, areas like cloud resource allocation, software development, and fraud detection are set to experience further AI intervention." He also shared an example of a multinational company that significantly reduced proposal turnaround times, from six weeks to just two days, using Gen AI. "By using Gen AI, they're massively reducing that time to getting that first draft of the proposal together," Sheedy added.
However, Sheedy cautioned about the risks of hasty AI adoption.
"72% of consumers avoid brands after AI errors. And I'd say this is the same as employees in your organisation," he warned.
"You have a bad experience with a chatbot, you're probably not going to use that chatbot again in six months' time, even though it might be much better."
He also referenced the infamous Zillow case, where an AI-driven real estate algorithm lost USD $500 million due to flawed predictions.
"AI can have significant financial consequences if it goes wrong," Sheedy said.
Regulatory and organisational challenges are also slowing adoption. Sheedy highlighted that while Australian regulators have been more consultative, the costs of getting things wrong are significant. "It really is important to get Gen AI right the first time so you don't lose that trust, you don't lose that money, and you don't lose that time," he added.
Skills shortages and data challenges are the primary barriers to AI adoption in ANZ.
"The skills shortages and the data challenges are far more persistent and tougher to address," Sheedy explained. "At the moment, there are thousands of organisations in Australia trying to hire people with skills that either don't exist, or if they do exist, they're not going to get them for what they're paying."
Sheedy also emphasised the need for better data management. "Our data isn't clean enough. Our data doesn't understand context," he said. He advocated for a new approach to data, particularly through the use of graph databases, which provide a "semantic AI" layer that enables businesses to understand the relationships between data points.
"Graph database gives your data within your organisation the same capability as the data that sits within those language models. It helps your organisation understand the relationships between data - it's that semantic relationship understanding piece that you don't have," Sheedy explained.
Sheedy also pointed out that AI adoption is often hindered by the difficulty of changing core business processes.
"You have to change a process within your organisation in order to make that AI do something better or different," he said. This challenge is particularly evident when organisations need to integrate AI with legacy systems.
At the organisational level, Sheedy highlighted the need for better understanding of AI.
"People in our organisation don't understand our companies. They don't understand what AI can and cannot do. We need to actually upskill broadly across the business," he said.
Drawing from his experience with cloud computing, he suggested that AI adoption will only accelerate once organisations train their entire workforce on the technology's capabilities and limitations.
"I believe that AI will go into hyper growth when organisations are starting to train up all of your employees across the entire business on what AI is, what it can do, what it can't do, starting with the board of directors and the CEO."
Sheedy also stressed the importance of embracing emerging technologies like graph databases to stay competitive.
"Graph DB is going to be everywhere within our organisations," he said. "We're at the beginning of a massive wave, and it's going to reshape the web and the way we understand data. We need to get on board early and help drive the transformation."

Sensitive data exposure rises with employee use of GenAI tools

Harmonic Security has released its quarterly analysis finding that a significant proportion of data shared with Generative AI (GenAI) tools and AI-enabled SaaS applications by employees contains sensitive information. The analysis was conducted on a dataset comprising 1 million prompts and 20,000 files submitted to 300 GenAI tools and AI-enabled SaaS applications between April and June. According to the findings, 22% of files (total 4,400) and 4.37% of prompts (total 43,700) included sensitive data. The categories of sensitive data encompassed source code, access credentials, proprietary algorithms, merger and acquisition (M&A) documents, customer or employee records, and internal financial information. Use of new GenAI tools The data highlights that in the second quarter alone, organisations on average saw employees begin using 23 previously unreported GenAI tools. This expanding variety of tools increases the administrative load on security teams, who are required to vet each tool to ensure it meets security standards. A notable proportion of AI tool use occurs through personal accounts, which may be unsanctioned or lack sufficient safeguards. Almost half (47.42%) of sensitive uploads to Perplexity were made via standard, non-enterprise accounts. The numbers were lower for other platforms, with 26.3% of sensitive data entering ChatGPT through personal accounts, and just 15% for Google Gemini. Data exposure by platform Analysis of sensitive prompts identified ChatGPT as the most common origin point in Q2, accounting for 72.6%, followed by Microsoft Copilot with 13.7%, Google Gemini at 5.0%, Claude at 2.5%, Poe at 2.1%, and Perplexity at 1.8%. Code leakage represented the most prevalent form of sensitive data exposure, particularly within ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, and Baidu Chat. File uploads and risks The report found that, on average, organisations uploaded 1.32GB of files in the second quarter, with PDFs making up approximately half of all uploads. Of these files, 21.86% contained sensitive data. The concentration of sensitive information was higher in files compared to prompts. For example, files accounted for 79.7% of all stored credit card exposure incidents, 75.3% of customer profile leaks, and 68.8% of employee personally identifiable information (PII) incidents. Files accounted for 52.6% of exposure volume related to financial projections. Less visible sources of risk GenAI risk does not only arise from well-known chatbots. Increasingly, regular SaaS tools that integrate large language models (LLMs) - often without clear labelling as GenAI - are becoming sources of risk as they access and process sensitive information. Canva was reportedly used for documents containing legal strategy, M&A planning, and client data. Replit and were involved with proprietary code and access keys, while Grammarly and Quillbot edited contracts, client emails, and internal legal content. International exposure Use of Chinese GenAI applications was cited as a concern. The study found that 7.95% of employees in the average enterprise engaged with a Chinese GenAI tool, leading to 535 distinct sensitive exposure incidents. Within these, 32.8% were related to source code, access credentials, or proprietary algorithms, 18.2% involved M&A documents and investment models, 17.8% exposed customer or employee PII, and 14.4% contained internal financial data. Preventative measures "The good news for Harmonic Security customers is that this sensitive customer data, personally identifiable information (PII), and proprietary file contents never actually left any customer tenant, it was prevented from doing so. But had organizations not had browser based protection in place, sensitive information could have ended up training a model, or worse, in the hands of a foreign state. AI is now embedded in the very tools employees rely on every day and in many cases, employees have little knowledge they are exposing business data." Harmonic Security Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Alastair Paterson made this statement, referencing the protections offered to their customers and the wider risks posed by the pervasive nature of embedded AI within workplace tools. Harmonic Security advises enterprises to seek visibility into all tool usage – including tools available on free tiers and those with embedded AI – to monitor the types of data being entered into GenAI systems and to enforce context-aware controls at the data level. The recent analysis utilised the Harmonic Security Browser Extension, which records usage across SaaS and GenAI platforms and sanitises the information for aggregate study. Only anonymised and aggregated data from customer environments was used in the analysis.

Maureen Perrelli has been appointed as Chief Channel Officer to lead Quest Software's global channel strategy. Perrelli's previous roles include Vice President of Worldwide Channel Sales at NCR and Chief Revenue Officer at Brivo, alongside her experience at Oracle, GE and Secureworks. Within the Asia Pacific and Japan region, Angela Maniscalco steps into the Head of Channel post after five years leading erwin sales across APJ and ANZ, including during and after its integration into Quest. Maniscalco's earlier experience includes serving as Head of Strategic Partnerships and Marketing APAC at Insight. Channel focus These appointments are positioned as part of a targeted effort to grow Quest's local presence by delivering enhanced partner programs, increased enablement, and new opportunities for enterprise collaboration. Quest sees the Australian partner ecosystem as a central component in driving growth, particularly in sectors faced with high regulatory requirements. "Australian partners are at the heart of Quest's growth strategy as we expand our cybersecurity, data, and modernisation portfolios. Central to this refreshed approach are enhanced enablement resources, new certification pathways, and a suite of benefits across Quest's solution areas. Three solution pillars Quest Software is grouping its offerings into three primary areas. The first is Cybersecurity & IT Resilience, which includes tools for Active Directory protection, threat detection and recovery. Among the upcoming products, the GenAI-enhanced Security Guardian is scheduled to launch later in 2025, promising to enhance detection and response capabilities for environments using Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID. The second area, AI-ready Data & Governance, equips organisations with support for discovering, governing, and preparing enterprise data for compliance, analytics and future AI initiatives. This emphasis responds to increasing regulatory scrutiny and the drive toward making enterprise data audit-ready for statutory compliance and analytics. The third core pillar, Migrations & Modernisation, encompasses migration solutions for Microsoft platforms such as Active Directory, Exchange, and SQL Server. Quest points to its On Demand Migration platform, the first migration product to achieve Microsoft 365 Certification, providing assurances to partners involved in cloud transformation projects. Quest expects these solution pillars to be strengthened by the new leadership structure and targeted partner program enhancements. Deeper partner engagement The company is also investing in joint go-to-market initiatives and field engagement, aiming to equip its Australian partners to address customer challenges more effectively and grow their own businesses. Pangea unveils AIDR platform to strengthen generative AI security

Pangea has launched its AI Detection and Response (AIDR) platform as enterprise adoption of generative AI (GenAI) continues to rise. The platform has been designed to address security challenges resulting from increased use of GenAI tools in the workplace, as well as to provide oversight and controls for an expanding set of generative AI applications. Pangea AIDR supports monitoring and response capabilities for employee use of AI, internally developed applications, so-called AI factories, and other deployment environments across organisations. Addressing new threats The firm states that existing enterprise security controls do not provide sufficient coverage for certain GenAI threats, including indirect prompt injection and excessive agency – scenarios where users or systems might manipulate large language models (LLMs) in unintended ways. The new platform is aimed at closing these visibility gaps by enabling security teams to monitor and govern AI use more proactively. "With GenAI we're witnessing the fastest software adoption curve in history - but also the fastest-growing security blind spot," said Oliver Friedrichs, Founder and CEO of Pangea. "Pangea AIDR is the first unified AI security platform to serve both security teams concerned about employee use of GenAI, and product teams to protect homegrown AI workloads. The platform fits seamlessly into existing security operation workflows and technology stacks, and is part of a larger wave of innovations we're bringing to market to address the AI attack surface." Capabilities of the platform Pangea AIDR is built around Pangea's core AI Guard technology, and utilises a network of AI sensors to deliver telemetry to a detection and response engine. Alerts and logs can be viewed from an analyst console, and the platform offers capabilities for automation of response actions where required. The platform's main features include detection and classification of GenAI usage across browsers, applications, agents, gateways, and cloud infrastructure. This allows teams to track which tools are in use, when, and how. From a security policy standpoint, AIDR provides a unified control plane to apply consistent access and data management policies across LLMs, agentic applications, shadow AI, and development environments. In terms of defence, the detection engine is set up to intercept prompt injection attacks, jailbreaks, data leakage, and additional threats specific to GenAI platforms. Early access sensors available at launch include capabilities for monitoring browser-based AI activity (including Chrome), integration with developer-built agentic frameworks, cloud log analysis for services such as AWS Bedrock, protection for AI gateways, and support for direct integration with application-level AI through SDKs. Observability for cloud-native AI is provided via OTEL log format ingestion. Pangea states it is planning further integrations during the third quarter of 2025, which will extend support to tools including GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Edge, and additional enterprise AI end points. Industry viewpoints The need for greater visibility into AI usage in enterprise settings was supported by remarks from industry stakeholders. Sebastian Goodwin, Chief Trust Officer at Autodesk, said: "Rapid AI technology adoption in the enterprise has created significant visibility challenges for security teams and introduced new threats like indirect prompt injection that can evade existing security controls. It is clear now that this growing AI attack surface demands its own visibility, detection and response strategy." Security research and leadership team Pangea has aligned the launch of AIDR with an expansion of its internal security research division, Pangea Labs. The company has also introduced new red teaming services for AI systems and protections specific to new forms of attacks, including image injection attacks targeting LLMs. In these cases, malicious code is inserted into images processed by the AI model, representing another risk vector for enterprises. The platform and research portfolio are led by a team including Dr. James A. Hoagland, responsible for AI threat taxonomy and methodology, and Joey Melo, described as the only participant to escape Pangea's three-room prompt injection challenge. The broader leadership includes Founder and CEO Oliver Friedrichs, Co-Founder and CTO Sourabh Satish, and Chief Product Officer Robert Truesdell.
