The challenges and triumphs of solo motherhood
There are a lot of books on parenting, but very few about what happens when you suddenly find yourself doing it on your own. This was the experience of Australian author and podcaster Rachel Maksimovic. She became a solo mum when she was just 20 weeks' pregnant - and among the financial and career challenges it brought - there were a host of other, unexpected things. That prompted her to start her podcast called Mothering on My Own. It's now morphed into a book of the same name, in which 30 women who have found themselves parenting on their own share their stories. Rachel says society still judges single mums negatively - and fails to recognise the fullness of their lives.

Australian rugby league legend Mal Meninga as coach of new Perth Bears NRL team
Rugby league legend Mal Meninga. Photo: Photosport Meninga will step down as Australia coach to take on the role with the Bears, which were announced as the NRL's 18th franchise last month. "Personally, this is one of the most exciting challenges of my career," Meninga said. "To have the opportunity to take our great game back to Western Australia to start a new team, and to bring with it a much-loved rugby league community and heritage brand in the Bears. "It's a great privilege and responsibility I've been given to be one of the leaders in the formation of the club, and I'm looking forward getting to stuck into the work that needs to be done to deliver a team that represents WA and is competitive from day one." Meninga, a rugby league Immortal, has previously coached in the NRL, having led the Canberra Raiders between 1997 and 2001. The Bears' return to the NRL is a just reward for the diehard fans who kept the red and black colours alive during a period in the wilderness. He made a name for himself as a representative coach, however, guiding Queensland to nine State of Origin series victories, including eight straight (2006-2013). Meninga had coached the Kangaroos from 2016 until now, winning two World Cups during his tenure. While in charge of the national team, he managed 26 wins from 29 Tests. Photo: Photosport As a player, Meninga captained the Kangaroos between 1990 and 1994, and skippered the Raiders to three premierships (1989-1990 and 1994). Bears chief executive Anthony De Ceglie said Meninga was an ideal choice to coach the expansion club. "We're extremely honoured that Mal has signed on to become the inaugural coach of the Perth Bears," he said. "Mal is not just an Immortal of the NRL but an immortal of the Australian sporting landscape. "He is an icon whose leadership qualities such as courage, honesty and hard work are rightly renowned across the country and make him the perfect coach to build a brand new team from the ground up." - ABC

The actors, who starred together in Deadpool & Wolverine, announced on Thursday, US time, they had purchased the successful team, which has won three championships in just four seasons. In a joint statement, Reynolds and Jackman said they were "incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure". "Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing," the statement said. "He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. "Apologies in advance to Australia. "No comment on whether we're writing this in our BONDS. No further questions." This is the latest sports venture for Reynolds, who purchased Wrexham AFC - one of the world's oldest soccer clubs - alongside fellow Hollywood actor Rob McElhenney. They chronicled their 2021 purchase and subsequent stewardship of the club in wildly popular Disney+ docuseries, Welcome to Wrexham. The club has gone on to achieve incredible success, becoming the first team in English football history to achieve three consecutive promotions, climbing from the National League to the Championship. Reynolds and McElhenney were also among a group of investors in the Alpine Formula One team in 2023 and were part of an investment group that acquired Colombian club La Equidad this year. Reynolds and Jackman join driver and chief executive Tom Slingsby in rebranding the Australian team as the BONDS Flying Roos, with underwear company BONDS as its title partner. Slingsby, an Olympic gold medallist, told the ABC that Reynolds became interested in the purchase after members of his team attended several SailGP events. "They pitched it to Ryan, saying, 'Hey, this is a pretty cool sport - maybe we should come check it out and get involved'," Slingsby said. "Sure enough, they looked into it a bit more and they were interested in buying our team. So it all went from there." He said the actors would bring "star power" and a "storytelling ability" to the sport, but would not be drawn on whether a docuseries like Welcome to Wrexham was on the horizon. The rebranded team is now preparing for its debut at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, kicking off Saturday, local time. "There no better way to cap off an amazing week for us than winning the event," Slingsby said. "I'm a sailor at heart, and that's my main focus - trying to win events for Australia. That's what we've got to try to do this weekend." - ABC
