HSBC boss to face questions over exposure to China

Times29-04-2025

The boss of HSBC is set to be questioned by the City next week on the fallout on the Asia-focused bank from President Trump's trade war with China when the FTSE 100 lender reports first-quarter results.
Shares in the London-based bank, which counts Hong Kong as its biggest market, fell sharply in the wider market sell-off this month as global equities tumbled amid investor fears about the economic impact of the tit-for-tat tariffs imposed by Washington and Beijing.
The growing friction between the world's two biggest economies poses a threat to HSBC because its business model revolves around acting as a bridge for trade and money flows between East and West and it has been tilting its operations further towards China, and Asia more broadly,

South Korea crypto industry to win no matter snap election outcome

South Korea's crypto scene will gain either way in the country's presidential elections, as both candidates have run on pro-crypto platforms, pledged to ease regulations and expand crypto access. South Koreans will head to the polls on June 3 to elect a new president in a snap election to replace Yoon Suk-yeol, who was impeached and removed from office over his attempt to declare martial law in December. Currently leading the polls is Lee Jae-myung of the center-left Democratic Party, who is up against staunch conservative and People Power Party nominee Kim Moon-soo. Lee has proposed legalizing spot crypto exchange-traded funds and wants to allow South Korea's $884 billion national pension fund to invest in cryptocurrency. He has also advocated for wider issuance of a stablecoin backed by the South Korean won as part of modernizing the country's financial system and stemming capital outflows. 'We need to establish a won-backed stablecoin market to prevent national wealth from leaking overseas,' he said during a policy discussion in May. 'I will create a safe investment environment so that young people can build assets and plan for the future.' Lee also aims to ease strict banking rules that require crypto exchanges to partner with licensed banks to offer fiat services. Kim also supports legalizing spot crypto ETFs and backed Lee's proposal, showing rare bipartisan alignment. He has also pledged to ease regulations and expand crypto adoption. Simon Seojoon Kim, the CEO of Seoul-based venture capital firm Hashed Ventures, told Bloomberg that with all the major candidates supporting pro-crypto policies, 'the country's crypto investors face a clear win regardless of the election outcome.' A Gallup Korea poll on May 28 showed 49% of respondents favoured Lee, while 36% said they would vote for Kim. Urgency for clear regulations The urgency for clear regulation stems from South Korea's high retail crypto participation. Stricter regulations were implemented in July 2024 to impose strict requirements on exchanges, including potential life sentences for criminal violations. On May 20, the country's Financial Services Commission finalized sweeping new measures, introducing new guidelines for nonprofit crypto sales and stricter listing standards for exchanges. South Korea's Democratic Party also launched a Digital Asset Committee focused on developing cryptocurrency policies and promoting industry growth in May. South Korea has one of the world's most active crypto markets, and daily trading volumes on crypto exchanges sometimes exceed the country's major stock indexes, with user numbers recently surpassing 16 million. First Look: Janhvi Kapoor Makes her Cannes Film Festival Debut

Janhvi is the 28-year-old daughter of Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor and late actress Sridevi. Her sister Khushi Kapoor is also an actress, as is her cousin, Sonam Kapoor. She has appeared in over a dozen films since making her acting debut in 2018, and has also starred on runways for labels like Rahul Mishra, Amit Aggarwal and Kalki at Lakme Fashion Week in India. For her first-ever red carpet look at Cannes, she placed her trust in Tahiliani and her cousin – stylist Rhea Kapoor – to conceptualise the outfit. 'I think she [Rhea] really wanted to bring out a side of me that hasn't been explored much, and focus more on my face and on how she sees me,' Janhvi explains. Making the dress: Tarun Tahiliani Making the dress: Tarun Tahiliani For both of the Kapoors, it was important that Janhvi wear an Indian designer for her first Cannes appearance. 'I really think it's their time to shine. I mean, I've known this for a really long time,' says the actress. 'A lot of the textiles that are put on these international garments, on these international red carpets, on these huge Western actors or huge global stars from all around the world have been textiles that were manufactured and created in India by Indian and craftsmen. So I think it is high time that's put on a global stage and our designers are given the kind of credit that they deserve," she adds, pointing out that the Met Gala last month saw a great turnout of Indian designers, from Sabyasachi to Gaurav Gupta and Prabal Gurung. 'I think I look the best and I feel my most comfortable in Indian clothes. And if I'm being put on a global stage like this, I'd like to feel my most comfortable and confident. So it was honestly a very organic decision for me.' 'Specifically for the film that I've come here with, it was important for me to stay in touch with my roots,' continues Janhvi, who is in Cannes for the premiere of her film, Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. Also starring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, it tells the story of two friends from a village in North India who find their friendship impacted when they pursue jobs as police officers. Janhvi says that although the plot is rooted in India, it has global relevance. 'It's a story that I think is the need of the hour. It invites people to introspect at being perpetrators, or at the receiving end of any sort of social exclusion, which I think is a human tragedy that's occurring all around the world in different countries," she shares. "It's an observational piece on different sorts of social hierarchies, and a study of human nature.' This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from. Keeping these themes in mind, she gave Rhea a brief about the film, and expressed the kind of energy she wanted to embody, in terms of being taken 'a little more seriously' for her Cannes debut. And while Janhvi acknowledges that fashion is a massive aspect of the festival, she points out that the event is ultimately about the movies being honoured. 'I really wanted the attention to stay on the fact that we're here representing a film,' she says. 'It's a huge opportunity to even be in the vicinity of so many artists that I admire and look up to, and the fact that our movie is in competition is nerve-wracking, but very exciting. I'm thrilled, and constantly pinching myself.'

MARA's Bitcoin mining revenue hits record $752M as BTC price soars

MARA Holdings, formerly Marathon Digital Holdings, reached a new all-time high in Bitcoin mining revenue, fueled by its recent surge to a record price. The company's annualized mining revenue exceeded $752 million on May 27, according to data from CryptoQuant, making it the most profitable day in the company's history. Marathon is currently the world's largest publicly traded Bitcoin mining firm by market capitalization. 'Quarterly reports are slow. Onchain shows revenue in real time,' CryptoQuant founder and CEO Ki Young Ju wrote in a May 27 X post, confirming the milestone. Marathon's record revenue surge occurred days after Bitcoin rose to a new all-time high of $112,000 on May 22, a development attributed by some analysts to Japanese bond market turbulence, which saw bond yields rise to new highs amid economic turmoil in the country. The revenue surge comes two weeks after MARA's earnings report for Q1, which missed Wall Street estimates by 0.35%. The company's Bitcoin production fell 19% year-over-year, primarily due to the April 2024 Bitcoin halving, which cut block rewards in half from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC. Marathon is the world's largest Bitcoin mining firm with a $5.18 billion market capitalization, according to Companiesmarketcap data. MARA's Bitcoin holdings surpass $5 billion Despite the reduction in production, Marathon has continued to expand its Bitcoin holdings. As of May 27, MARA's Bitcoin holdings were 48,237 BTC worth over $5.28 billion, making the Bitcoin mining company the world's second-largest corporate Bitcoin holder with over 0.23% of the total supply, Bitbo data showed. The top spot still belongs to Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), which holds over $63 billion in Bitcoin. Despite the revenue surge, daily miner revenues averaged around $50 million, significantly below historic peaks of $80 million, signaling that there is still 'room to climb back to those previous highs,' noted macro researcher and CryptoQuant author Axel Adler, in a May 27 X post. Marathon adopted Bitcoin as a strategic treasury reserve asset in July 2024, when it added $124 million worth of BTC to its balance sheet. Source:
