'Forgotten Operation Dost': Indian fruit traders boycott Turkish goods over support to Pakistan

NEW DELHI: Protests have erupted in several parts of the nation, as fruit traders begin boycotting Turkish goods, especially apples—after Turkey voiced support for Pakistan in its actions against India.
Traders have strongly opposed Turkey's stance, saying any country that supports Pakistan against India will face a boycott. "Turkey gave drones to Pakistan, which were used to attack India. That's why we've decided to stop selling Turkish fruits," a fruit vendor told news agency ANI.
Sellers indicated that whilst previously ordered consignments are still in transit, they will not place additional orders. "We've decided to stop buying Turkish fruits from now on.
Any country that supports terrorism will not be entertained in Indian markets," another trader said.
India's annual imports from Turkey exceed Rs 1,200 crore, with fruits, especially apples, comprising a considerable portion.
Protesters criticised Turkey for utilising Indian revenue to support Pakistan against India and pledged to halt the sale of Turkish produce in neighbourhood markets.
"We have boycotted all products from Turkey.
Apart from apples, several other fruits were imported from Turkey. We took this step because Turkey supported Pakistan. Turkey used to do good business in India, but now we have ended all trade with them. We will never import anything from Turkey in the future," a local fruit trader, Shadab Khan said.
"Through the media, we learned that Turkey has supported Pakistan. Turkey's apple trade in India is worth around Rs1,200-1,400 crores, and there are 2-3 other fruits also imported. Since Turkey supported Pakistan, we have decided to sever all business ties with them. We don't want any country benefiting from trade with India and then using it against us. We are now boycotting all
imported fruits from Turkey
and will not engage in any business with them," another fruit vendor, Noor Mohammed said.

(SJM) firmly denounced Turkey's strengthening military alliance with Pakistan and demanded immediate economic sanctions, flight suspensions, and a nationwide boycott of tourism and Turkish goods, as stated in an official SJM release.
According to the manch, "Turkey seems to have forgotten India's timely humanitarian aid during its times of crisis. In February 2023, following a devastating earthquake, India was among the first to launch "Operation Dost," sending over 100 tons of relief materials, NDRF teams, military medical units, field hospitals, and essential supplies.
India stood by Turkey not just as a trade partner but as a responsible global power upholding the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
At multilateral forums like the G20 and UN, India consistently supported inclusive engagement with Turkey, including discussions on energy security and counter-terrorism."
SJM urged Indian citizens to boycott Turkish products, travel, and cultural exports as a show of support for Indian soldiers and national interest. They called on people to choose self-reliance instead of depending on countries that support India's adversaries.

MHA releases ₹25 cr for damaged houses due to Pak shelling post Op Sindoor
Three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced additional compensation to the families whose houses in the border areas were damaged in Pakistan shelling post Operation Sindoor, Union home minister Amit Shah facilitated provision of release of ₹25 crore from his ministry for as many as 2,060 houses. The ministry of home affairs (MHA) said in a statement on Monday, 'Following the announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding additional compensation for houses damaged in border areas, Shah ensured swift action by facilitating an additional provision of ₹25 crore from the MHA for 2,060 houses.' While inaugurating the Chenab railway bridge, the world's highest single arch rail bridge, that completes the 272-km long Udhampur-Srinagar -Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, Modi said last Friday that stung by India's Operation Sindoor, a desperate Pakistan attacked innocent people including children in Jammu and Poonch. As a special case, Modi announced additional compensation of ₹2 lakh for each fully damaged house and ₹1 lakh for each partially damaged house. 'The MHA has ensured swift implementation of this decision. Similar compensation will also be provided in the border areas of Punjab,' the ministry said on Monday. Following operation Sindoor, several incidents of cross border shelling were reported in border districts of Jammu and Kashmir. 'Hundreds of families suffered due to cross border shelling on residential areas, schools, religious structures including gurudwaras, temples, mosques and commercial properties. The administration took proactive measures to anticipate possible events and ensure effective response. A total of 3.25 lakh persons were evacuated from the border districts, out of which about 15,000 persons were accommodated in about 397 shelter sheds or accommodation centres equipped with facilities like food, water, health care, electricity etc,' MHA said. It further said that 394 ambulances were deployed in all border districts to take patients to hospitals for treatment during the shelling, out of which 62 ambulances were deployed in Poonch district alone. 'A total of 2,818 civil defence volunteers were also deployed for services related to health, fire and emergency services, livestock, essential supplies etc,' it added. Operation Sindoor was India's direct military response to the April 22 terror strike at Pahalgam in Kashmir that killed 26 people in what was the worst attack on civilians since the 26/11 Mumbai strikes. Indian forces launched the operation in the early hours of May 7, bombing nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The pre-dawn strikes on May 7 --- in which at least 100 terrorists were killed --- sparked a series of attacks and counterattacks across the western border, involving fighter jets, missiles, armed drones, and fierce artillery and rocket duels. In one such counterattack on the night of May 9-10, the Indian Air Force struck targets at 13 Pakistani air bases and military installations. After four days of fighting, military hostilities were stopped on May 10 evening as the two nations reached an understanding. Earlier, Shah visited Poonch on May 29–30, during which he handed over appointment letters on compassionate grounds to the family members of those who lost their lives due to cross-border firing. 'As per the norms, compensation for the damages caused by cross-border shelling was provided immediately,' MHA said.

Govt reiterates commitment to women's empowerment
Hyderabad: Telangana's IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu has reaffirmed the state government's resolute commitment to women's empowerment, stressing that this dedication is evidenced not merely by words, but through decisive and measurable actions. The Minister made these remarks during the ceremonial launch of the 'SITHA' (She Is The Hero Always) app, developed by SheJobs, held here on Monday. He described the app's introduction as a celebration of a broader movement, one that aims to provide women across Telangana, irrespective of their background, with equal access to opportunities, economic independence, and leadership roles. 'True empowerment,' the Minister asserted, 'occurs when women are free to exercise their rights within the household and are actively involved in decision-making.' Quoting the latest 'Men and Women in India – 2024' report, released by the Central Statistical Office (CSO), he highlighted that 86% of rural women and 89% of urban women in Telangana are participating in household decisions. 'These are not just statistics,' he stated, 'but indicators of Telangana's silent revolution towards gender equity. They represent steps towards fulfilling the vision of a just and inclusive society.' He underlined that women form the backbone of Telangana's social fabric, and the government remains unwavering in its mission to ensure equal access to education, employment, and leadership. The government is establishing Mahila Shakti Canteens at government offices and tourist locations and has already distributed Rs 21,000 crore in zero interest loans within just the first year of this initiative. Furthermore, Telangana has entered agreements with oil corporations to set up petrol bunks in all 31 districts, which will be managed by women's collectives, in an effort to further promote self reliance and financial security.
