Eagles LB Room Moves From Liability to NFL's Best

Eagles LB Room Moves From Liability to NFL's Best originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
For decades, the Philadelphia Eagles linebacker room was a revolving door of disappointment. One year it was Alex Singleton trying to fill massive gaps. The next, it was converting safety Nate Gerry to linebacker out of desperation. Veterans like Eric Wilson and Duke Riley came and went without making a lasting impact. The position was treated like an afterthought—the Eagles rarely used draft capital, not selecting a linebacker in the first round from 1979 to 2025.

That all changed in a stunning two-year transformation. According to Pro Football Focus' latest rankings, the Eagles now boast the NFL's best linebacker unit, spearheaded by 2024's second-highest graded linebacker Zack Baun and rookie first-round pick Jihaad Campbell.
The numbers tell the story of their previous struggles. In 2022, T.J. Edwards earned an 84.4 PFF overall grade—second-best among all linebackers—while recording 158 tackles. But after losing both Edwards and Kyzir White (110 tackles) to free agency, the 2023 season epitomized these struggles. Second-year player Nakobe Dean was named starter and given the green dot to call the defense, but suffered a foot injury in Week 1. The Eagles scrambled with journeymen including Nicholas Morrow, Zach Cunningham, Myles Jack and Christian Elliss—none providing consistent impact.
Determined to fix the position, the Eagles made linebacker a priority in 2024. They signed Zack Baun to a one-year, $3.5 million prove-it deal, brought in veteran Oren Burks and drafted Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the fifth round. Combined with Dean returning from injury, the Eagles assembled a completely new corps that looked like another collection of question marks.
Everything changed when defensive coordinator Vic Fangio arrived. His system demanded versatile athletes who could cover, blitz, and stop the run with equal effectiveness. At the center of Philadelphia's renaissance stands Baun, whose journey from New Orleans role player to Philadelphia superstar reads like a sports fairy tale. He finished 2024 with a 90.1 PFF overall grade (second among linebackers), recording 151 total tackles, 5 forced fumbles, 3.5 sacks, and 1 interception. In the playoffs, he added 33 tackles and 2 more interceptions, including one in Super Bowl LIX.

Dean provided the perfect complement, earning a 77.4 PFF grade and ranking 11th among qualified linebackers. The contrast was stark—T.J. Edwards posted a career-worst 60.7 PFF grade in 2024 after leaving Philadelphia, showing how Fangio's system maximized talent. The Eagles rewarded Baun with a three-year, $51 million extension.
The Eagles' commitment to the position when they traded up to select Alabama's Jihaad Campbell with the 31st pick in 2025—their first first-round linebacker since Jerry Robinson from UCLA in 1979. Campbell brings rare versatility at 6-3, 244 pounds, with college numbers of 117 tackles, 5 sacks, and 11½ tackles for loss. He offers similar skillsets to Baun, creating multiple looks for Fangio's defense.
The current room represents perfect construction: Baun as the All-Pro anchor, Campbell as the high-ceiling rookie, Dean as the reliable middle linebacker, Trotter Jr. as the legacy player with high football IQ, Burks as the proven playoff performer, and Smael Mondon Jr. as the developmental prospect. This depth allows exotic blitz packages while ensuring injury protection, as demonstrated when Burks seamlessly replaced Dean during the playoffs.
Linebackers coach Bobby King deserves significant credit for maximizing this diverse group's collective abilities. The transformation becomes even more impressive historically—Campbell and Baun may finally give the Eagles their answer to legendary duos like Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman, bringing speed, versatility, and instincts to the second level.

The nightmare years of rotating cast members are over. In their place stands a group embodying everything modern NFL linebackers should be: fast, versatile, intelligent, and championship-proven.

NFL legend Peyton Manning shares thoughts on former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud

Former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud has had a pretty remarkable start to his NFL career. He was the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year and has led the Houston Texans to two straight playoff appearances. Of course, as with many sports fans, they want more and they want it now. Stroud took some criticism in his second season, as it seemed like a bit of a regression, but NFL legend Peyton Manning begs to differ. In an event with Fanatics, both Peyton and Eli Manning took the stage with Stroud, Bryce Young, and Celeb Williams. In a matter of just 63 seconds, Peyton heaped the praise on Stroud, shutting down anyone who thinks he isn't doing enough. "...I didn't win a playoff game 'til my sixth year. He's two for two." - Peyton Manning Manning talked about how hard it is to come into the league and play well as a rookie, and then began the compliments of how well the former Buckeye prepares in watching film and doing study. He continued on comparing Stroud's beginning to his own NFL start, saying, "He went to the playoffs in his second year. He was 22. Let's be careful saying it was a down year. I didn't win a playoff game 'til my sixth year. He's two for two." That's big time coming from one of the all-time NFL greats. While Stroud's numbers weren't as strong in year two, throwing for fewer yards and touchdowns and more than doubling his interceptions, he also had to navigate a number of injuries to his offensive line (he was sacked 52 times, which was second most in the NFL) as well as injuries to his top three receivers. Manning also points out that after such a strong rookie campaign, teams had more film to watch to make adjustments. The Texans are looking to build on the success of the past two seasons and have added some more firepower to the team. With a healthy roster, Stroud is poised to take another step forward in his third year.

The Lakers are moving up in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft

Historically, second-round draft picks in the NBA don't amount to much. Sometimes, they can yield a rotation player, but that tends to be the exception rather than the rule. But over the past several years, the Los Angeles Lakers have found some diamonds in the rough in the second round. Players such as Ivica Zubac and Max Christie have panned out and become quite useful players in time. Advertisement The Lakers were going to have the No. 55 pick in the second round of this year's draft, which is taking place on Thursday. But they reportedly agreed to send that pick and some cash to the Chicago Bulls in order to acquire the No. 45 pick. According to the Los Angeles Times' Brad Turner, the team gave up $2.5 million to acquire the No. 45 pick. Unfortunately, that means it will be hard-capped at the second apron, at least for now. On draft day 2022, the Lakers executed a trade to acquire a second-round pick that became Christie, and three years earlier, they traded for Talen Horton-Tucker, who had been taken by the Orlando Magic in the second round, on draft day. They will be hoping to find another hidden gem this time around. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: The Lakers are moving up in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft

Benches Clear in Cubs' Win Over Cardinals After Heated Exchange

Benches Clear in Cubs' Win Over Cardinals After Heated Exchange originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs secured a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday afternoon to split a four-game series. However, the ending of the game involved a heated exchange with both teams' benches clearing. Advertisement After allowing a leadoff double while leading 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, in a 1-2 count, Cubs pitcher Daniel Palencia hit Willson Contreras with a high fastball. Contreras had words for Palencia as he walked to first base, which also brought the tying run to the plate with no outs. Palencia would go on to strike out the next three batters to secure the win for the Cubs. As he walked off the mound celebrating, Palencia shouted something in the direction of Contreras, which led to a heated exchange and the benches for each team clearing. Despite the flair for the dramatic, both teams returned to their respective dugouts rather quickly. After the game, Palencia made it clear he had no intention of hitting Contreras. Advertisement 'It was high intensity,' Palencia told reporters in St. Louis after the game. 'I was very hyped. That's part of the game. Nothing was intentional. I don't want to hit that guy. I've been watching that guy since I was a kid. I feel proud for him, what he's doing for the game. The moment was intense, close game. I think it was just that.' Contreras also apologized for his actions after the game. 'My reaction was bad," Contreras told the media. "I apologize to the Chicago Cubs for the way I reacted … I don't want to fight them.' This wasn't the first time Contreras has been caught in the middle of an altercation this season. A couple of weeks ago, against the Milwaukee Brewers, Contreras was involved in a collision at first base that left a sour taste for Brewers' players. Advertisement Later in that game, Brewers' pitcher Jose Quintana hit Contreras with a pitch in response. However, Contreras got the last laugh in that game as he homered in his next at-bat in the Cardinals' 8-5 win. Cardinals celebrate after Willson Contreras' walk-off singleJeff Curry-Imagn Images Contreras has always had a flair for the dramatic, and after spending seven seasons with the Cubs before signing with the Cardinals, emotions were high on Thursday. However, the Cubs got the final say this time as Palencia walked off the mound with a victory for his squad. The Cubs and Cardinals will meet again in eight days, this time at Wrigley Field on July 4.
