Kufra sees surge in scorpion stings, health officials warn
A senior health official has reported a sharp increase in scorpion stings in the southeastern Libyan city of Kufra, with up to ten cases recorded daily during the peak summer months—most involving children. Dr. Othman Al-Taib, Director of the Scorpion Laboratory at the Tropical Medicine Centre in Kufra, said the desert city hosts five of Libya's ten known scorpion species, three of which are highly venomous and pose a serious health threat. 'Scorpion activity intensifies as temperatures rise, especially from April to November, though the insects are present year-round,' Al-Taib told local media. He confirmed that antivenoms are available, including a high-quality French-made serum and an Indian alternative. With climate conditions contributing to the increased presence of scorpions, Al-Taib urged urgent preventive measures—particularly to safeguard children. The Tropical Medicine Centre in Kufra runs a dedicated scorpion laboratory, housing live specimens used for research and scientific monitoring. Health Tagged: scorpions Kufra
