GAZA STRIP (Palestine), June 6 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Palestinians in the central al-Rimal neighbourhood of the Gaza Strip gathered on Friday to perform Eid al-Adha prayers at Al-Kanz Mosque, which, despite being heavily damaged during Israeli airstrikes, served as the site of worship for the holiday.
Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported that the congregation marked the beginning of Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest observances in the Islamic calendar.
Al-Kanz Mosque, previously a central religious facility in the al-Rimal district, now bears visible signs of destruction, including collapsed sections and debris.

Islamic community centres key to promoting national unity says minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Islamic community centres should function as inclusive spaces that unite people from diverse backgrounds rather than merely serving as places of worship. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar emphasised their potential to nurture interfaith relations and strengthen community bonds. He highlighted their role in creating opportunities for personal growth through various programmes and activities. 'Imagine Islamic community centre as a space that nurtures interfaith relations, promotes mutual understanding, and provides opportunities for learning, skill-building, and support.' 'A place where hearts are connected, where people of diverse backgrounds feel welcomed, and where lasting bonds of friendship are built.' Mohd Na'im delivered these remarks during the launch of the Tun Razak Exchange Islamic Community Centre (TICC) in Kuala Lumpur. He noted that mosques historically served as central hubs for governance, learning, and social development throughout Islamic history. The minister stressed that modern Islamic community centres should embody this same multifaceted spirit. Community centres offering educational programmes, skills training, and welfare activities can significantly enrich society according to his statement. These initiatives embody the values of compassion and service to humanity that are central to Islamic teachings. Mohd Na'im also urged relevant authorities to expedite approval for TICC's recognition as a permanent Friday prayer venue. The centre currently serves as a temporary site for Friday prayers despite its capacity for over 1,000 worshippers. Federal Territories Mufti Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil and TRX City Sdn Bhd's chief executive officer Datuk Azmar Talib attended the launch event. – Bernama

27 Major Rivers Polluted In 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Twenty-seven rivers, or four per cent of the 672 major rivers monitored nationwide in 2024, were found to be polluted, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said that, based on a report by the Department of Environment (DOE), of the 672 rivers, 475 or 71 per cent were classified as clean, while another 170 or 25 per cent fell into the moderately polluted category. Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said that the main pollutant parameters identified included Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Ammonia Nitrogen (AN), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO). 'Overall, there are no rivers in the country at level five, which indicates severe (pollution), but several still require attention to ensure they reach a safe level. 'We want to ensure that river water is not only (suitable) for people to bathe and enjoy recreational activities but, most importantly, for consumption,' he told reporters after chairing the Special Committee to Address Deterioration of River Water Quality (JKKAS) meeting here today. Meanwhile, Fadillah said the meeting proposed that state authorities enforce new standards for urban and rural wastewater effluent discharges, based on a study by the National Water Research Institute (NAHRIM). He said it covered 11 main parameters, including pH, BOD, COD, suspended solids, oil and grease, nitrogen, mercury, colour and solid waste. Fadillah said the meeting also agreed on the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) organising a workshop to outline the standards for drainage water discharge into river basins, involving various agencies, particularly the local authorities responsible for drainage management. He also suggested that state governments adopt locally developed technology by NAHRIM, including suspended load extractors, oil and grease traps using IoT technology, and the Intriguard system for marking river reserves to prevent external pollution from entering river basins.
