Former Laker Vlade Divac got injured after falling off motorcycle
From 1989 to 1996, Vlade Divac was a fairly productive center for the Los Angeles Lakers. They drafted him in the first round of the 1989 draft following the retirement of legendary center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and he became a serviceable player for them as they rebuilt during the 1990s.
He returned to the team for one more go-around in 2004. However, a back injury limited him to 15 games that season, and he called it quits shortly afterward.
On Thursday, Divac, who is 57 years of age, reportedly broke his hip in a motorcycle incident.
Via ESPN:
"Former NBA center Vlade Divac underwent emergency surgery after breaking a hip in a fall from his motorcycle in Montenegro, doctors said Friday.
"The accident happened Thursday on a road near the Montenegrin Adriatic Sea coast. Hospital officials said Divac sustained a fracture and that an artificial hip was implanted."
Luckily, the 7-foot-1 Serbian is said to be doing OK.
"During the day, a surgical procedure was performed," said Ljubica Mitrovic, a spokeswoman of the hospital in the town of Risan. "He is in a stable general and physical condition and is under a careful supervision of the medical staff."
Divac was one of the first serviceable European players to enter the NBA. He was somewhat ahead of his time as far as his skills, as he could not only score out of the low post but also pass the ball effectively, hit perimeter jumpers and even handle the ball and run the fast break.
He was so versatile that, at the time, some felt his natural position was forward. But he continued to play at the 5 and finished with career averages of 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 blocks a game.
The Lakers traded him for the draft rights to a 17-year-old Philadelphia-area native named Kobe Bryant in 1996. Ironically, that trade almost came back to bite them, as Divac went on to become a pivotal member of those free-wheeling Sacramento Kings teams of the early 2000s that came within a fingernail of defeating L.A. in the 2002 Western Conference Finals.
Following his retirement, he accepted a job with the Lakers as a liaison to help them scout players in Europe. He was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Who is RJ Luis Jr., and why did the Boston Celtics trade for him?
Who is RJ Luis Jr., and why did the Boston Celtics trade for him? The Celtics elected to send vet reserve forward Georges Niang into the Utah Jazz cap space along with a pair of second round draft picks last week, taking back only the undrafted two way wing in the deal in order to make it the minimum trade requirements in the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. In so doing, the front office also created a bit of a log jam with their own two way players, eventually deciding to cut ties with more veteran two way forward Miles Norris with No. 57 2025 draft pick Max Shulga also signed to a two way deal and No. 46 2025 draft pick Amari Williams yet to sign any deal with Boston. The folks behind the "NESN" YouTube channel put together a clip from their "Hold My Banner" podcast that takes a closer look at the trade for Luis Jr. Check it out below! Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 22 - Ron Perry (1968-69)
The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the "New Jersey Americans". Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today. To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise's jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 23rd of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 22, which has has had a total of 31 players wear the number in the history of the team. The first of those players wearing No. 22 played in the (then) New York (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, guard alum Ron Perry. After ending his college career at Virginia Tech, Perry was picked up with the 68th overall selection (there were many more rounds in that era of the draft) of the 1967 NBA Draft by the (defunct) Baltimore Bullets. The Garrisonville, Virginia native instead signed with the ABA's (defunct) Minnesota Muskies, and also played for the (also defunct) Miami Floridians before he was dealt to New York in 1968. His stay with the team would span just 23 games before he would be dealt again, this time to the Indiana Pacers in 1969. During his time suiting up for the Nets, Perry wore only jersey No. 22 and put up 19.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.

Man United offered chance to sign another Bayern Munich defender
Manchester United are considering a repeat of last summer's transfer plan as the club weighs up a move for yet another Bayern Munich defender, according to a report from Germany. Twice bitten, not shy Matthijs de Ligt, 26, and Noussair Mazraoui, 27, were signed in a joint raid on the Allianz Arena last year to reunite the pair with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, having both previously played for the Dutch manager with Ajax. Their combined fee totalled over £60 million with add-ons – an expensive outlay but a reasonable one given the pair's experience at the highest level in European football relative to their respective ages. Both De Ligt and Mazraoui are primed for important roles this season, despite Ten Hag having been replaced by Ruben Amorim in November, as the former Sporting manager's 3-4-2-1 system employs an extra central defender – a role both players are comfortable fulfilling. De Ligt has primarily operated as the central centre-back in this system (CCB) and the Dutchman offers more athleticism than his competitor for the position, Harry Maguire. Mazraoui, typically a fullback throughout his career, has often played as one of the two centre-backs on the outside, though the Morocco international can also play as a wing-back. But United are reported to be considering a move for another Bayern defender with France international Dayot Upamecano 'on their radar,' according to Christian Falk. Upamecano on the radar Upamecano, 26, is a central defender with outstanding athleticism and high levels of technical ability. He he won multiple trophies with Bayern as well as the World Cup with France in 2018. Speaking to German outlet CFBayern, Falk reveals the 'Red Devils have included the 26-year-old on their list of priorities, as his contract is set to expire next summer.' The Bundesliga expert states Upamecano's agent, Moussa Sissoko, has 'offered his client to Premier League clubs' with 'interest' from United. 'Bayern are pushing hard to reach an agreement with Upamecano over a new deal, but as of now, there has been little or no progress. The negotiations are dragging on for a long time, and it is leaving Bayern frustrated, as surely they do not want another Leroy Sane saga to unfold.' Bayern boss Vincent Kompany is reported to consider Upamecano a key part of his starting eleven alongside new signing Jonathan Tah, so it remains to be seen whether INEOS can prise another defensive jewel from Die Roten to join Amorim's revolution at Old Trafford.
