New school uniform rules with parents set to save money from September
The Labour Party government has now urged schools to slash uniform costs ahead of a major rule change, with Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson appealing to schools to reduce the number of branded uniform items parents are required to buy.
From September 2026 onwards, schools in England will only be permitted to require parents to purchase three branded uniform items, plus an optional branded tie for secondary schools.
This new move should help them save money amid the ongoing Cost of Living Crisis, with Ms Phillipson pushing for change before the school bell rings once more in September. In other news, headteacher spotted a pupil stealing from school, but the explanation is heartbreaking.

According to Birmingham Live, schools can currently force parents to buy an unlimited number of branded uniform items, which can prove costly for struggling families.
Meanwhile, Ms Phillipson told The Sun she is pressing schools to implement these changes immediately, before the new term starts, to prevent families being "pushed into hardship".
Ms Phillipson told the publication: "These figures lay bare the stark realities facing hard-working parents, with expensive branded school wear pushing families into debt. It's a disgrace that families are being forced to choose between food, heating and the back-to-school shop, and it needs to stop.
"School uniform is a national tradition in this country, and it isn't going anywhere, but buying it shouldn't push families into hardship. That is why I am calling on schools ahead of the new term, urging them to start implementing these changes now. Parents know, and Sun readers know, this is common sense stuff. You don't need a posh blazer to learn your times tables."
She continued: "Cutting the cost of school uniforms is just one of the ways we're putting more money in parents' back pockets as part of our Plan for Change for the country. From free breakfast clubs to half a million more kids getting free school meals, I'm absolutely determined to make sure where a young person grows up does not determine what they go on to achieve."
The Department for Education has stated that these measures would save families £50 per child, based on the assumption that they bought all their clothes from specialist uniform shops.

‘Brazen' Labour councillor ‘manipulated' and sexually abused 15-year-old
A 'brazen' Labour councillor who 'manipulated' and sexually abused a 15-year-old girl has been jailed. David Graham, who represented the Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss Villages ward on Fife council in Scotland, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison after being convicted of having sex with a child aged 15. The offences happened over several months in 2023 in Edinburgh and Fife after the pair met socially. The 43-year-old, who was suspended from the Labour Party two years ago, denied the charge but was convicted by a majority verdict. He was released on bail following his conviction, and has also been disqualified by the Labour-run council. The court heard that a 'romantic relationship' involving a 25-year age gap developed shortly after the girl's 15th birthday and became 'more intimate'. 'Undermined the trust' Sheriff Robert More described the offences, between February and August 2023, as an 'escalating and brazen course of sexual behaviour' and said Graham had 'undermined the trust' placed in him by the community. Graham, who was 40 or 41-years-old at the time of the offending, was 'well-known' in the area and perceived as 'a hard-working and diligent local representative', the court heard. The sheriff said the single charge amounted to three offences, including engaging in sex activity with an older child, along with evidence of 'planning' to avoid detection. He imposed a sentence of 27 months and said that the case was of 'higher culpability'. Graham will also be on the sex offenders register for 10 years. Sheriff More, sentencing, said: 'The conduct took place at a variety of locations, including the home you shared with your then partner. You were aware of how old the girl was and had been warned by her family to stay away from her. 'Laws are intended to protect children from those who would exploit their vulnerability. There is nothing to suggest she was physically harmed or evidence that she has suffered psychological harm. In my view, there is a real risk your offending will have such a psychological impact.' 'Avoid being recognised' He said there was evidence of instances in which Graham tried to 'remove [himself]' from the local area 'to avoid being recognised'. Riot police were called to a mass protest outside Graham's home, involving around 100 people and leading to three arrests, the court heard. His parents' home was also targeted. Chris Sneddon, acting for Graham, said there was the 'potential for community reprisal' but urged a non-custodial sentence be imposed. He said that Graham continues to deny the charge but 'understands the impact the type of behaviour can have on the victim of such behaviour', the court heard. 'A manipulative individual' Detective Inspector Graham Watson, said: 'Graham is a manipulative individual who groomed and sexually abused his teenage victim. He was well-known and in a position of power when the offending took place.' Helen Nisbet, the Procurator Fiscal for Tayside, Central and Fife, said: 'David Graham saw an opportunity to systematically groom and sexually abuse a vulnerable young girl, who had the right to be safe in his company. 'He cynically and deliberately took advantage of an unbalanced power dynamic to commit these offences over the course of several months.' 'Disqualified from serving as a councillor' Following the sentencing, David Ross, the Fife council leader, said: 'This case has shocked us all and I am pleased that this means David Graham will now be disqualified from serving as a councillor on Fife council.' 'David Graham should have resigned as a councillor as soon as he was convicted, if not before, and his disqualification will be welcomed across the council.' The authority said a by-election would be held in Graham's former ward in the next few months. An NSPCC spokesman said: 'Graham held a position of trust and authority in the community, which he chose to exploit to groom and sexually abuse a vulnerable teenage girl. She has shown immense courage in helping to ensure that Graham faced justice for his crimes.'

Britain's biggest threat isn't Starmer, but the next Labour leader
If the pressures and realities of being in Government seem to have overwhelmed and surprised a large number of Labour MPs, spare a thought for lowly members of the party. Being in office has always been an uncomfortable experience for the comrades. Mario Cuomo's famous dictum that 'we campaign in poetry and we govern in prose' never quite hit home with them. As the writer John O'Farrell once eloquently put it, being a Labour Party member while Labour is in office is like being a David Bowie fan when 'The Laughing Gnome' was in the charts. But these days the conflict between loyalty to party and loyalty to Socialism (always with a capital S) is keener than ever. The political world is in a state of flux and party members are being tested beyond the point of endurance by current government policy, as the recent Survation poll of more than 1000 party members demonstrates. More than seven in 10 paid-up Labour members said the Government was wrong to proscribe Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. An even larger proportion – 84 per cent – opposes the Government's continued support of the two-child benefit cap. How much more comfortable it was when the party was in opposition! When all members had to do to feel good about themselves was to complain about those evil Tories and talk of the blessed sunlit uplands of the New Jerusalem that would be established by Socialism one day. That's the thing about Labour: electoral victories are barely celebrated for a single day. And then the betrayals get underway by sell-out ministers and everyone starts complaining about the Government again. While most people recognise that being in Government inevitably means tough and unpopular decisions, Labour Party members are generally not among those people. Pontification is so much more appealing than actual governing and legislating. And so Keir Starmer – and particularly his MPs, those in Government as well as on the back benches – should be encouraged by this latest survey. For if his own party, the party that elected Corbyn as party leader twice, is unhappy with him, he must be doing something right. These are the people who think Ed Miliband – he of the Ed Stone, the 2015 general election result, the bacon sarny and the scourge of the oil industry – is the best performing Cabinet minister while Liz Kendall, who tried to rein in welfare spending and wants to get people off benefits and into jobs, is the least popular. I well remember the unexpectedly robust response I received on the doorstep in one of the poorest council estates in my former constituency, after the then Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition Government introduced the two-child cap on welfare benefits. I had expected local residents to be angry and resentful at this policy. Instead, aside from one or two directly affected, there was a general support for the notion that if better off couples had to limit their families to sizes that they could afford, less well-off families should do the same. That was an eye-opener. And Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, seems to have grasped the reality of that even as most Labour members continue to demand that those in work should pay higher taxes to fund larger families of those out of work. Those are the hard choices and harder realities that governments have to contend with on a daily basis. It's a reality that Labour Party rank-and-file members would rather not confront; that is not, after all, what they joined the party for. Perhaps if Corbyn and his co-leader Zarah Sultana ever get round to forming and naming their new Left-wing party, many of those unhappily remaining in Labour will make the switch to a party more willing to tell them what they want to hear. In the meantime, Starmer needs to imbue in his MPs a sense of discipline and a belief that the hard decisions made today will start to pay dividends when the next general election hovers into view.

Fife councillor jailed for sexually abusing teenage girl
A disgraced Fife councillor who was found guilty of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl has been jailed for 27 months. David Graham, 43, was convicted of having sex with the teenager following a trial at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court in July. The court heard how his abuse began after the pair met socially. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said Graham preyed on the youngster at various locations, including his office, house, and in his car over a six-month period in 2023. A police investigation was launched after a member of the public became concerned about his behaviour towards the girl. Graham, who was suspended from the Labour Party two years ago and has since been expelled following his conviction, continues to deny any wrongdoing. After being released on bail while awaiting sentencing, riot police were called to a mass protest outside his home. The court heard his parents' home had also been targeted. On Tuesday, Sheriff Robert More branded the offences between February and August 2023 an "escalating and brazen course of sexual behaviour" and said Graham had "undermined the trust" placed in him by the community. The court heard that a "romantic relationship" developed after the girl's 15th birthday, which became "more intimate" and involved a 25-year age gap. "He cynically and deliberately took advantage of an unbalanced power dynamic to commit these offences over the course of several months. "Graham has now been held accountable following this prosecution, and I give thanks to the victim for giving evidence which helped secure this conviction. "I would urge anyone affected by similar offending to report it when you feel ready." Fife Council said a by-election will be held in Ward 22 (Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss Villages) in the next few months. Councillor David Ross, the local authority's leader, said: "This case has shocked us all and I am pleased that this means David Graham will now be disqualified from serving as a councillor on Fife Council. "I want to pay tribute to the bravery of the young person involved in this case in coming forward and hope that today's sentencing goes some way towards her healing process.
