Aaron-Wooi Yik snap early-exit streak with China Open win

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik finally returned to winning ways after successfully navigating through their opening hurdle at the China Open today. The Malaysian pair battled past Denmark's Rasmus Kjær-Frederik Sogaard 21-19, 21-15 -- the same duo who had ousted them in the opening round of last month's Indonesia Open - to end a frustrating run of back-to-back early exits. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who also suffered a shock defeat to compatriots Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi at the Japan Open last week, showed far greater composure this time to exact revenge and extend their head-to-head record against the Danes to 4-2 from six meetings. The victory is a much-needed boost for the 2022 world champions, who had been in red-hot form earlier this season -- reaching four consecutive finals between April and May, and winning three titles in the process: the Asia Championships, Thailand Open and Singapore Open. Aaron-Wooi Yik are now expected to face France's Popov brothers, Toma Junior and Christo, in the last 16 as they look to rediscover their rhythm and mount another deep run in this Super 1000 tournament.

Soon Huat-Shevon crash out in China Open first round

THE hopes of national mixed doubles pair of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie of reaching the final of China Open Badminton Championship were dashed in the 2025 edition when they crashed out in the first round in Changzhou today. The world number six was shown the way out by Indonesian pair, Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu in 21-18, 22-24, 15-21 over an hour. This is Soon Huat-Shevon's second defeat to the same pair, apart from failing to retain their runner-up position in the tournament in the 2024 edition. Meanwhile, the national professional men's doubles, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, had to forget their desire to defend the championship title when they were shocked by a defeat to the world's 40th ranked pair from South Korea, Kang Min Hyuk-Kim Dong Ju 15-21, 21-15, 21-17 in 56 minutes. It was a double defeat for the world's third-ranked pair, who also failed to defend their Japan Open title when they lost in the final last Sunday. - Bernama

Setback to Sze Fei-Izzuddin's bid for top 4 seeding at World Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani's bid to arrive at next month's World Championships in Paris as a top-four seeded pair suffered a dent following the latest world rankings update today. The Malaysians slipped two rungs to world No. 3 in men's doubles, with South Korea's Kim Won Ho–Seo Seung Jae taking over the top spot after denying them a successful title defence at the Japan Open last week. Compatriots Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik remained unmoved at No. 2 despite also falling early in Tokyo. The pressure is now squarely on Sze Fei–Izzuddin to bounce back at this week's China Open in Changzhou — their final tournament before the seedings are finalised for the World Championships, based on the Aug 8 ranking. Anything short of a deep run could see them tumbling out of the top four, a scenario that would severely compromise their title aspirations in Paris. A seeding outside the top four could pit them against the tournament favourites as early as the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, other Malaysian men's doubles pairs also saw positive movements. Ong Yew Sin–Teo Ee Yi, last week's surprise semi-finalists in Tokyo, climbed two spots to No. 28, while quarter-finalists Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub–Tan Wee Kiong inched up one place to No. 25. Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun continue to be Malaysia's third-highest ranked pair at No. 7, followed by Wan Arif Junaidi–Yap Roy King at No. 24. In women's doubles, world No. 3 Pearly Tan–M. Thinaah maintained their position despite finishing runners-up in Tokyo. The in-form duo are now within striking distance of soon-to-part ways No. 2 Chiharu Shida–Nami Matsuyama of Japan, and will have another opportunity to push higher at the China Open. Go Pei Kee–Teoh Mei Xing are the next best ranked Malaysians at No. 22. In the men's singles, Leong Jun Hao dropped two more rungs to No. 26 after a first-round exit in Tokyo, while Lee Zii Jia continued his downward slide due to inactivity, falling from No. 27 to No. 33 in the real-time rankings. Zii Jia, however, holds a protected ranking of No. 9 — activated in late March — which allows him entry into World Tour events during his comeback period. There were no changes in the mixed doubles standings for Malaysia. Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei continue to lead the charge at No. 4, followed by Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Lai Jemie (No. 6) and Hoo Pang Ron–Cheng Su Yin (No. 13), keeping Malaysia well-represented with three pairs inside the world's top 15.
