Indonesian police bust international baby trafficking ring, rescue six infants

AFP photo JAKARTA (July 16): Indonesian police have busted an international baby trafficking syndicate believed to have been operating since 2023, rescuing six infants and arresting 12 suspects in a major cross-province operation. Five of the babies were found in Pontianak, West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, and taken to West Java police headquarters, while another was rescued from the Greater Jakarta area, police said. West Java police spokesperson Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan said the suspects played various roles within the syndicate, including recruiting unborn babies, caring for them, and forging documents such as birth certificates and passports. 'The group also arranged the transport of the babies, who were allegedly intended for illegal adoption in Singapore,' he said in a statement. Police seized forged identity documents, passports and ownership papers during the arrests. According to West Java's General Criminal Investigations director Commissioner Surawan, one of the suspects had disclosed that five of the rescued babies had been scheduled to be sent to Singapore using fake paperwork. He also said the biological mothers were paid amounts ranging from IDR 11 million to IDR 16 million (approximately US$740 to US$1,070). The investigation, which began after a parent reported a suspected baby abduction, led police to uncover a wider trafficking network involving babies believed to have originated from various parts of West Java. Police are now working with the Indonesian National Police's International Relations Division to investigate possible cross-border trafficking links. – Bernama baby indonesia police Singapore trafficking West Java

Indonesian police seek to polish image with new video platform amid public distrust

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox The Indonesian National Police have launched several digital initiatives aimed at improving their public image, including a new video-sharing platform called Policetube. However, critics argue that these efforts fall short of addressing the deeper issues underlying the erosion of public trust. The Policetube platform, unveiled recently by the force's Public Relations Division, showcases institutional achievements and public service messages. Modelled after Youtube, the site features a dark-gray interface with gold colours, aligned with the police's visual identity.

Police draft in real life Robocops that can diffuse bombs and free hostages

Drug smugglers beware. Indonesia has a new unit of robot police officers to strike fear in the hearts of even the most hardened criminals. The Indonesian National Police, or Polri, paraded 25 emotionless police robots as well as their dogs through the streets of Jakarta, which has some of the strictest anti-drug laws in the world. The real-life Robocops, dressed in a Polri uniform and wearing black berets, can diffuse bombs, negotiate hostage situations and even carry out search and rescue operations. The humanoid robots could be used for facial recognition, as well as monitoring for traffic violations in the country with one of the strictest anti-drug laws in the world. Canine officers will take on duties much like regular police dogs, like detecting dangerous materials. Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, head of Indonesian police public relations, said: 'The presence of various robots, including dog-shaped and humanoid ones, reflects the modernisation of Polri.' Nugroho said the Indonesian police force needed to keep up with efforts made by several other countries, including some in Southeast Asia. He said Thailand had introduced humanoid police robots, while Singapore developed cyborg cockroaches to help with search and rescue operations. He added that Chinese police officers have already trialled humanoid robots for patrols, while the authorities in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, used them for driving license-related services. He further revealed that Polri has incorporated the use of robots into its 2025–2045 Strategic Plan, with a budget already allocated for robot dogs in 2026. More Trending 'Robot dogs have the same use as K9 dogs [but they] are more efficient since they do not require food or trained handlers and can endure extreme weather,' he added. The 79th Indonesian National Police parade was given the theme of 'the Republic of Indonesia Police for the community', hoping that the Indonesian authorities become increasingly loved by the people. The anniversary event includes the attendance of the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. These robots included in the parade were made in collaboration with a company in China and developed in Indonesia. ‘Overwhelming': Plea after Bali shooting

The wife of Bali shooting victim Zivan Radmanovic is still in Indonesia, a close friend has revealed in a desperate public plea for support. Mr Radmanovic, 32, was shot and killed at a villa at the Badung Regency north of Kuta on Saturday. His wife Jazmyn Gourdeas was in the villa but not physically injured. A second man Sanar Ghanim, 34, was also shot during the attack. An image shows Mr Ghanim being tended to by paramedics with his feet and face covered in blood. Now, a fundraiser has been launched for Ms Gourdeas, with close family friend Jamie Lee revealing new details about the aftermath of the tragedy. 'This sudden and devastating loss has left Jazmyn a single mother to six beautiful children, aged from just 9 months to 13 years,' the fundraiser states. 'While only married for just under a year, the couple were deeply in love and shared a family together. A GoFundMe has been set up for Jazmyn Gourdeas after the shooting of Zivan Radmanovic. Ms Lee said Ms Gourdeas remained in Indonesia as the investigation into the killing progresses, and her family were taking care of the children in Australia. The financial burden facing Ms Gourdeas would now be 'overwhelming', she added. 'Zivan was a kind, hardworking man devoted to his family,' she said. 'His loss leaves a huge hole in their lives, but together, we can help Jazmyn and her children find a way forward. 'Your donation – no matter the size – will help provide stability, care and comfort to a grieving family facing an uncertain future.' As of Wednesday morning, $13,800 had been raised from a $20,000 target. Indonesian police have arrested two people over the shooting of Mr Radmanovic and Mr Ghanim. Supplied Credit: Supplied Media organisation Nusa Bali reported that one of the alleged offenders was arrested in Jakarta, while another person was captured abroad and was being taken to the Indonesian capital. Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo held a press conference in Bali on Tuesday at the Jembrana Police Headquarters. 'Regarding the shooting involving Australian citizens, I have received a report from the Bali Police Chief. One suspect has been secured in Jakarta, and another is on the way from overseas,' the police chief told media. 'A more detailed statement will be released by Bali Police. 'What I can say for now is that this case was solved through co-operation between our Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim), Immigration, and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).'. General Sigit did not release any information about identity of the alleged shooters but told media that Bali Regional Police would provide more detailed information. It was reported there were two alleged offenders who might be Australian and the gunmen used firearms during the attack. It was not clear what the motive was behind the attack. Bali Regional Police Chief Daniel Adityajaya said his department would provide an update later. 'Once the evidence and documentation are complete, Bali Police will issue an official statement to the public and media,' he said.
