Distraught Shai Hope admits Windies 'never gave themselves a chance' vs Australia

India Today6 days ago
West Indies skipper Shai Hope was left disappointed with the team's performance after their loss in the final T20I of the series against Australia. Windies were blanked 5-0 by the Australian side in the T20I series, as they failed to show up with both bat and ball in the majority of their games. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Hope said that the team never really gave themselves a chance to succeed in the series.advertisementThe loss in the T20I series comes on the back of a terrible 0-3 loss in the red-ball format, where the hosts were blown away by Australia's pace battery. In the Test series, Windies recorded their lowest ever innings total — 27 — in the final Test match of the series.Known for their prowess in the shortest format of international cricket, the hosts did not fare much better in the T20I leg of the bilateral. Despite having a squad packed with big hitters and T20 specialists, they looked out of sorts throughout the series, lacking discipline with the ball and consistency with the bat. Australia, on the other hand, were clinical and exploited every weakness and showed far more intent and composure. The final T20I in St Kitts saw yet another dominating display from Australia, ending the tour on a high.
West Indies captain Shai Hope admitted that the team didn't perform well with the bat, which essentially led to their downfall in all 5 games."Don't think we put up a good batting display. We came up against a quality opposition in Australia but as a batting group we didn't give ourselves the best chance. We were always one step behind the eight ball, but have to commend the bowling effort. Just didn't happen for us today. In the Caribbean, chasing is always better due to the dew and wind factor. But that's not something I can control. We have some clarity in the bowling unit, we executed better. We'll put this behind us and look ahead to the Pakistan series,' the Windies skipper said.Hope also mentioned that conditions in the Caribbean usually favour chasing due to the dew and wind, but the hosts never really got the chance after losing every single toss in the series.Legends Seek West Indies' RevivalThe crisis in West Indies cricket has seen emergency meetings being held by the management. The cricket body of the group of nations has sought the help of former cricketers to revive the standards set by the older generations. Legendary cricketer Clive Lloyd has already put his hand up and said that he is ready to provide every help possible to rescue the dwindling form of the cricketing team.advertisement"We have to examine all aspects of West Indies cricket from grassroots to the international level, everything must be looked at closely and carefully. West Indies cricket is an institution. It has given so much to the people of this region and we must do all we can to revive it. I'm always available to help in any way. How we can marry the ideas we have with what is necessary and have healthy discussion on the way we move forward, that's what I'm thinking. It has been nearly 100 years since we have been playing top-class [Test] cricket, and we have to get it right," Lloyd said in a statement to ESPNcricinfo. The West Indies, meanwhile, will return to the drawing board. They look out of sorts and will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their upcoming white-ball series against Pakistan.- EndsTrending Reel

Watch Chris Woakes come out to bat with fractured shoulder in 5th Test against India at The Oval

Chris Woakes and Anil Kumble In a dramatic scenario, English fast bowler Chris Woakes came out to bat with fractured hand tied in a sling in the fifth test against India in Oval. Netizens recalled the heroics of Indian Spinner Anil Kumble. Chris Woakes, who injured his shoulder while fielding on the opening day of the ongoing Test match, may still play a role with the bat as England and India head into the final day of the series. Although the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has stated that Woakes will take no further part in the match, he was seen practicing one-handed batting in the indoor nets on Sunday and later changed into his whites, preparing to bat at number 11 if required. England require 35 runs to win, while India need three or four wickets to draw the series, depending on whether Woakes is fit to bat. Woakes remains ready despite injury and uncertainty Speaking at the post-day press conference, Joe Root said, 'He's all-in, like the rest of us. It has been that kind of series, where guys have had to put bodies on the line. Hopefully, it does not get to that. But he had some throwdowns in here [the indoor school] at one point, and he is ready if needed... He is desperate to do what it takes.' Root added that Woakes is dealing with considerable pain. 'Clearly, he is in a huge amount of pain having done what he has done. It just shows, as we have seen from other guys in this series – Rishabh Pant batting with a broken foot, guys taking all sorts of blows here and there – but it means a huge amount to him.' Uncertainty over Woakes' availability for rest of summer England have not disclosed full details of Woakes' injury, and further scans may be conducted after the match. He is not expected to feature for the remainder of the Test summer and remains doubtful for the Ashes opener in Perth on November 21. His participation in the rest of that series is also uncertain, considering his injury and track record in Australian conditions. Commenting on Woakes' determination, Root said, 'It just shows the character and the person that he is willing to put his body on the line like that for England, and hopefully – well, hopefully he does not have to, but if it does come to that – get us across the line and win us an incredible series.'

Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy delivers Test cricket classic as records tumble

Friday, June 20, 2025, saw the beginning of a rebranded Test rivalry as India and England kicked off the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Leeds. Fast forward to Sunday, August 4, the gripping five-match series culminates in London. Each Test extended to the final session of the final day, underscoring the razor-thin margins and unrelenting fight. Banter, controversy, and unmatched intensity From heated on-field banters to debates over ball changes and even questions raised against umpiring, the series was far from tranquil. Yet, at its core, it was about Test cricket at its best—players pushing their limits, contesting every inch, and rewriting record books along the way. Indian batters set the stage ablaze India scored 3,809 runs—second only to Australia's 3,877 in the 1989 Ashes. Combined series aggregate was the second-highest ever after 7,221 runs in the 1993 Ashes. India registered eight 300+ totals and eight 350+ scores, a new record. Hit 470 boundaries—the most by any team in a Test series. Notched up 12 individual centuries, India's highest in any series. Five batters scored over 400 runs—achieved only thrice before. Gill (754), Rahul, Jadeja each crossed 500 runs—joint-most in any series. Gill's 754 runs: second-highest by a Test captain, beating Gooch's 752 (1990). Jadeja's 516: highest by an Indian at No. 6 or lower; also six fifty-plus scores. Jadeja's run tally in England at No. 6 or lower (1,131) broke Clive Lloyd's overseas record. Akash Deep's 66: third-highest by an Indian nightwatchman. Jaiswal's 118 included 94 runs behind square off-side—most since 2003. Root and Brook steal the show for England Root's 24 Test hundreds in England: most by any batter in one country. Overall 39 Test centuries: fourth-highest of all time. 13 tons vs India: ties Gavaskar's tally vs WI; only Bradman (19 vs Eng) has more. Brook: Fastest to 10 Test tons in 70 years—just 50 innings. Root now has 13 fifty-plus scores in fourth innings—joint-most in Test history. Brook's 91-ball century in the 5th Test: seventh-fastest in a fourth innings. 21 centuries in the series: equals 1955 WI-Australia record. Nine batters with 400+ runs: a new record for any Test series. 19 century partnerships: equals all-time record. Root now involved in 85 century stands, behind only Dravid (88) and Tendulkar (86). 100 Test tons at The Oval for England—second only to Lord's (141).

Former England Cricketer In Awe Of India: 'Most Exciting Series Since 2005...'

Last Updated: India secured a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval as Monty Panesar praised the series as the best since 2005 Ashes. After India secured a thrilling victory at The Oval, achieving a dramatic 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, former England spinner Monty Panesar praised their determination and labelled the series as the most exciting Test contest since the iconic 2005 Ashes between England and Australia, considered the best in Ashes history. Pacer Mohammed Siraj delivered an impressive five-wicket haul as India produced a sensational four-wicket burst on a tense final morning at The Oval to beat England by six runs and level the series. 'It's been a famous victory for India. They played brilliant, brilliant cricket. And yesterday, we kind of thought when Joe Root and Harry Brook were batting that this was out of their reach. But the conditions this morning obviously favoured India with the seam positions, and the key was that they didn't take the new ball. And with the old ball, Siraj was amazing, and Krishna, as well, got that length a bit fuller. And it's a famous victory, probably the most exciting series since 2005, between England and Australia," Panesar wasquoted as saying to IANS on Monday. 'And I think in the future, we will see more five-Test series between England and India. And the excitement, everything has been absolutely brilliant. And we talk about, well, you know, how good England and India were. I think India probably played the better cricket. But overall, it's been a brilliant, brilliant Test series between England and India,' he added. Both teams entered Day 5 with victory within reach. Resuming from 339/6, England needed 35 runs to win while India required four wickets for a miraculous win. On the final day of this captivating Test series, Siraj continued his exceptional form from day four, taking 5-104 in 30.1 overs to secure a memorable victory for India. Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, who took 4-126 in 27 overs, joined forces to ensure England lost their remaining four wickets for 28 runs, providing a fitting conclusion to the series with a bowling performance for the ages. This incredible win in the fifth Test is also India's narrowest victory in their history of playing Tests. Siraj, who was the only pacer to play all matches of the series, received the Player of the Match award for his determined display in the deciding Test, in the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
