MBDK rolls out comprehensive clean up strategy
MBDK Mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said the steps include the establishment of the Klang District Cleanliness Task Force to coordinate cleaning strategies, strengthen enforcement and encourage community participation.
He said the council is placing particular focus on key areas such as the royal protocol roads, the city centre, tourist spots, major thoroughfares, the Port Klang Cruise Terminal and riverbanks.
'A short-term cleanliness action plan has also been developed to enhance the implementation of cleaning programmes in a more structured, systematic and targeted manner,' he said at the River Cleaning Programme held at the Royal Selangor Yacht Club today.
Abd Hamid said the proposed Klang River Clean-Up 2025 will be implemented in phases to address water pollution and floating waste.
'The total estimated cost exceeds RM4 million, including periodic maintenance over several months, reflecting MBDK's strong commitment to long-term cleanliness efforts.
'The council also allocates nearly RM100 million annually for solid waste management and public cleaning in Klang. However, cleanliness is not the sole responsibility of local authorities. It is a collective duty that must be shared by all,' he said.
Abd Hamid noted that today's programme was part of MBDK's efforts in support of the Selangor Ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's call to improve the cleanliness of the district, particularly at the river estuary.
He added that the area around the Royal Selangor Yacht Club was selected for its strategic location, which is the final stretch of the river before it flows into the Strait of Malacca, an area previously polluted by substantial waste accumulation.
A total of 500 volunteers from state agencies, fishermen's associations and non-governmental organisations took part in the clean-up, using 30 sampan boats to cover a 22-kilometre stretch of the river estuary.

'She is just as passionate as I am.' Abd Hamid said putting up the flags for National Day serves as a reminder – to him and others – of the struggles and sacrifices that built the nation. The grandfather of 12 said he has been carrying out this tradition for more than 15 years – a habit rooted in his days as a soldier, when discipline, respect for the country, and unity were instilled in him. 'Flying the flag is not just about decoration. It is about remembering our history, our struggles, and the sacrifices made by those before us,' he said. As he watches the Jalur Gemilang flutter in the breeze, Abd Hamid says he will continue the tradition for as long as he is able to. 'We may not be able to do grand things for the country, but small acts like these can keep the spirit burning.'

Bereaved family receives Simpan SSPN payout
PUTRAJAYA: The family of the late Poovan Arumugam, 52, a government officer who died of a heart attack in June, on Tuesday received benefits from Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (Simpan SSPN) savings and takaful protection. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who led the visit to the family home under National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN)'s Ziarah Kasih Simpan SSPN programme, said the payout demonstrated how Simpan SSPN could ease the burden of families facing unexpected loss. "This is the benefit of saving in Simpan SSPN. Even though the deposits made did not reach the total amount received today, the takaful coverage ensures that the family is protected in times of hardship." Also present during the visit were PTPTN chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim, PTPTN chief executive Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid, and Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) director Prof Harshita Aini Haroon. Poovan, who had opened accounts under both Simpan SSPN Prime and Plus for himself and his three children, left behind his wife, V. Sivagami, 49, and their children aged 10, 15 and 19. His eldest is already pursuing studies at a local university. Under his accounts, the family received RM103,822.56 in total, comprising RM4,822.56 from Simpan SSPN Prime and RM99,000 from Simpan SSPN Plus. Zambry said the ministry's immediate priority was to ensure the children's education was not disrupted. "What is most important is to guarantee the continuity of the children's education." He added that Sivagami was highly qualified, holding a master's degree in education and a diploma in early childhood education from Universiti Malaya. "With her background, we will also consider how she might be supported, so she can continue to provide for her family while ensuring her children's future is secure." Zambry said the case underscored the wider value of Simpan SSPN, which not only offers tax relief, matching grants and competitive dividends, but also provides takaful protection that can make a significant difference to families in times of loss. "This is one example of how planning ahead, even with small monthly commitments, can leave behind a safety net," he said. "It is a reminder to all parents to take advantage of such schemes to secure their children's education."

Landowners urged to evict squatter or risk legal action

Those with vacant land around the State Capital have been asked be more mindful about the presence of squatters on their property and to deal with such unwanted occupants accordingly. A spokesman for City Hall's Enforcement Department said the onus was on landowners to have the encroachers evicted. 'Property-owners, who can't be bothered chasing out the trespassers, risk being compounded as much as RM500 under our (Building) By-laws 1951 (Amendment 1987),' he said. 'This action can be taken because of the illegal structures, including the shanties, which have come up on their land.' He said legal proceedings could be initiated against repeat offenders. 'If the matter is taken to court and they are found guilty, a fine for as much as RM 5,000 can be imposed on them.' Advertisement 'Those convicted may also find themselves liable to a further fine of RM100 fine for every day during which the offence persists.' The spokesman was responding to feedback about a squatter colony which was forming in the hillside off Mile 3½ Jalan Tuaran. A Likas rate-payer spokeout about the haphazard disposal of the garbage on the slope saying that it was having a negative impact on the wellbeing of condominium-owners at Radiant Maisonette. Many of her neighbours had developed coughs from inhaling the smoke and toxic fumes given off when this waste was openly incinerated, according to her. The spokesman said it was in the process of verifying the goings-on at the undeveloped property beside the condominiums on Lorong Hen Paya 5. 'We have working together with our Valuation Department, and the Lands and Survey Department, to obtain the landowner's details,' he said. 'A letter will be sent to him/ her about what has been transpiring on the vacant land.' Should the individual require, he/ she could request to conduct a joint inspection of the property together with City Hall's Enforcement team. 'If squatters are indeed found to have encroached onto the empty land, then, the owner will have to notify the trespassers to vacate the premises. 'Once the grace-period in these notices has expired, the individual can seek for our help in the clearing of his/ her land.' The spokesman stressed, however, that City Hall, and if need be the Police, could merely oversee any efforts to remove the squatters from the property.
