Uncle Shapes' debut development tourney a resounding success
The main bout in the supermiddleweight division over six rounds between Gqeberha's Aphile Baxa and Lithalethu Sodinga from Plettenberg Bay, and a four-round bout between Sibusiso Mkolo of Glenmore and Gqeberha's Asiphe Nqumatana in the featherweight division, needed the judges' scorecards.
There was nothing to write home about in the Baxa-Sodinga fight, which Baxa won by a unanimous points decision from judges Phindile Ngingi, Vuyokazi Ncata and Prince Mbambaza, with scores of 59-56, 58-56 and 60-54, respectively.
The fight between Mkolo and Nqumatana was the best bout of the tournament.
Both boxers fought like their lives depended on it.
They threw leather hammer and tong from the first bell, but it was southpaw Mkolo's ringcraft and calculated moves using the parameters of the ring that helped him throw more telling blows.
In the other bouts, all scheduled over four rounds, Gqeberha's Ayabulela Mashibhini carried too much artillery for his homeboy Siphosethu Madasi, whom he stopped in one minute and 25 seconds of the first round in their featherweight fight.
Lelethu Bolo from Gqeberha stopped Mxhoba Paraffin, also from Gqeberha, in the third round of their mini-flyweight fight.
In another mini-flyweight fight, Luzuko Jonas beat Siphosethu Qakamfana (TKO2).
Sipho Adonis of Plettenberg Bay overcame Andile Lutoli in the mini-flyweight (TKO2), and in the first bout of the afternoon, in the middleweight division, Lisakhanya Marenene, from Gqeberha, took two minutes of the second round to stop Kirkwood's Lukhanyo Kume.
An upbeat head of Uncle Shapes Boxing Promotions, Mashapi Ngcukana, said he was pleased his maiden boxing tournament had been a resounding success.
'I gave more boxers from Nelson Mandela Bay a chance to make their official entry into the professional ranks. I'm happy we had a good tournament,' Ngcukana said.

Chippa United dismantle technical team, three coaches sacked!
Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi is at it again, firing three members of his technical team after just one game. Interim coach Musa Nyatama, goalkeeper coach Thembalethu Moses and analyst Prinil Deen have all been sacked. This follows Chippa United's 4-1 loss to TS Galaxy on Tuesday where Nyatama led the team on the bench. The game also marked the first without Sinethemba Badela who left Chippa United after two games in charge as head coach. Reports suggest Badela and newly-appointed Sporting Director Sinesipho Mali had disagreements on the direction the team should take. As things stand, the Chilli Boys are placed 15th on the log with a single point from their opening three league matches. Meanwhile, former Free State Stars mentor Luc Eymael is reported to be the next coach to take over at the Gqeberha-based outfit. Proteas rally around Subrayen after bowler reported for 'chucking'
Prenelan Subrayen will undergo an independent test of his bowling action in Brisbane next week after he was reported for a suspect action during Tuesday's first ODI against Australia. Though Subrayen, who made his ODI debut in the Cairns match, is still allowed to play before the test, Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad confirmed on Thursday he will not be selected for the remaining two ODIs Down Under. 'We felt, with Subs, to create less noise, get him out of the public eye and make sure he's OK and focuses on this testing,' said Conrad. The International Cricket Council said on Wednesday match officials 'cited concerns about the legality' of Subrayen's action. According to Conrad, the officials flagged 12 deliveries from Subrayen during Tuesday's match. 'The process is to get him tested as soon as we possibly can. We're looking to do that in Brisbane, which suits everyone. We're going to the UK via Brisbane, so hopefully we get that done sooner rather than later.'

Springboks out to keep Wallabies at bay in Cape Town
When Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu fronts the media, his attacking prowess is more often than not the topic of conversation. However, in the lead-up to Saturday's Rugby Championship clash in Cape Town he had to front questions about how the Springboks would keep the Wallabies, with their tails up, at bay. The Boks failed to do so at Ellis Park last weekend as Joe Schmidt's team beat their opponents' rush defence, a hostile crowd, the altitude and the odds. They buried the Boks in a 14-minute blitz from which the much-fancied home team could not recover. The Wallabies' 38 points was their highest match-day tally against the Boks in 14 years. The Boks may have to perform what Aussie performer Rolf Harris described in his ditty Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport. 'We have a defensive system where we apply pressure on the opposition and sometimes you have to concede a few metres on the edges,' said Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who is among the substitutes for Saturday's Test 'It is something we know about and nothing new to us. We haven't focused on it too much. There were system errors leading up to these bridge passes that caught us in those positions, so those are things we looked at fixing.
