MUSCAT: The Al Hinai Coding Initiative, spearheaded by tech educator Mohammed al Hinai, is igniting a passion for programming among children across Oman. With more than 5,000 trainees and an inclusive approach that reaches even the remotest corners of the country, the initiative is fast becoming a national model for creative and impactful tech education.
A pioneering developer of educational programmes since 2006, Al Hinai was inspired by the BBC micro:bit initiative launched in 2015, which aimed to introduce coding to over one million children globally. Building on this vision, he crafted an entirely homegrown curriculum tailored to Oman's youth — an approach that emphasises learning through real-world challenges and hands-on application.
'What makes this initiative truly special,' says Al Hinai, 'is that it's built entirely from the ground up. The curriculum, activities and learning paths are all designed to make programming fun, accessible and deeply impactful. Programming becomes a form of expression, not just a technical skill.'
What sets the Al Hinai Coding Initiative apart is its custom-designed educational framework, incorporating original programmes, structured learning activities and a progressive methodology that ensures children not only understand coding concepts, but also apply them creatively.
These workshops are offered free of charge through Al Hinai's mobile coding lab, a travelling classroom that has reached students from Musandam to Salalah.
Feedback from teachers and parents has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the initiative's ability to keep children engaged in meaningful learning and laying a strong foundation for future academic and professional pursuits in science and technology.
Al Hinai has also taken on the BBC's advanced 28-station programming challenge, placing him among the few Arab educators globally to tackle this prestigious benchmark.
His educational contributions have even earned global recognition — the official BBC micro:bit website featured his original explanation of dice programming, showcasing his credibility and innovative teaching approach to a global audience.
'As we move into the summer,' Al Hinai adds, 'we're expanding our reach with intensive workshops across new regions. Advanced sessions are also planned for returning students to deepen their skills and foster a long-term relationship with technology.'

MUSCAT - InvestOman, the Sultanate's flagship investment promotion agency, has announced the finalization of agreements paving the way for the launch of Oman's first aviation simulation centre – another key building block in positioning the country as a regional aviation hub. The Evolve Flight Simulation Training Centre, developed by aviation training startup Evolve Flight Training Services (EFTS), will be established in Madinat Al Irfan – a new urban district in Muscat – to provide cutting-edge pilot training services. Unveiling the project, InvestOman said: 'The Sultanate of Oman is taking a strategic step in the field of aviation training with the launch of the Evolve Flight Simulation Training Centre — the first advanced facility of its kind in the country, with an investment of USD 25.3 million and support from both local and international partners.' 'This project comes in response to growing regional demand, with forecasts indicating that GCC countries will require over 2,500 pilots annually by 2040, alongside an 87% increase in demand for simulation-based training since 2022,' the agency stated in a post on Thursday. Covering an area of 4,000 m², the centre will feature a modern, three-bay simulator complex designed with eco-friendly principles — such as energy-efficient construction, green spaces, and circular water management. It will be the first centre in the region to receive LEED Platinum certification and operate entirely on solar power. Other design elements will include auditoriums, pilot lounges, cafeterias, and digitally enabled classroom and briefing zones — ensuring trainees benefit from both practical and academic support in a modern, tech-enabled setting. Separately, Evolve is also building a similar facility — but housing as many as eight simulators — at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Aerospace Hub (MBRAH) in Dubai World Central. Both centres will feature cutting-edge infrastructure and will house a sophisticated fleet of full-flight simulators, including the Airbus A320 NEO/CEO, the Boeing 737 MAX, and others, according to Evolve. Significantly, the new simulation centre in Muscat will complement Oman's expanding domestic aviation training infrastructure, which currently includes institutions such as the Oman Air Flight Training Centre and the Oman Aviation Academy. The latter, located at Sohar Airport, is Oman's premier pilot training institution and the first EASA-certified Approved Training Organization (ATO) in the region. It offers a full suite of pilot training programs, including the Integrated Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), Private Pilot Licence (PPL), and various other aviation-related courses. Its training fleet includes Diamond aircraft supported by Boeing 737 MAX simulators. MANAH, Oman /PRNewswire/ -- Shanghai Electric's (SEHK: 2727, SSE: 601727) first solar power plant in Oman, the 500MW Oman Manah-1 Solar IPP Project (the "Project"), has completed one month of smooth operations after passing all assessments and final handover. The flagship Project under the Oman Vision 2040 national blueprint for sustainable environment and clean energy will generate 1.5 billion kWh of electricity annually, cutting CO₂ emissions by 780,000 tons per year, the equivalent of taking 170,000 gasoline-powered cars off Oman's roads. Shanghai Electric provided end-to-end solutions for the Project—from design and planning, procurement and construction to long-term operation and maintenance. The integrated strategy delivered an efficient, sustainable energy system while advancing global solar technology innovation. To overcome the policy and technical challenges, Shanghai Electric partnered with France's EDF under a unique dual-track agreement to meet Oman's strict technical requirements, adopting a "split-team" approach with Chinese engineers handling solar field design, while the Oman team led substation construction. This approach resolved conflicts between international standards and local regulations. The innovative project management split the construction into 11 directly managed sections that cut timelines by 22 percent. A real-time safety reporting app resolved 924 safety risks and achieved 4 million accident-free work hours. The dynamic scheduling kept large equipment usage at 90 percent efficiency, and cross-trained workers boosted site-to-site mobility. The planning also adopted a staffing strategy of competing teams with rolling inspections at 59 project zones. The designers worked on-site during substation construction and improved oversight efficiency by 30%, while a 20-member skilled team completed wiring and terminal work in just 72 hours to accelerate medium-voltage cable installation progress. The highly efficient coordination set a new record of grid connection, with simultaneous testing, day-night shifts, and China-Oman team collaboration ensuring seamless progress. The Project team finished 59 zones in nine days, which was 21 days ahead of schedule, with 100 percent grid success, zero equipment damage, and no worker injuries. "Shanghai Electric's solution completely changed how fast we thought solar projects could connect to the grid," said Hamood Al Shuaili, the Project director. "The team showed unmatched expertise and teamwork, they're world-class engineers setting new global standards." With China's high-voltage cable technology and upgraded piling support design, the site leveling preparation workload was reduced by 80 percent, which cut the construction timeline by 60 days. A streamlined supply chain and precise procurement planning guaranteed on-time delivery, with all equipment performance exceeding targets. Furthermore, the Project has boosted local employment, strengthened energy security, and created lasting social value. With a community-focused approach, 90 percent of operations and maintenance staff are local workers, and the core technical training programs have been integrated into Oman's vocational education system, with the aim of building skills for the future.

How the UAE's young people look set to guide the AI era

This weekend, thousands of young people across the UAE will celebrate the end of one chapter in their education story. At the same time, others will be getting ready to take their studies to the next stage. What those pupils who received their A-level and GCSE exam results on Thursday share with students getting ready for their first classes at university is the reality that AI is set to play a defining role in their futures. Most school pupils and university students already know that this transformative technology is having a revolutionary effect on education, challenging and changing how they write essays, research their assignments and learn more about the world around them. The UAE is aware of this, too. In May, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, announced that AI was to be introduced as a subject across all stages of government education in the Emirates. Most school pupils and university students already know that this transformative technology is having a revolutionary effect on education This week, The National spoke to some of the 115 students who, from Monday, will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi. One of this first cohort, 18-year-old Jordanian student Islam Aldaraghmeh, said the specialist degree would help him 'understand AI on a much deeper level, a much more intuitive level', adding that he wanted to "explore how to dissect AI like a surgeon'. It is this kind of energy and curiosity that young people will bring to a future increasingly shaped by AI. Initial challenges – such as the unscrupulous use of generative AI to generate whole essays– are outweighed by the technology's immense potential. As a growing centre for AI research and adoption, the UAE is showing that instead of regarding the technology as an obstacle to be confronted, developing an education system that familiarises pupils and students with AI principles and technology empowers them to be confident in the universities and workplaces of tomorrow. This is important because young people live in a world where AI is already rewriting the rules. Job cuts and adjustments affect all industries. According to findings published in the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report this year, 41 per cent of employers around the world intend to downsize their workforce as AI automates some tasks. The good news is that out of the hundreds of large companies surveyed, 77 per cent of them say they plan to reskill and upskill their existing workers between 2025-2030 to better work alongside this new technology. By formally including AI across different educational disciplines – including the humanities – human intuition and creativity can be supported by emerging technologies, not replaced. These are weighty questions that the new undergraduates at MBZUAI will wrestle with in the years ahead. Not far behind them are those young people whose school years are now a thing of the past. What both groups learn as their 21st-century education journey continues will inform the wider, global conversation about this rapidly evolving technology in the years to come.
