Bitcoin Is Surging, but Not All Cryptocurrencies Are a Safe Investment. Here Are 3 to Avoid

Dogecoin is still a highly speculative meme coin with little chance of ever repeating its performance of 2021.
Cardano, once viewed as a high-end Ethereum challenger, is having trouble gaining traction and currently trades for less than $1.
Litecoin is still languishing well below its all-time high from 2021, and may not get its much-anticipated spot ETF until the end of 2025.
10 stocks we like better than Dogecoin ›
After a brief decline in March and April, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is back. It's now up more than 12% for the year, and hit a new all-time high of $112,000 on May 22. Historically, a rally in Bitcoin has led to a rally across the entire crypto market.
That's the good news. The bad news is that not all cryptocurrencies are going along for the ride. Here are three that I'm avoiding for now.
Even after a stunning 24% rally during the past 30 days, Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) is still down 33% for the year. And, if you zoom out, things look even more worrisome for Dogecoin.
Ever since it hit an all-time high in May 2021, this meme coin has never been the same. Dogecoin now trades for a paltry $0.21, and shows no signs of ever hitting the $1 mark. In fact, in more than a decade, Dogecoin has never traded higher than $0.74.
Moreover, the best potential catalyst for Dogecoin price appreciation in 2025 -- Elon Musk's establishment of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) -- now seems to be fading away. While there was never any link of any kind between DOGE the cryptocurrency and DOGE the government entity, the two somehow got blended together in the minds of many investors.
If exciting things are happening at DOGE, exciting things are supposed to be happening for DOGE. That's the way meme coins work -- they're all hype and buzz, but no substance.
Musk famously referred to himself as "The Dogefather" in 2021, and has hinted on social media on more than one occasion that he would be bringing big things to Dogecoin. These hints intensified after he acquired Twitter (now called X). But now we can safely put that narrative to rest.
Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) is another cryptocurrency that got a lot of buzz during the previous altcoin rally in 2020-2021. But it has also struggled to do anything during the past four years. Cardano is still trading for less than $1, years after it hit an all-time high of $3.10 in September 2021.
Granted, there are glints and glimmers of a big Cardano comeback, but I just don't see it happening anytime soon. Even Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, has admitted as much. As he sees it, Cardano is "stuck." It's just having too much difficulty gaining any sort of traction.
Cardano was supposed to be the heir apparent to Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) as the premier Layer 1 blockchain network in the world. However, it has now been passed by other blockchain rivals, including Solana (CRYPTO: SOL).
Finally, there's Litecoin (CRYPTO: LTC), which briefly reigned as the top-performing cryptocurrency of 2025. It did so on the basis of the expectation that it would become the first major cryptocurrency to get a new spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) in early 2025, similar to the ones created for Bitcoin in January 2024.
But, alas, that looks like it's not happening anytime soon. According to industry ETF watchers, the soonest that the Securities and Exchange Commission is likely to approve a spot Litecoin ETF is now fourth-quarter 2025. Unfortunately, tariff uncertainty and the resulting macroeconomic confusion could force the SEC to put off any ETF approvals for the foreseeable future.
Litecoin has been an underperformer for years. It's now trading 77% below its all-time high from May 2021. By way of comparison, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin have been soaring to new all-time highs. So, if you're absolutely salivating at the opportunity to invest in Litecoin at a "bargain" price below $100, might I suggest Bitcoin instead?
Full disclaimer: At one time or another, I've held all three of these coins in my crypto portfolio. Each time, I've been burned and disappointed. All of them have promised game-changing innovations and the potential for huge price gains. But have they delivered? No.
In fact, all three of these cryptocurrencies are trading well below their historical highs. All of them continue to underperform Bitcoin, the market bellwether. And all of them show little sign of turning things around anytime soon. As a result, you can safely avoid Dogecoin, Cardano, and Litecoin if you are looking to optimize your portfolio returns in 2025.

Business leaders are reshaping Washington and delivering for taxpayers

President Trump's historic comeback victory included a mandate from the American people to reform the federal government. The inefficiencies of our broken bureaucracy are all too apparent to everyday Americans, and it was a big reason why they hired a new administration that specifically ran on fixing the system. Americans know the problems our government faces today are urgent and require immediate action. They have watched as the federal bureaucracy has exploded in size and as their tax dollars are wasted on frivolous spending. All of us realize that maintaining our current course is no longer sustainable. We are trillions of dollars in debt, and steadily approaching a point of no return. As Americans cut costs and work tirelessly to balance their own budgets after four years of economic uncertainty, they are now rightly demanding that the federal government do the same. But like the old cliche about the definition of insanity, there is no reason to think that the same processes and personnel who have spent decades in government bureaucracies will be able to reform themselves without some outside help. The status quo won't shake up the status quo. We need an infusion of new ideas, personnel and leadership in our capital city. Specifically, we need to lean on one of America's great strengths and resources: our incredibly successful, world-leading private sector. American businesses are second to none. We need to tap into the insights, methods and expertise of our business leaders and technical experts to turn the government around. Thankfully, President Trump and his administration are doing just that. A number of the president's cabinet secretaries are Washington outsiders who bring heavyweight private sector resumes to their new roles. The same goes for key subcabinet posts. For example, President Trump's nominee to run the federal Office of Personnel Management is a venture capitalist and tech executive with a quarter century of high-stakes business leadership under his belt. The most notable place where the president has brought in fresh energy and ideas from the private sector is the Department of Government Efficiency. Everybody knows about its leader, the hugely successful and outspoken entrepreneur Elon Musk. But a wealth of other top tech talent is working away behind the scenes, helping to find new efficiencies, examples of waste to cut and opportunities to update and upgrade how our government works. The team includes the sharp, young engineers who have attracted political and press attention, but it also includes veteran executives and marquee leaders who have answered the call to serve. Tom Krause, CEO of Cloud Software Group, is helping reform the Treasury Department's ancient payment processes. Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb, is helping to digitize the tangled processes around federal retirements. All of us are lucky that such well-respected minds in business and management are helping refocus our government around stewarding funds wisely and getting results. This is a turnaround project like no other, and it needs all hands on deck. I had the privilege of serving on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee during my tenure representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I saw firsthand the misuse of federal funds, the inefficiency of the bureaucracy and the blatant waste of taxpayer dollars. But making meaningful cuts in a smart, targeted way can be tricky business. We want to crack down on waste, fraud and overreach but preserve genuinely important programs that support hardworking families, encourage innovation in key fields like energy, national security and AI, and give taxpayers a strong return for their money. Separating the wheat from the chaff takes skilled analysis and strong, outcome-driven leadership. These are not virtues for which Washington is famous. Luckily, the business world has them in spades. Despite consternation from some in the media about bringing private-sector expertise into government, this is absolutely nothing new. High-profile businesspeople have served and advised presidential administrations of both parties, bringing their fresh perspectives to bear on problems that have stumped the permanent class inside Washington. President Obama brought General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt to lead an economic advisory board, along with entrusting the executive chairman of Alphabet, Eric Schmidt, to lead a major Pentagon innovation board. President Biden staffed his Council of Advisors on Science and Technology with a whole list of private sector leaders, including from tech giants Google, Microsoft and Nvidia. President Trump and DOGE are working to fix the broken systems our government relies on. They are absolutely right to call upon our country's deep well of human capital in the form of our top business leaders to do it. The American people have spoken, and they want significant and meaningful reform. A majority of Americans support DOGE's mission to increase accountability and enact long-lasting federal reforms. Already, thanks to DOGE's efforts, billions of dollars worth of savings have been found. But if we're actually going to redirect the slow-moving shipwreck of federal waste and budget deficits, these early efforts must only be the beginning. We need to keep drawing on outside perspectives and the business world's results-driven mindset to cut through the jungle of red tape and deliver meaningful results for Americans everywhere.

Trump Questioned Extent Of Musk's DOGE Cuts, Report Says

President Donald Trump questioned the extent of the federal cuts made by billionaire adviser Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, the The Wall Street Journal reported, bringing the savings into doubt as Musk ended his short stint as special government employee this week after making controversial cuts and layoffs within the federal government. DOGE claims it has saved an estimated $175 billion through workforce reductions, grant ... More cancellations, contract cancellations. (Photo by) Trump asked, 'Was it all bull****?' according to unnamed administration officials cited by the Journal on Friday, referring to Musk's vow to cut $1 trillion in government spending. Musk reiterated the promise during an Oval Office press conference with Trump on Friday, saying he was confident DOGE will produce '$1 trillion dollars of waste and fraud reduction' over time. Musk has seemingly pushed back the deadline for the $1 trillion in savings, as the billionaire Tesla chief said in March the ambitious cuts would be completed in roughly two months. Trump's purported doubt came as Musk's time as a special government employee came to an end Friday, though he and the president have maintained he will continue visiting the White House and acting as a friend and adviser. Forbes asked for comment from the White House and Musk, the latter of whom did not respond to the Journal's request for comment Friday. The Musk-led department says it has saved an estimated $175 billion through workforce reductions, grant cancellations, contract cancellations and more. It also claims it has saved $1,086 per taxpayer. DOGE's claims of savings have been rife with inconsistencies and errors, according to multiple reports, suggesting the true savings figures are lower than what the agency has reported. For example, DOGE once claimed it saved $8 billion by cancelling an immigration contract that actually had a value of $8 million. A BBC analysis from April found that only about half of the itemized savings published by DOGE were linked to receipts or other forms of evidence. DOGE lists some receipts as being 'unavailable for legal reasons.' Prior to Trump's election and his time in government, Musk pledged to erase $2 trillion from federal spending—a vow that has since been reduced to $1 trillion. Many of the DOGE-directed cuts have been contested, with federal layoffs in particular seeing challenges in court. Some 216,000 federal employees were laid off in March, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Agencies hit or expected to be targeted by the layoffs include the Department of Human Services, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Education and several others. The firings have been contested in court, going as far as the Supreme Court last month, when the high court blocked a judge's order requiring employees at six federal agencies to be rehired.
