Sarawak electoral boundaries under EC jurisdiction, not state government
He clarified that neither Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), the state government, nor the State Legislative Assembly has any influence over the process.
'GPS, this august House or the state government of the day, has no say whatsoever on the redelineation of the new 17 seats, as it is entirely the prerogative of the EC,' Abdul Karim stated during the debate on the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025.
His comments came in response to opposition concerns after the bill was passed, increasing the number of elected representatives from 82 to 99.
Abdul Karim emphasised the EC's independence, noting its members are appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after consulting the Conference of Rulers.
'Accusing the state government or this House of gerrymandering undermines those appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. It is the EC that will conduct this exercise,' he added.
Following the session, Abdul Karim confirmed the Sarawak government will formally notify the EC of the bill's passage but did not specify a timeline for the redelineation.
'That part is for the EC to do. I'm not aware of any set timeframe. Our role is to notify them that the State Legislative Assembly has passed the bill and now it is up to them to proceed,' he said. – Bernama

MIRI (July 13): Sarawak will maintain its current youth age limit of 40, despite the federal government's decision to lower the national youth age cap to 30, which is set to take effect in January next year. Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Sarawak retains the autonomy to determine its own age threshold for youth at the state level. 'We are not bound by what has been decided at the federal level. For now, Sarawak's definition of youth remains between the ages of 15 and 40. 'We do not want to reduce the age limit abruptly as it would have many implications,' he told reporters when met after officiating at the BELIA GoBiz@Limbang 2025 programme held at Dewan Suarah in Limbang yesterday. Abdul Karim said various ministries, including the Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Ministry and other sectors, have programmes in place to support youth development, many of which would be affected if the age limit were lowered too suddenly. He added that setting the age limit strictly at 30 would be problematic as many individuals at that age are just completing their studies. 'If we bring the cut-off below 40, they would no longer be eligible for various forms of funding and assistance. That is why we are keeping the current policy in place for Sarawak,' he added. Abdul Karim, who is Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) president, also touched on the important role played by the state's largest youth-based non-governmental organisation in driving youth development across various fields. He said that Saberkas is unique in that 30 per cent of its leadership comprises individuals aged over 40, while the remaining 70 per cent must be aged 40 and below. 'This composition ensures that the wisdom and experience of senior members are passed on to guide the younger generation,' he added. Previously, federal Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that the federal government would implement a new youth age cap of 30 effective Jan 1 next year, under the Youth Societies and Youth Development (Amendment) Act 2019. The current national youth age limit remains at 40 until the new policy comes into force. Senator Abun Sui calls for new state seat between Telang Usan and Belaga
Senator Abun Sui Anyit KUCHING (July 13): Senator Abun Sui Anyit hopes one of the 17 new state seats for Sarawak will be located between Telang Usan and Belaga districts. The PKR Hulu Rajang division head said this area – home to Orang Ulu communities like the Kenyah, Kayan, Penan, Punan, and Sekapan – is vast and among the most remote and logistically challenging in Sarawak. He explained these groups reside deep in mountainous terrain, far from administrative hubs, and are in dire need of stronger political representation to ensure their voices are heard in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) and in broader government decision-making. 'If geographical factor is indeed the basis to increase state seats in Sarawak, then it is imperative that one of the new seats is established in Belaga and Telang Usan. 'Belaga district alone covers over 19,400 square kilometres (km) – larger than the combined states of Perlis (821 square km) and Melaka (1,664 square km). 'Yet, this vast district has only one DUN (state) seat (Belaga) and a small portion is in the Murum seat, which makes it extremely difficult for elected representatives to effectively serve the widely scattered rural communities there,' he said in a statement today. He was responding to news reports quoting Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof as saying the increase of state seats from 82 to 99 in Sarawak was in line with the state's geography. On July 7, the State Legislative Assembly passed the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill, 2025 to add 17 new seats. According to Abun Sui, the Election Commission (EC) and the Sarawak government must ensure that this increase in seats is not merely symbolic or political, but truly guarantees inclusivity and justice for all ethnicities and regions, including rural areas which have been underrepresented. 'The people of Belaga district who have sacrificed a lot for the two mega hydroelectric projects — Bakun Dam and Murum Dam — have long hoped for Belaga to be upgraded to the 13th division of Sarawak. Sabah CM: No state polls yet as GRS leaders must first decide on assembly dissolution
PENAMPANG, July 13 — The decision to advise the Yang Dipertua Negeri Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, to dissolve the State Legislative Assembly will only be made after a consensus is reached among Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties, said its chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, said that while he holds the prerogative to advise Tun Musa on the matter, he prefers for the decision to be made collectively, in line with GRS' commitment to joint decision-making. 'We are in GRS, and any decision must go through the Supreme Council. I will discuss and inform the party presidents when the time comes to dissolve the assembly,' he told reporters after closing the Parti Bersatu Sabah-Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (PBS-STAR) Convention here yesterday. However, he did not indicate when the discussion with the Supreme Council would be held. When asked whether he would allow the assembly to dissolve automatically this November, Hajiji said the matter would be considered carefully. On July 6, Bernama reported that the 16th Sabah State Assembly would automatically dissolve on Nov 11 if not dissolved earlier, according to speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya. Commenting on speculation that GRS may contest the 17th Sabah state election independently, Hajiji said the matter would also be discussed at the Supreme Council level. Meanwhile, Hajiji described the PBS-STAR Convention as a historic milestone that strengthens local political cooperation and signals GRS' readiness to face the state election with a strong, united, and credible leadership lineup. He said the close collaboration between the two local parties reflects political maturity, prioritising the interests of the people and the state over political differences.
