Former All-England champ Hafiz relishes smashing debut as Saudi's coach
Hafiz described the opportunity as a fresh challenge, as he has been entrusted with developing a relatively new team still finding their footing in the sport.
After his two-year stint with the Suchitra Badminton Academy in Hyderabad ended in May, Hafiz revealed that he had received several coaching offers, including from clubs in India keen to secure his services.
He was also previously linked with the vacant post of Malaysia's women's singles coach, but ultimately decided to accept the offer from the Saudi Badminton Federation.
Badminton is still a developing sport in the Middle Eastern nation, with the national team only formed in 2014.
In fact, Saudi Arabia only made their debut at the Asian Men's Team Championship last year when the tournament was held in Setia Alam, Selangor.
"I was supposed to begin on Aug 1, but due to visa issues, I'll be starting a little later. I'm flying there this Wednesday," said Hafiz when contacted.
"Initially, the association wanted my services until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, but since the contract is offered through the government, it will be renewed on a yearly basis.
"They've asked me to prepare a comprehensive plan to help raise the level of badminton in Saudi Arabia. It will take time to produce results, and they are realistic about that.
"But the truth is, they do have talented players who need to be nurtured. They're only just beginning to build their elite programme, so it wouldn't be fair to compare them with countries like Malaysia that have had structured systems for decades."
Given Hafiz's credentials, the Saudi Badminton Federation are hoping he can groom players to qualify for the Olympics for the first time at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
But before turning his sights on Los Angeles, Hafiz will first focus on grooming promising players to qualify for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya next September.
"Apart from identifying potential tournaments, my immediate task is to work on improving the players' rankings so they can earn the chance to compete in higher-level competitions," he said.
"It's no small challenge, but I welcome it. Any improvement we achieve will be something to be proud of, especially since Saudi Arabia are still a minority in the badminton scene.
'We need to train not just their physical abilities but also their mental strength – and I have to build everything from scratch," added Hafiz.

Carter said he was out for breakfast with his partner and some of his teammates from provincial side Bay of Plenty when Robertson called to confirm his selection on Monday. "I got an unknown-number call. I guess I thought if there was a day to answer those it was probably (that day) and he just said congratulations," said Carter. LONDON, Aug 7 — Alexander Isak's future at Newcastle hangs in the balance after the Swedish striker was reportedly told to train apart from the rest of the squad on Wednesday. The 25-year-old has been linked with a British transfer record move to Liverpool after failing to feature in Newcastle's pre-season preparations. Isak missed the Magpies' trip to Singapore and South Korea, citing a minor thigh injury, and instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad. He has since returned to Tyneside but Sky Sports reported that Isak was instructed to train after the rest of the squad had departed on Wednesday. 'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United,' Howe told reporters earlier in pre-season. 'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. Pearly-Thinaah return to historic venue for world conquest
KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah will return to a familiar battleground this month when they compete in the World Championships in Paris. The world No. 2 Malaysians will play at the Adidas Arena — formerly known as Arena Porte De La Chapelle — the same venue where they made Olympic history last year. Pearly-Thinaah reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first Malaysian pair to do so. Although they missed out on a bronze medal after losing to Japan's Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida, former national high performance director Datuk James Selvaraj believes the experience gained there will greatly help Pearly-Thinaah when the French capital hosts the world meet. Pearly-Thinaah are on the right track for the Paris showpiece, reaching four World Tour events finals this year and winning the Thailand Open in May. "Playing at the venue where you made history can have a positive impact," said James. "They know what the place is like. It was there they reached the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics. "Now, they should try to enter the final. Whether they win or not, I don't mind, but at least they must try." James hopes to see great on-court communication and chemistry between the duo, urging Pearly-Thinaah to stay mentally strong. "They must learn to be confident. They must motivate themselves to play better. Only then can they advance to the final," he said. Pearly-Thinaah's previous best result at the World Championships was a quarter-final finish in 2023. Meanwhile former Olympic medallist Datuk Razif Sidek said Malaysia's best chance of winning a medal at the world meet will be in the doubles. If the draw is favourable, they must take advantage of it." Both James and Razif feel that the doubles players will have to carry Malaysia's challenge for medals in Paris due to uncertainty in the singles department, with the only real hope for a deep run being Lee Zii Jia. However, the independent shuttler has not played competitively since March due to an ankle injury.
